    Abstract
In this study, the effect of cone angle on the flow field and separation efficiency of deoiling hydrocyclones is investigated taking advantage of large eddy simulation. The dynamic Smagorinsky is employed to determine the residual stress tensor of the continuous phase. The method of Lagrangian particle tracking with an optimized search algorithm (closest cell) is applied to evaluate the separation efficiency of deoiling hydrocyclone. Simulations are performed on a 35-mm deoiling hydrocyclone with the three different cone angles of 6, 10 and 20 degree. The numerical results revealed that the changes in the cone angle would affect the velocity and pressure distribution inside hydrocyclone, and...

Crude oil desalter effluent treatment by a hybrid UF/RO membrane separation process

    Abstract
Crude oil desalter effluent from a Tehran oil refinery was treated by a hybrid UF/RO membrane separation process. Ultrafiltration (UF) was used primarily to remove the emulsified oil droplets followed by the removal of total dissolved solids (TDS) via reverse osmosis (RO). The UF membrane was a hydrophilic flat sheet polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane with MWCO of 100 kDa while the RO membrane was a spiral-wound thin-film composite polyamide. Effect of operating conditions such as transmembrane pressure and crossflow velocity were studied in UF pretreatment. The experimental results showed that the UF membrane removed more than 75% of the oil and can be considered as an effective...

    Abstract
In this study, the impacts of salinity, ion type, and aging process were investigated on coalescence and spreading of crude oil interfaces (including an oil droplet and an oil film) under gravity, through drop rest time measurement techniques, aided by an image analysis system. Three different salt solutions of NaCl, Na2SO4, and MgCl2 were studied at different ionic strengths, ranged from 1% to 150% of Persian Gulf seawater ionic strength. According to the results, aging the oil droplet in the brine increased the interfacial rigidity. Addition of a gas phase - by thinning the surface oil film - almost doubled both rest time and spreading time values. In the aged mode, the presence of salt in...

Application of the Maxwell-Stefan theory in modeling gas diffusion experiments into isolated oil droplets by water

    Abstract
We have used the Maxwell-Stefan diffusion theory to model the mass transfer between tertiary-injected gas and residual oil blocked by water, in order to predict the time required for the rupture of the water barrier due to oil swelling. We have also designed and conducted a set of visualization micromodel experiments on various pure and multicomponent oil-gas systems to measure the water rupture time in tertiary gas injection processes. The experimental results show that the initial pressure and dimensions of the system, the oil and gas composition, and the gas solubility in water control the oil swelling process. The experimentally measured rupture times are then employed to evaluate the...
