    GHZ states as near-optimal states for reference frame alignment

    Abstract
    Let two coordinate systems, in possession of Alice and Bob, be related to each other by an unknown rotation R∈ SO (3). Alice is to send identical states | ψ⟩ to Bob who will make measurements on the received state and will determine the rotation R. The task of Bob is to estimate these parameters of the rotation R by the best possible measurements. Based on the quantum Fisher information, we show that Greenberger–Horne–Zeilinger (GHZ) states are near optimal states for this task. We show concrete measurements which will allow Bob to determine the rotation R.     Abstract
    We provide a physically motivated definition for the binding energy (or bond dissociation) of a bipartite quantum system. We consider coherently applying an external field to cancel out the interaction between the subsystems, to break their bond and separate them as systems from which no work can be extracted coherently by any cyclic evolution. The minimum difference between the average energies of the initial and final states obtained this way is defined as the binding energy of the system.     This paper addresses the problem of optimal state-feedback design for a class of non-linear systems. The method is applicable to all non-linear systems which can be linearised using the method of state-feedback linearisation. The alternative is to use linear optimisation techniques for the linearised equations, but then there is no guarantee that the original non-linear system behaves optimally. The authors use feedback linearisation technique to linearise the system and then design a state feedback for the feedback-linearised system in such a way that it ensures optimal performance of the original non-linear system.     We investigate the question of optimal input ensembles for memory channels and construct a rather large class of Pauli channels with correlated noise, which can be studied analytically with regard to the entanglement of their optimal input ensembles. In a more detailed study of a subclass of these channels, the complete phase diagram of the two-qubit channel, which shows three distinct phases, is obtained. While increasing the correlation generally changes the optimal state from separable to maximally entangled states, this is done via an intermediate region where both separable and maximally entangled states are optimal.     A computational framework was developed to simulate the bone remodelling process as a structural topology optimisation problem. The mathematical formulation of the Level Set technique was extended and then implemented into a coronal plane model of the proximal femur to simulate the remodelling of internal structure and external geometry of bone into the optimal state. Results indicated that the proposed approach could reasonably mimic the major geometrical and material features of the natural bone.     A globally convergent algorithm for synthesis of sparse optimal state feedback (SOSF) control of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems is proposed. This problem is known to be NP-hard due to its combinatorial nature. A structured H2 norm controller design problem is intrinsically non-convex, even if a fixed structure is known in advance.     This paper presents a unified passive–active fault-tolerant control strategy to compensate the loss of actuators’ effectiveness. The proposed approach is capable of handling the system in pre- and post-fault diagnosis intervals by passive and active approaches, respectively.
