    , Article ASME 2013 Dynamic Systems and Control Conference, DSCC 2013 ; Vol. 1 , 2013 ; ISBN: 9780791856123 Salehi, R ; Shahbakhti M ; Alasty, A ; Vossoughi, G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Detection and isolation of faults in the exhaust gas path of a turbocharged spark ignition (SI) engine is an essential part of the engine control unit (ECU) strategies to minimize exhaust emission and ensure safe operation of a turbocharger. This paper proposes a novel physics-based strategy to detect and isolate an exhaust manifold leakage and a closed-stuck wastegate fault. The strategy is based on a globally optimal parameter estimation algorithm which detects an effective hole area in the exhaust manifold. The estimation algorithm requires prediction of the exhaust manifold's input and output flows. The input flow is predicted by a nonlinear Luenberger observer which is analytically...

    Abstract
In the present study, the dissimilar aluminum alloys of 5083-H12 and 6061-T6 were joined by friction stir welding (FSW). Then, the design of experiments (DOE), the Box-Benken method, and the response surface methodology (RSM) were used to optimize the effective parameters of the FSW process. The optimized parameters that led to the maximum tensile strength in dissimilar friction stir welded sheets were determined. The predicted results were then compared with those measured experimentally. The results show that there is good agreement between the predicted and measured amounts. By applying the limit dome height (LDH) test, the formability of friction stir welded sheets was studied. During...

    , Article Chemical Engineering Science ; Volume 92 , 2013 , Pages 157-166 ; 00092509 (ISSN) Nejad Ebrahimi, A ; Jamshidi, S ; Iglauer, S ; Boozarjomehry, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A genetic-based pore network extraction method from micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) images is proposed in this paper. Several variables such as the number, radius and location of pores, the coordination number, as well as the radius and length of the throats are used herein as the optimization parameters. Two approaches to generate the pore network structure are presented. Unlike previous algorithms, the presented approaches are directly based on minimizing the error between the extracted network and the real porous medium. This leads to the generation of more accurate results while reducing required computational memories. Two different objective functions are used in building the...

Assessment of asphaltene deposition due to titration technique

    , Article Fluid Phase Equilibria ; Volume 339 , 2013 , Pages 72-80 ; 03783812 (ISSN) Chamkalani, A ; Amani, M ; Kiani, M. A ; Chamkalani, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Due to problems followed by asphaltene deposition, which cause many remedial processes and costs, it seemed necessary to develop equations for determining asphaltene precipitation quantitatively or qualitatively. In this study a new scaling equation as a function of temperature, molecular weight, and dilution ratio (solvent) has been developed. This equation can be used to determine the weight percent of precipitated asphaltene in the presence of different precipitants (solvents). The proposed methodology utilizes least square support vector machines/regression (LSSVM/LSSVR) to perform nonlinear modeling. This paper proposes a new feature selection mechanism based on coupled simulated...

    Abstract
Clustering has become an increasingly important and highly complicated research area for targeting useful and relevant information in modern application domains such as the World Wide Web. Recent studies have shown that the most commonly used partitioning-based clustering algorithm, the K-means algorithm, is more suitable for large datasets. However, the K-means algorithm may generate a local optimal clustering. In this paper, we present novel document clustering algorithms based on the Harmony Search (HS) optimization method. By modeling clustering as an optimization problem, we first propose a pure HS based clustering algorithm that finds near-optimal clusters within a reasonable time....

The input history of the LQR was used as a reference to obtain an optimal space for sliding mode controller parameters. Afterwards, the optimal space boundaries were dedicated to Genetic Algorithm (GA) to search for the optimal parameter for the nonlinear model. Also, the center of the obtained optimal space was used as an initial guess to the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) Algorithm. The proposed algorithm was implemented to regulate SM controller for the attitude...

    Abstract
This paper deals with a two-echelon inventory system for a non-repairable item where the system consists of one warehouse and m identical retailers and uses continuous-review (R, Q) ordering policy. The mathematical model of the problem at hand is shown to be nonlinear integer-programming and hence a parameter-tuned genetic algorithm is proposed to solve it efficiently. A numerical example is provided at the end to illustrate the...

On optimal replacement-repair policy for multi-state deteriorating products under renewing free replacement warranty

    , Article Computers and Mathematics with Applications ; Volume 61, Issue 4 , February , 2011 , Pages 840-850 ; 08981221 (ISSN) Vahdani, H ; Chukova, S ; Mahlooji, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this paper a replacement-repair model is developed to study a renewing free replacement warranty (RFRW) for a class of multi-state deteriorating repairable products. After a replacement, the product warranty is renewed. Two parameters affect the manufacturer's decision to minimally repair or replace a failed item: the product deterioration level at the time of failure and the remaining warranty time. We derive an optimal replacement-repair policy to minimise the expected warranty servicing cost per item sold. In the case of a product with two different working states, we are able to explicitly find the optimal values of the replacement-repair parameters using the Adomian decomposition...

These parameters consist of heat exchanger effectiveness, heat transfer cross section area, heat transfer coefficient, efficiency of pump and...

New solutions of LR fuzzy linear systems using ranking functions and ABS algorithms

    , Article Applied Mathematical Modelling ; Volume 34, Issue 11 , November , 2010 , Pages 3363-3375 ; 0307904X (ISSN) Ghanbari, R ; Mahdavi Amiri, N ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
We propose an approach for computing the general compromised solution of an LR fuzzy linear system by use of a ranking function when the coefficient matrix is a crisp m×n matrix. The solution is so that mean values of a compromised solution satisfies the corresponding crisp linear system. We show that if the corresponding crisp system is incompatible, then the fuzzy linear system lacks any solution. Otherwise, we solve a constrained least squares problem to compute a compromised solution. If the optimal value of the constrained least squares problem is zero, then we obtain the LR solution, namely the exact solution, of the system with respect to a ranking function. On the other hand, if the...

In value based design method, the design sections of structural elements are assumed as optimization...

Bi-objective optimization of a three-echelon multi-server supply-chain problem in congested systems: Modeling and solution

    , Article Computers and Industrial Engineering ; Volume 99 , 2016 , Pages 41-62 ; 03608352 (ISSN) Maghsoudlou, H ; Rashidi Kahag, M ; Akhavan Niakib. S. T ; Pourvaziri, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2016
    Abstract
A novel bi-objective three-echelon supply chain problem is formulated in this paper in which cross-dock facilities to transport the products are modeled as an M/M/m queuing system. The proposed model is validated using the epsilon constraint method when applied to solve some small-size problems. Since the problem belongs to the class of NP-hard and that it is of a bi-objective type, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm with a new solution structure that satisfies all of the constraints is developed to find Pareto solutions. As there is no benchmark available in literature, three other multi-objective meta-heuristic algorithms called non-dominated ranking genetic...

A stochastic well-test analysis on transient pressure data using iterative ensemble Kalman filter

    , Article Neural Computing and Applications ; 2017 , Pages 1-17 ; 09410643 (ISSN) Bazargan, H ; Adibifard, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Accurate estimation of the reservoir parameters is crucial to predict the future reservoir behavior. Well testing is a dynamic method used to estimate the petro-physical reservoir parameters through imposing a rate disturbance at the wellhead and recording the pressure data in the wellbore. However, an accurate estimation of the reservoir parameters from well-test data is vulnerable to the noise at the recorded data, the non-uniqueness of the obtained match, and the accuracy of the optimization algorithm. Different stochastic optimization methods have been applied to this address problem in the literature. In this study, we apply the recently developed iterative ensemble Kalman filter in the...
