, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mohammad Beiki, Shahab (Author) ; Farahani, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Rezayi, Hadi ($item.subfieldsMap.e)
    Abstract
Hybrid engines are one of a variety of chemical propulsion systems that have been given special attention in recent years by various industries such as space and defense. The most important reasons for considering this type of system are its high safety, its affordable price compared with liquid fuel propulsion systems, the possibility of switching on and off and changing thrust. This system has a lot of disadvantages as well. This system cannot meet all the needs of different industries due to the low regression rate and, consequently, the limitation of the operating range, thrusts and special impulse. As a result, increasing the fuel regression rate in these engines can greatly expand...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jahi, Hamed (Author) ; Motamed, Arash (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Chip seal is one of the most economical pavement maintenance practice that extends pavement life. To ensure chip seal good performance several quality control methods have been developed. However, most of these methods are qualitative and only measure the stone loss under a certain number on loading. This research developed a new method for quality control of chip seal, based on the assumption that characteristics of the bond between chips and pavement surface play a key role in chip seal performance. To validate this test method, the authors used a wheel track loading test. The results from this research clearly showed that the characteristics of the bond between chips and pavement surface...

Effect of Geometric Distortion on the Flow Field and Performance of an Axisymmetric Supersonic Inlet

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Akbarzadeh, Hossein (Author) ; Farahani, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Inlets must decelerate the air with lowest loss and drag together with a given pressure and Mach number with best quality and uniformity to the engine. This is done based on flight Mach number, by an arrangement of shock waves and surfaces gradient in the inlet. Any distortion in the flow field and the inlet geometry parameters may disrupt such arrangement and influence on the inlet performance, in addition, under critical conditions, it might affect the stability of the intakes. , Article 27th Congress of the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences 2010, ICAS 2010, 19 September 2010 through 24 September 2010, Nice ; Volume 3 , 2010 , Pages 1836-1843 ; 9781617820496 (ISBN) Tehrani, M ; Abedian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In aerospace applications structures weight is considered as a major performance parameter. One of the most effective manufacturing methods for weight reduction is superplastic forming. By this technique, not only the weight, but also the stress concentration, the cost, and the manufacturing time are noticeably reduced. Additionally, the components with complicated shapes could be formed in a single manufacturing step. Due to the wide demand for whiskers reinforced metal matrix composites (MMCs) in aerospace industries, many research works have been designed to extend the borders of superplastic forming to MMCs materials. In the present study, a 3-D symmetric micromechanical finite element...

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 18, Issue 3 B , 2011 , Pages 375-382 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Soltani, M. R ; Farahani, M ; Sepahi Younsi, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The flow over a supersonic inlet has been investigated experimentally and numerically at a free stream Mach number of 2 and a zero degree angle of attack. Wind tunnel tests were performed to obtain the performance parameters of the inlet and were used as a baseline and validation tools for the numerical code. A heat source was added to the flow field at a distance ahead of the inlet. The effect of heat source addition on the main performance parameters of the inlet is investigated numerically. Results show that the heat source considerably reduces drag coefficient; however, its effect on pressure recovery is not favorable. This unfavorable effect was then minimized by controlling heat source...

    Abstract
Heat source addition to the axisymmetric supersonic inlet may improve the performance parameters, which will increase the inlet efficiency. In this investigation the heat has been added to the flow field at some distance ahead of an axisymmetric inlet by adding an imaginary thermal source upstream of cowl lip. The effect of heat addition on the drag coefficient, mass flow rate and the overall efficiency of the inlet have been investigated. The results show that heat addition causes flow separation, hence to prevent this phenomena, roughness has been added on the spike surface. However, heat addition reduces the drag coefficient and the inlet mass flow rate considerably. Furthermore, the...

    Abstract
A new structure is suggested for simultaneous microwave chirped pulse generation and array antenna beam steering. It is based on using a multi-channel fiber Bragg grating in a photonic microwave delay-line filter. The paper presents a feasibility study of the idea, discussing the main performance parameters of both signal generation and beam steering functions. Specifically, it focuses on the effects of wavelength tuning, resolution and accuracy. The study shows that custom off-the-shelf components could be used to implement an all optical system capable of generating chirped pulses while steering the radiation pattern of a small sized antenna array. The advantages of the structure for...

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a new voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) with a high oscillation frequency yet low power consumption. The oscillator which is a single stage circuit has a low phase noise due to reduced noise sources. To evaluate the performance parameters, the oscillator was simulated in a 0.18-μm standard CMOS process. The results show that the oscillation frequency of VCO may vary between 4.66-5.9 GHz. Also, the phase noise of the VCO at oscillation frequency of 5.6 GHz is -99.7 dBc at 1 MHz offset frequency. Also, the power consumption was 4.8 mW at the same oscillation frequency. © 2007 IEEE

    Abstract
The performance of an HTPB/N2O hybrid motor was experimentally investigated. A hybrid motor was designed and manufactured in a laboratory with the purpose of studying the effects of various parameters on the motor's performance, including fuel regression rate and specific impulse. A series of tests were conducted to find a correlation between the fuel regression rate and the oxidizer's mass flux. The effects of chamber's pressure on the regression rate as well as other performance parameters were investigated. While the burning rate did not change dramatically, both the efficiency and ISP of the motor increased. The local fuel regression rate and the fuel port were also calculated. In...

    Abstract
The demand for robust computation systems has led to the increment of the number of processing cores in current chips. As the number of processing cores increases, current electrical communication means can introduce serious challenges in system performance due to the restrictions in power consumption and communication bandwidth. Contemporary progresses in silicon nano-photonic technology have provided a suitable platform for constructing photonic communication links as an alternative for overcoming such problems. Topology is one of the most significant characteristics of photonic interconnection networks. In this paper, we have introduced a novel topology, aiming to reduce insertion loss in...

    Abstract
Numerous studies have investigated driving equations used to predict the slip factor in centrifugal compressors so far. Inevitably, through these studies, the ow field characteristics have been simplified and the effects of the related parameters have been neglected. The present study, experimentally and numerically, investigates the slip phenomenon in a specific centrifugal compressor with complex blade curves and splitter blades, considering the main effective parameters such as the number of blades, exit angle, etc. To this end, a three-dimensional simulation of the viscous flow field of the compressor via an appropriate turbulence method was performed. In addition, an experimental study...

    Abstract
This paper presents a kinetic data structure (KDS) for maintenance of the Euclidean minimum spanning tree (EMST) on a set of moving points in 2-dimensional space. For a set of n points moving in the plane we build a KDS of size O(n) in O(nlogn) preprocessing time by which the EMST is maintained efficiently during the motion. This is done by applying the required changes to the combinatorial structure of the EMST which is changed in discrete timestamps. We assume that the motion of the points, i.e. x and y coordinates of the points, are defined by algebraic functions of constant maximum degree. In terms of the KDS performance parameters, our KDS is responsive, local, and compact. The...

    Abstract
The quality of an architectural design of a software system has a great influence on achieving nonfunctional requirements to the system. Unified Modeling Language (UML), which is the industry standard as a common object oriented modeling language needs a well-defined semantic base for its notation. Integrating formal methods Petri nets (PNs) with object oriented design concepts UML is useful to benefit from the strengths of both approaches. Formalization of the graphical notation enables automated processing and analysis tasks. In this paper we use a method to converting State Diagram to Generalized Stochastic Petri Net (GSPN) and then we derive the embedded Continues Time Markov Chain from...

    Abstract
Homogeneous charge compression ignition engines require a smart control system to regulate the input quantities of the engine in various operational conditions. Achieving an optimum combustion needs an appropriate system response for different engine loads and speeds according to the power acquired from the engine, as well as the amounts of emissions present in the exhaust. Therefore, performing a set of experimental tests together with numerical simulations in a wide range of conditions facilitates calibration of the input parameters of the engine. In this study, the effects of the thermodynamic parameters and the thermokinetic parameters on the engine output in the preliminary design stage...
