    Congestion Control in VANETs

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Zarazvand, Farid (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Vehicular Ad hoc Network (VANET) is a subclass of Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET), which provides us ability to communicate between moving vehicles. VANET has been developed as a standard means of communication for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to improve traffic safety and efficiency while providing internet access on the move. Congestion control is a challenging subject in VANETs primarily due to the shared nature of the wireless channel and frequent changes of the network topology. Inefficient congestion control causes periodical safety messages to be lost and introduces latency in threat modelling at the application layer. There are two methods to overcome this problem. First, based...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Soleimani, Masoumeh (Author) ; Hemmatyar, Ali Mohammad Afshin (Supervisor) ; Bayat, Siavash (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Device to device communication (D2D) in cellular networks is seen as a promising thechnology to assist local communication services. It offers several gains including cellular traffic offloading gain and proximity gain of devices that allows high data rate, low power consumption, low delays and the reuse gain when cellular and D2D links are allowed to utilize same radio resources simultaneously. D2D communication is one of the key enabler for fifth generation (5G) networks. Major bottleneck in the operation of D2D communication is energy. The direct D2D communication can result in energy inefficiency as the battery powered devices are required to perform energy consuming tasks on their own...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Esmaeili Atrabi, Hamed (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The centralized and decentralized control approaches are the most effective control approaches to be applied in micro grids. However, practically to rerduce the cost and improve the reliability, decentralized control is usually employed. Initially, this thesis discusses the components and dynamic model of the micro grid in order to evaluate the stability. Then, it introduces the decentralized control methods which can be used in a micro grid. In the next step, a sample micro gird is studied (with high ratio of lines R/X). This microgrid has three DG plants having DC voltage sources, inverter, and LCL filter. The performance of AVR controls is evaluated by combining the PQ and droop control...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Ghasemi, Mohammad Amin (Author) ; Parniani, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Global growth of electrical energy consumption and various limitations on the use of fossil fuels, such as environmental problems, rising prices and their limited available resources, have resulted in growing interest and investment in the usage of renewable energy generation, especially photovoltaic (PV) systems. Although the off-grid operation of PV systems was its dominant operation form in the past, proliferation of these systems has made the grid-connected operating mode widespread in recent years. However, their grid connection causes technical problems which need to be resolved. This thesis studies and analyses the steady state and dynamic operation of PV systems in grid-connected...

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hojabri Hutaki, Hossein (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The use of wind energy and wind generators as an inexpensive type of renewable energy sources is increasing. Wind farms and distributed wind generators connected to the power transmission and distribution systems and microgrids, and wind generators in standalone mode of operation affect the stability and power quality of the grid. In this thesis, the performance of a matrix converter in grid connection of variable speed PMSG–driven wind turbine is improved. In this way, by transferring the matrix converter modulation matrix into the synchronous reference frame and decomposing it into the singular values, a new general method is proposed for analysis, modelling and modulation of a matrix...

Capacity Analysis and Interference Characterization for CDMA Cellular Wireless Communications Systems Based on Statistical Modelling of User Locations

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Taheri, Mohammad Mahdi (Author) ; Bastani, Mohammad Hassan (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we consider the effect of random locations of users in the capacity analysis of SIR-based power control systems and comparison to the strength-based systems, for the first time. Unlike previous works we do not consider a simple deterministic uniform model for the analysis. We provide simulations and analytical solutions for calculating the interference statistics, based on which, we not only calculate the interference statistics, but also study the effect of locating a user in every location in the network coverage area and its share in the interference. We also calculate each cell’s share in every statistics of the interference. In this thesis, based on the common assumption...

    Abstract
In this paper the direct power control methods of doubly fed induction generator in wind turbine applications are studied. In the methods under study, the proper voltage space vector of the rotor side converter is selected using a switching table which is derived from flux position and the difference between the measured and reference stator active and reactive powers. Various simulations are performed in Matlab/Simulink software on a DFIG system in order to investigate the dynamic performance and robustness of the proposed control methods against machine internal parameters variations

    , Article Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering ; Volume 36, Issue 1 , 2013 , Pages 18-25 ; 08408688 (ISSN) Hamzeh, M ; Mokhtari, H ; Karimi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
This paper presents a decentralized self-adjusting reactive power controller for the autonomous operation of a multi-bus medium voltage (MV) microgrid. The main objective of the proposed control strategy of each distributed generation (DG) unit is to compensate the reactive power of its local loads and to share the reactive power of the nonlocal loads among itself and other DG units. The proposed control strategy includes an improved droop controller whose parameters are adjusted according to the reactive power of the local loads. A virtual inductive impedance loop is augmented to the voltage controller to enhance the steady state and transient responses of the proposed reactive power...

    Abstract
In this paper, the reactive power control of a variable-speed permanent-magnet synchronous wind generator with a matrix converter at the grid side is improved. A generalized modulation technique based on singular value decomposition of the modulation matrix is used to model different modulation techniques and investigate their corresponding input reactive power capability. Based on this modulation technique, a new control method is proposed for the matrix converter which uses active and reactive parts of the generator current to increase the control capability of the grid-side reactive current compared to conventional modulation methods. A new control structure is also proposed which can...

    Abstract
This paper discusses the dynamic behavior of the brushless doubly fed induction generator during the grid faults which lead to a decrease in the generator's terminal voltage. The variation of the fluxes, back EMFs, and currents are analyzed during and after the voltage dip. Furthermore, two alternative approaches are proposed to improve the generator ride-through capability using crowbar and series dynamic resistor circuits. Appropriate values for their resistances are calculated analytically. Finally, the coupled circuit model and the generator's speed and reactive power controllers are simulated to validate the theoretical results and the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. Moreover,...

From traditional to fractional PI control: A key for generalization

    , Article IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine ; Volume 6, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 41-51 ; 19324529 (ISSN) Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    IEEE  2012
    Abstract
Proportional-integral (PI) controllers are the most common form of feedback used in industrial applications today [1][3]. The use of proportional and integral feedback also has a long history of practical applications [4]. For example, in the middle of the 18th century, centrifugal governors as the proportional feedback were applied to regulate the speed of windmills [5]. By the 19th century, it was known that using integral feedback could remove the offsets appearing in working with governors [6]. At present, PI control, still a very basic form of feedback, is also one of the first solutions often considered in the control of industrial systems [7]. On the other hand, in some applications,...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Volume 3, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 1903-1910 ; 19493053 (ISSN) Ghazanfari, A ; Hamzeh, M ; Mokhtari, H ; Karimi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper proposes a hierarchical active power management strategy for a medium voltage (MV) islanded microgrid including a multihybrid power conversion system (MHPCS). To guarantee excellent power management, a modular power conversion system is realized by parallel connection of small MHPCS units. The hybrid system includes fuel cells (FC) as main and supercapacitors (SC) as complementary power sources. The SC energy storage compensates the slow transient response of the FC stack and supports the FC to meet the grid power demand. The proposed control strategy of the MHPCS comprises three control loops; dc-link voltage controller, power management controller, and load current sharing...

A new approach to determine reference current for shunt active power filters: According to IEEE Std.1459 definitions

    , Article 2012 3rd Power Electronics and Drive Systems Technology, PEDSTC 2012, 15 February 2012 through 16 February 2012 ; February , 2012 , Pages 156-159 ; 9781467301114 (ISBN) Ahmadi, M ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Increase of nonlinear loads has led to the rise of harmonic currents, voltage distortion and imbalance in power systems. IEEE Std. 1459 proposes new definitions for electric power in sinusoidal, nonsinusoidal, balanced and unbalanced conditions which can be used for compensation of nonsinusoidal and unbalanced systems. Among different definitions, IEEE Std. 1459 proposes the new concept of effective apparent power and power factor which is more related to the real losses in a power system. In this paper, by expansion of definitions of IEEE Std. 1459, instantaneous forms of effective parameters are defined. Then, a new control strategy for a Shunt Active Power Filters (SAPFs) is defined based...

A new control strategy for a multi-bus MV microgrid under unbalanced conditions

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Volume 27, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 2225-2232 ; 08858950 (ISSN) Hamzeh, M ; Karimi, H ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper proposes a new control strategy for the islanded operation of a multi-bus medium voltage (MV) microgrid. The microgrid consists of several dispatchable electronically-coupled distributed generation (DG) units. Each DG unit supplies a local load which can be unbalanced due to the inclusion of single-phase loads. The proposed control strategy of each DG comprises a proportional resonance (PR) controller with an adjustable resonance frequency, a droop control strategy, and a negative-sequence impedance controller (NSIC). The PR and droop controllers are, respectively, used to regulate the load voltage and share the average power components among the DG units. The NSIC is used to...

Probabilistic determination of pilot points for zonal voltage control

    , Article IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution ; Volume 6, Issue 1 , January , 2012 , Pages 1-10 ; 17518687 (ISSN) Amraee, T ; Soroudi, A ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Owing to the local nature of voltage and reactive power control, the voltage control is managed in a zonal or regional basis. A new comprehensive scheme for optimal selection of pilot points is proposed in this study. The uncertainties of operational and topological disturbances of the power system are included to provide the robustness of the pilot node set. To reduce the huge number of probable states (i.e. combined states of load and topological changes), a scenario reduction technique is used. The resulted optimal control problem is solved using a new immune-based genetic algorithm. The performance of the proposed method is verified over IEEE 118-bus and realistic Iranian 1274-bus...
