    Abstract
In this research, the effect of alternative fuels and the inlet charged air temperature is numerically investigated on the performance of a turbocharged spark-ignition engine. For this purpose, a one-dimensional engine and turbocharger model is created in an engine simulation and performance analysis software and validated with former experimental results. Then, the model is run with four fuel types, including two gasoline types with different octane numbers and two ethanol–gasoline blend fuels—E25 and E85. In each case, the inlet charged air temperature is changed from cold to hot condition and performance characteristics such as the spark advance timing, brake torque, brake-specific fuel...

    Abstract
Feasibility of an innovative buzz detection technique through measuring the static pressure outside a mixed-compression supersonic inlet is studied. The buzz is an instability phenomenon that occurs almost in all supersonic inlets. During the buzz, shock oscillation along with pressure and mass flow fluctuations affects the performance characteristics of the inlet. The main objective of this paper is to introduce a simple and easy-to-implement method for investigation of the buzz phenomenon in a supersonic inlet. The experimental data for far field-based are compared with those of the model-based one at free stream Mach numbers of 1.8, 2.0, and 2.2 and at zero degrees angle of attack for a...

    Abstract
Switched Reluctance Motors (SRMs) possess both simple structure and high speed operation, but they suffer from considerable vibration and acoustic noise. The significant vibration and acoustic noise reduction techniques are categorized in two groups: Drive based methods and geometrical design based group. The main challenge in both groups is reducing the acoustic noise and vibration without significant deterioration in other performance characteristics of the motor such as average torque and efficiency. In this paper a novel multi-stage SRM with skewed poles is proposed to significantly reduce vibration and acoustic noise in almost constant average torque and even higher efficiency. Design...

    Abstract
System Identification is a key technology for the development and integration of modern engineering systems including unconventional flying vehicles. These systems are highly parametric with complex dynamics and nonlinearities. Ducted fans are special class of these vehicles that can take off vertically, hover and cruise at very low speed. In this paper, an exact equivalent linear system is found from the non-linear dynamic model of a ducted fan by use of frequency response identification. Here, power spectral density analysis is performed, using CIFER software, to evaluate the input-output responses in hover and to derive the transfer functions based on the coherence criterion. Then,...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion ; Volume 28, Issue 3 , May , 2013 , Pages 543-552 ; 08858969 (ISSN) Nasiri Gheidari, Z ; Lesani, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
-In this paper, a new optimized structure for two-speed, capacitor-run, single-phase axial flux induction motor (AFIM) for direct-drive operation is presented. Although, there are many advantages for direct-drive systems, their axial forces between the stator and rotor increases with reduction in air-gap length and is of serious concern. An increase in the air-gap length will result in the deterioration of performance characteristics of the motor. In this paper, a new construction technique is proposed to fabricate an AFIM with adjustable air-gap length. After presenting a comprehensive design algorithm, all geometrical dimensions and electrical equivalent circuit parameters are analytically...

    , Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part G: Journal of Aerospace Engineering ; Volume 227, Issue 1 , 2013 , Pages 159-174 ; 09544100 (ISSN) Soltani, M. R ; Farahani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The performance characteristics of an axisymmetric inlet at its design and off-design operational conditions are experimentally investigated. The model is tested for wide ranges of free stream Mach numbers, M∞ = 1.5-2.5, and mass flow rates. For each test, the pressure recovery, the mass flow passing through the inlet and the pressure distribution over the spike and the cowl are measured. In addition, the shock wave formed in front of the inlet is visualized. The characteristic curve of the inlet is then obtained for each free stream Mach number. As the Mach number is increased, the pressure recovery is reduced, but the maximum value of the mass flow rate grows up. Variations of the mass...

Performance and exhaust emission characteristics of a spark ignition engine operated with gasoline and CNG blend

    , Article Proceedings of the Spring Technical Conference of the ASME Internal Combustion Engine Division ; 2012 , Pages 179-187 ; 15296598 (ISSN) ; 9780791844663 (ISBN) Dashti, M ; Hamidi, A. A ; Mozafari, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Using CNG as an additive for gasoline is a proper choice due to higher octane number of CNG enriched gasoline with respect to that of gasoline. As a result, it is possible to use gasoline with lower octane number in the engine. This would also mean the increase of compression ratio in SI engines resulting in higher performance and lower gasoline consumption. Over the years, the use of simulation codes to model the thermodynamic cycle of an internal combustion engine have developed tools for more efficient engine designs and fuel combustion. In this study, a thermodynamic cycle simulation of a conventional four-stroke spark-ignition engine has been developed. The model is used to study the...

    Abstract
The flow field in axial turbines is complex and threedimensional. Therefore, experimental flow field is essential to determine the performance characteristics. However, such testing is always expensive and complex. Simulation of gas turbines is a simple way to reduce testing costs and complexity. The main objective of this paper is to make a detailed systematic analysis of two-stage, axial flow turbine by using of different loss models and a new suggested algorithm based on one-dimensional simulation. In one-dimensional modeling, the loss models have to be used to determine the entropy increase across each section of axial turbines stage at both the design and off-design conditions. The...

    Abstract
In this study, a thermodynamic cycle simulation of a conventional four-stroke SI engine has been carried out to predict the engine performance and emissions. The first law of thermodynamics has been applied to determine in-cylinder temperature and pressure as a function of crank angle. The Newton-Raphson method was used for the numerical solution of the equations. The non-differential form of equations resulted in the simplicity and ease of the solution to predict the engine performance. Two-zone model for the combustion process simulation has been used and the mass burning rate was predicted by simulating spherical propagation of the flame front. Also, temperature dependence of specific...

    Abstract
A series of low speed wind tunnel tests were conducted on a section of a 660 kW wind turbine blade to examine the effects of distributed surface contamination on its performance characteristics. The selected airfoil was tested with a clean surface, two types of zigzag roughness, strip tape roughness and distributed contamination roughness. The straight and zigzag leading edge roughness models simplify the contamination results in an early turbulence transition. In this study, surface contamination was simulated by applying 0.5 mm height roughness over the entire upper surface of the airfoil. The distribution density varied from the leading edge to the trailing edge of the model. Our data...

    Abstract
The performance parameter uncertainties of turbomachines at different rotational speed were determined by experimental and analytical consideration. The instruments/sensors were located and installed according to the standards for evaluating the performance characteristics of turbine and compressor in a turbocharger laboratory in a wide range of rotational speeds. The comparison of turbine and compressor sensitivity shows that the sensitivity of compressor to 1% shift in the pressure is higher than that for the turbine. Results also show that the sensitivities of efficiency and power of turbine reduce as rotational speed increases. The total uncertainty of turbine and compressor are obtained...

    Abstract
With the declining energy resources and increase of pollutant emissions, a great deal of efforts has been focused on the development of alternatives for fossil fuels. One of the promising alternative fuels to gasoline in the internal combustion engine is natural gas [1-5]. The application of natural gas in current internal combustion engines is realistic due to its many benefits. The higher thermal efficiency due to the higher octane value and lower exhaust emissions including CO2 as a result of the lower carbon to hydrogen ratio of the fuel are the two important feature of using CNG as an alternative fuel. It is well known that computer simulation codes are valuable economically as a cost...

    Abstract
Various compositions of maleated ethylene-propylene-rubber (EPR-g-MA) toughened polyamide 6 without and with short glass fiber, i.e. 5-20 wt.% rubber and 5-20 wt.% fiber, are prepared using an industrial twin-screw extruder at different levels of feed rate (100-250 kg/h), screw speed (200-450 rpm) and barrel temperature (230-260 °C). Trial runs designed based on the Taguchi's orthogonal arrays are subjected to tensile, impact, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy tests; and the results are used to perform the analysis of variance (ANOVA). It is shown that the rubber particle size decreases significantly by increasing the rubber content for the unreinforced blend. The...

    Abstract
Axial flow compressor is one of the most important parts of gas turbine units. Therefore, its design and performance prediction are very important. One-dimensional modeling is a simple, fast and accurate method for performance prediction of any type of compressors with different geometries. In this approach, inlet flow conditions and compressor geometry are known and by considering various compressor losses, velocity triangles at rotor, and stator inlets and outlets are determined, and then compressor performance characteristics are predicted. Numerous models have been developed theoretically and experimentally for estimating various types of compressor losses. In present work, performance...
