    Muslim scholars and technological volition

    , Article Technology in Society ; Volume 61 , 2020 Ravanbakhsh, R ; Taqavi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
What purpose, according to Muslim scholars, should technological development serve? To answer this question, first we explain the views of seven Muslim scholars who have theorized about technology from an Islamic viewpoint. We then set out Carl Mitcham's fourfold analysis of technology, and summarize the views of philosophers of technology on technological volition. This places us in a position to classify Muslim scholars' opinions on technological development under seven broad headings, namely: meeting human beings' needs, implementation of an Islamic culture and lifestyle, serving human beings, serving nature, understanding the splendor of creation, providing personal and social happiness,...

Cultural conflict in technology transfer to non-industrial communities: A critique of ihde's ideas

    Abstract
Societies today have come closer together as a result of the development of communication technologies and the greater ease with which business is transacted. Consequently, technological tools and devices are being transferred from industrial societies to other countries at dazzling speeds the transfer of technology to non-industrialized societies with their own histories, civilizations, and backgrounds has led to the emergence of cultural issues and conflicts that are specific to the modern period and that had not existed prior to this period. In this article, we have reviewed the ideas of Don Ihde, a leading contemporary philosopher who has done much work in the field of the philosophy of...

The new york times test: An intersubjective reconsideration

    Abstract
Sometimes, in our capacity as professionals, and under certain circumstances, we find ourselves faced with an ethical problem such as a conflict of interest in which codes of ethics or available ethical problem-solving methods cannot help us decide upon the moral course of action to take. Hence, either the codes or methods are flawed, or we are not using them appropriately. A method claimed to be helpful in such situations is The New York Times Test (NYTT). © 1982-2012 IEEE

Design and assessment of seismic resilient structures by the endurance time method

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 23, Issue 4 , 2016 , Pages 1648-1657 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Estekanchi, H. E ; Vafai, A ; Basim, M. Ch ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A framework to calculate a quantitative measure of seismic resilience using the Endurance Time (ET) method is introduced. ET method is a response-history based analysis procedure where structures are subjected to gradually intensifying dynamic excitations and their performance is assessed based on their response at different excitation levels, reducing the required computational effort. First, a prototype hospital building is optimally designed through three distinct design philosophies: prescriptive design code, performance based design criteria, and value based seismic design method. In value based design method, the design sections of structural elements are assumed as optimization...
