    Abstract
This study aims to develop the Consistent Fish-Bone (CFB) simplified model for efficient estimation of Engineering Demand Parameters (EDPs) in irregular steel Moment Resisting Frames (steel-MRFs). To achieve this goal, some modifications based on the energy consistent approach have been applied to the Improved Fish-Bone (IFB) simplified model previously presented for reinforced concrete MRFs. These modifications include: 1) adding truss elements to the IFB model to consider the effect of flexural deformations and determining their areas by balancing the overturning moment and the strain energy due to the axial deformation of columns in the original steel-MRF with the overturning moment and...

    , Article Archives of Civil and Mechanical Engineering ; Volume 22, Issue 4 , 2022 ; 16449665 (ISSN) Bakhtiari Doost, R ; Sadraie, H ; Khaloo, A ; Badarloo, B ; Sharif University of Technology
Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH  2022
    Abstract
This paper compares the results of a nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) of an internal hybrid steel beam to RC column connections with those of the experiment on a half-scale. This study used extended face bearing plates (EFBP) embedded in the panel zone (PZ) to make prefabricated RC column to steel beam connections (PRCS). Steel beam flanges were made to be stronger than scaled sections to transfer more force to the PZ. Nonlinear FEA was performed with ABAQUS software to evaluate the connections under unidirectional loading. Failure mode, connection stiffness, and PZ shear strength determined by nonlinear FEA matched well with the experimental findings. PRCS1 model was used to evaluate...

    Abstract
In this study, a nonlinear observer for high-speed estimation of the sample surface topography in a small duration of the probe transient motion utilizing a 2DOF model of TR-AFM is proposed. Since the time duration to reach the steady-state periodic motion of the oscillating probe in conventional imaging methods is relatively high, the proposed nonlinear observer in this research is able to address this limitation and estimate the surface topography throughout transient oscillation of the microcantilever. With this aim, topography estimation process utilizing a Thau observer without any linearization of the system dynamics is designed and coupled with the system dynamics to achieve sample...

    , Article Journal of Constructional Steel Research ; Volume 195 , 2022 ; 0143974X (ISSN) Vaezzadeh, A ; Dolatshahi, K. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
This study investigates the collapse resistance of the cable net structures. Compared to conventional structures, the analysis of the cable net structures is rather complicated due to the highly nonlinear behavior of the cables, which leads to large displacements and instabilities during the analysis. In this paper, 24 prototype structures are modeled with various force density levels, span lengths, and the number of spans. Several collapse scenarios, including the cable rupture, column removal, and restrain failure, are defined, and the prototype structures are analyzed considering 168 collapse scenarios. This paper aims to recognize the critical elements, the weak points, and other...

A compatible mixed finite element method for large deformation analysis of two-dimensional compressible solids in spatial configuration

    , Article International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering ; Volume 123, Issue 15 , 2022 , Pages 3530-3566 ; 00295981 (ISSN) Jahanshahi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2022
    Abstract
In this article, a new mixed finite element formulation is presented for the analysis of two-dimensional compressible solids in finite strain regime. A three-field Hu–Washizu functional, with displacement, displacement gradient and stress tensor considered as independent fields, is utilized to develop the formulation in spatial configuration. Certain constraints are imposed on displacement gradient and stress tensor so that they satisfy the required continuity conditions across the boundary of elements. From theoretical standpoint, simplex elements are best suited for the application of continuity constraints. The techniques that are proposed to implement the constraints facilitate their...

A few significant ones among the reported solutions are pictured to perceive the physical utility and peculiarity of the considered model using...

Effect of mechanical nonlinearity on the electromagnetic response of a microwave tunable metamaterial

    , Article Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics ; Volume 55, Issue 20 , 2022 ; 00223727 (ISSN) Karimi Mahabadi, R ; Goudarzi, T ; Fleury, R ; Orazbayev, B ; Naghdabadi, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Tunable metamaterials functionalities change in response to external stimuli. Mechanical deformation is known to be an efficient approach to tune the electromagnetic response of a deformable metamaterial. However, in the case of large mechanical deformations, which are usually required to fully exploit the potential of the tunable metamaterials, the linear elastic mechanical analysis is no longer suitable. Nevertheless, nonlinear mechanical analysis is missing in the studies of mechanically tunable metamaterials. In this paper, we study the importance of considering nonlinearity in mechanical behavior when analyzing the response of a deformable metamaterial and its effects on electromagnetic...

    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
The current design procedure known as Force-Based Design (FBD) method, generally, does not lead to uniform distribution of drift, hysteretic energy, and ductility demands (or structural damage) along the height of the moment frames under strong earthquakes and these performance parameters can be much higher and concentrate damage on one or more of the lower structural stories. This paper presents an iterative wave propagation (WP) based technique to calculate the seismic nonlinear response of multistory buildings as an extension of the layered soil media, founded on bedrock and subjected to vertically propagating shear waves, which leads to the introduction of a new Lateral Load Pattern...

    Abstract
This paper deals with the nonlinear free vibration analysis of in-plane bi-directional functionally graded (IBFG) rectangular plate with porosities which are resting on Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundations. The material properties of the IBFG plate are assumed to be graded along the length and width of the plate according to the power-law distribution, as well as, even and uneven types are taken into account for porosity distributions. Equations of motion are developed by means of Hamilton's principle and von Karman nonlinearity strain-displacement relations based on classical plate theory (CPT). Afterward, the time-dependent nonlinear equations are derived by applying the Galerkin...

    Elsevier Ltd  2021
    Abstract
In the present study, a novel theoretical model is developed, based on the energy method, to predict the equivalent mechanical properties of a new morphing structure with zero Poisson's ratio, which is composed of continuous fiber reinforced composite struts. Due to the employing glass fiber in fabricating the proposed cruciform honeycomb, higher strength than the structures made of pure isotropic materials is obtained. The use of cells with a zero Poisson's ratio also increases the flexural strength of the structure. In the continuation of the paper, by examining the geometric effects on the equivalent properties, a parametric study is performed. Then, using the appropriate failure...

Stability analysis for design improvement of bio-inspired flapping wings by energy method

    Elsevier Masson s.r.l  2021
    Abstract
This study attempts to reach a broad understanding of the stability properties of nonlinear time-periodic flapping wing structures. Two bio-system models, Hummingbird (6DOF) and Hawkmoth (3DOF) are developed for this purpose. Initial analysis on the Hummingbird model, which is based on the Floquet theory, kinetic energy integration, and phase portrait technique, indicates lack of stability in hover flight. Kinetic energy integration is carried out on the extended model of the Hawkmoth to find the domain of attraction and increase the level of stability by varying the design parameters. Here, the hinge location of the wing, flapping amplitude, flapping frequency, and mean angle of attack are...

    Abstract
Unlike a single-body approach, modeling based on a two-body approach has been employed to prepare the required system dynamic model as a time update equation in the applied filtering technology and measurement data for the estimation process. This more precise mathematical model enabled better understanding about the dynamics of the change in the aircraft mass properties during the airdropping operation. The problem is defined as estimation of the optimal mass properties parameters for the best possible fit of the model output to the real data. The parameter estimation problem is investigated by a nonlinear filtering methodology in two sequential steps. In the first step, the single extended...

    Abstract
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is an imaging tool that is used to analyze the brain’s functions. Brain functional connectivity analysis based on fMRI signals often calculated correlations among time series in different areas of the brain. For FC analysis most prior research works generate the brain graphs based on linear correlations, however, the nonlinear behavior of the brain can lower the accuracy of such graphs. Usually, the Pearson correlation coefficient is used which has limitations in revealing nonlinear relationships. One of the proper methods for nonlinear analysis is the Kernel trick. This method maps the data into a high dimensional space and calculates the linear...

    Abstract
Recently, the elliptic-braced moment resisting frame (ELBRF) which is a new lateral bracing system installed in the middle bay of the frame in the facade of buildings is introduced. This system not only prevents a solution for opening space problem in view of architectural aspects, but also improves the structural behavior. The main drawback of its using in view of numerical modeling in multistory buildings is lack of curved frame element in design and analysis software. To overcome this shortcoming, in this paper, for the first time, an equivalent element for elliptic brace is presented for ELBRF through a laboratory program and nonlinear finite element analysis, which will contribute to...

Multiple model extended continuous ant colony filter applied to real-time wind estimation in a fixed-wing UAV

    , Article Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence ; Volume 92 , 2020 Nobahari, H ; Sharifi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In this study, a new heuristic multiple model filter, called Multiple Model Extended Continuous Ant Colony Filter, is proposed to solve a nonlinear multiple model state estimation problem. In this filter, a bank of extended continuous ant colony filters are run in parallel to solve the multiple model estimation problem. The probability of each model is continually updated and consequently both the true model and the states of the nonlinear system are updated based on the weighted sum of the filters. The new multiple model filter is tested on an engineering problem. The problem is to estimate simultaneously the states of a fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicle as well as the wind model, applied...
