    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 26, issue. 3 , 2011 , p. 1734-1743 ; ISSN: 08858977 Dorostkar-Ghamsari, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The deployment of flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) devices, despite miscellaneous benefits and applications, has been restricted mainly due to their large investment costs. Accordingly, the notion of distributed FACTS (D-FACTS) was recently proposed. Distributed static series compensators (DSSCs), as a new member of D-FACTS, are directly clamped to conductors of transmission lines. The possibility of controlling the compensation rate of DSSCs from the control center affords the active control of network power flow. This paper presents a comprehensive reliability model for the DSSC. The model is then reduced and a state-space representation is extracted for a transmission line with a...

    , Article PEDSTC 2014 - 5th Annual International Power Electronics, Drive Systems and Technologies Conference ; Feb , 2014 , pp. 72-77 Hamzeh, M ; Karimi, Y ; Asadi, E ; Oraee, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents an effective current injection method for a single phase grid-connected PV inverter with LCL filter. The main objective of the proposed control strategy is to compensate the resonance effect of the LCL filter. In the proposed control strategy, a resonance compensator is augmented to the conventional proportional resonance (PR) controller to attenuate current oscillations in resonance frequency of LCL filter. The proposed strategy robustly regulates the output current of grid connected inverter in various grid impedances and provides a high quality current injection capability for the PV inverter in harmonic polluted condition of the grid voltage. The performance of the...

    Abstract
Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator has attractive features to be the first choice in next generation of wind generators. However, its efficiency and power-to-weight ratio are slightly lower in comparison to induction machine with the same rating. Considerable part of these imperfections arises from the rotor design, which produces magnetic field with considerable undesirable spatial harmonics. This paper proposes a novel rotor configuration to reduce spatial harmonic distortion of air-gap magnetic field as well as improving some drawbacks of the conventional structure, including unequal magnitudes of rotor bar currents, teeth saturation at low average air gap magnetic fields, high core...

    Abstract
Battery and plug-in hybrid vehicles equipped with bidirectional battery chargers are capable of supplying power to the electric grid according to power system demand. This technology is called 'vehicle to grid' or V2G. A bidirectional on-board charger can be used to improve the charge availability. An on-board charger should have small size and light weight. On the other hand, the charger must minimize power quality impact, draw current at high power factor to maximize power from an outlet. In this paper, a new three-phase integrated bidirectional isolated soft-switched battery charger is proposed which is appropriate for vehicle to grid technology. The charger utilizes a 4-switch...

    Abstract
Fault detection (FD) in power electronic converters is necessary in embedded and safety critical applications to prevent further damage. Fast FD is a mandatory step in order to make a suitable response to a fault in one of the semiconductor devices. The aim of this study is to present a fast yet robust method for fault diagnosis in nonisolated dc-dc converters. FD is based on time and current criteria which observe the slope of the inductor current over the time. It is realized by using a hybrid structure via coordinated operation of two FD subsystems that work in parallel. No additional sensors, which increase system cost and reduce reliability, are required for this detection method. For...

Hybrid modeling of a DC-DC series resonant converter: Direct piecewise affine approach

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I: Regular Papers ; Volume 59, Issue 12 , 2012 , Pages 3112-3120 ; 15498328 (ISSN) Molla Ahmadian, H ; Karimpour, A ; Pariz, N ; Tahami, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    IEEE  2012
    Abstract
A dc-dc resonant converter has the advantage of overcoming switching losses and electromagnetic interference which are the main limitations of high frequency power converters. Nevertheless, the modeling and stability analysis of dc-dc resonant converters are considerably more complex than pulsewidth modulation counterparts. The conventional averaged linearized model of the resonant converter has limitations due to averaging and linearization. First of all, the linearized model has large modeling error in presence of large variations of reference voltage and input voltage. Furthermore, Converging area for stabilizing controllers is smaller in the averaged model. In order to overcome these...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics ; Volume 27, Issue 4 , October , 2012 , Pages 1958-1965 ; 08858993 (ISSN) Marvi, M ; Fotowat Ahmady, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Boost converter operating in critical conduction mode is widely used in low-power power factor corrector because of its simplicity and low switching losses. The switching loss due to parasitic capacitor discharge at the on-time instant can also be reduced by a valley switching technique. In this paper, we introduce a new driver topology for the high-side switch in a synchronous boost converter operating in the critical conduction mode to obtain full zero-voltage switching. Using the proposed high-side driver topology, the conventional control circuit is sufficient to control the low-side switch, and no additional control circuit is required to adjust the timing of the switches. Finally, the...

Optimizing the LLC-LC resonant converter topology for wide-output-voltage and wide-output-load applications

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics ; Volume 26, Issue 11 , 2011 , Pages 3192-3204 ; 08858993 (ISSN) Beiranvand, R ; Zolghadri, M. R ; Rashidian, B ; Alavi, S. M. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
LLC-LC resonant converter is a suitable circuit topology to design switched-mode power supplies for wide-output-voltage and wide-output-load applications. In this paper, a design procedure is introduced to optimize this converter. Unlike soft switching techniques for pulse width modulated converters, which usually apply an active auxiliary circuit to reduce switching losses and EMI, in the proposed converter, not only such circuits are not used, but also all of the parasitic elements are merged to the converters main components. Zero-voltage switching (ZVS) operation is realized for all power devices under all operating conditions. Thus, this converter is a suitable choice for...

    2011
    Abstract
This paper presents a high performance Direct Torque Control (DTC) theme for the induction motor using Indirect Matrix Converter (IMC). To improve the dynamic behavior of motor, Active Learning Method (ALM) is implemented on the DTC. The ALM uses its own modeling technique called the ink drop spread (IDS) method. Functionally the IMC is very similar to the Direct Matrix Converter (DMC) but it has separate line and load bridges. In the inverter stage, the classical DTC method is employed. In the rectifier stage, in order to reduce losses caused by snubber circuit the rectifier four-step commutation method is employed. By suitably selecting switching pattern and using Active Learning Method...

    , Article International Journal of Control ; 2015 ; 00207179 (ISSN) Mahdian Dehkordi, N ; Namvar, M ; Karimi, H ; Piya, P ; Karimi Ghartemani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Distributed generation (DG) units are often interfaced to the main grid using power electronic converters including voltage-source converters (VSCs). A VSC offers dc/ac power conversion, high controllability, and fast dynamic response. Because of nonlinearities, uncertainties, and system parameters’ changes involved in the nature of a grid-connected renewable DG system, conventional linear control methods cannot completely and efficiently address all control objectives. In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive control scheme based on adaptive backstepping strategy is presented to control the operation of a grid-connected renewable DG unit. As compared to the popular vector control technique, the...

    Abstract
In this paper a novel T type scheme for 1-phase direct ac/ac converters is proposed. In this topology, frequency changing takes place directly (without common DC voltage bus) through three converters that are connected in a T structure. Unity power factor and precise output voltage regulation is achieved through appropriate control of these three converters. H-bridge converters are implemented, as the basic unit, in each branches of T to make the proposed converter. The converter is controlled such that the average active power of each H-bridges remains zero. So capacitors are implemented in DC links of H-bridges. In comparison to conventional back-to-back converters, life time of each...

    Abstract
Cascaded H-Bridge converter has recently been utilized in different high-power applications due to its modular and simple structure. In order to have a balanced operation after a fault occurrence in this converter, it is necessary to detect the switch fault and its location. In this paper, a fast power switch fault detection method is presented to identify the fault and its location. Only one voltage measurement per phase is required by this method, and the fault detection is faster compared to the existing methods. Moreover, it is easy for implementation on an FPGA device, due to the use of simple math, relational and state machine blocks. The proposed method is verified by computer...

    Abstract
This paper proposes to use a back-to-back converter as the interlink between a utility grid and a microgrid. To justify this proposal, two modes of operation are explained and the benefits of the back-to-back converter over conventional static switches are shown. In mode-1, the inter-link converter injects prespecified amounts of active and reactive power to the microgrid. This mode is identified as PQ control mode. Mode-2 is the voltage control mode in which, the back to back converter controls the voltage of the microgrid and maintains the power quality of the current drawn from the utility grid in spite of nonlinear and unbalanced loads in the microgrid

    Abstract
A matrix converter is a voltage/current source AC/AC frequency converter. In grid-connected operation of a variable-speed permanent magnet synchronous wind power generator, the matrix converter is normally controlled as a voltage source converter. In this control method, the generator-side voltage is synthesized from the grid-side voltage source. However, in the stand-alone mode of operation, the grid-side stiff voltage source is not available, and the input filter of the matrix converter is unstable. In this article, a new control method is presented that controls a permanent magnet synchronous wind generator in a stand-alone mode with a matrix converter as a current source converter. The...
