A voltage balancing method for series-connected igbts operating as a fault current limiter in high-voltage dc power supplies

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics ; Volume 68, Issue 9 , 2021 , Pages 7895-7907 ; 02780046 (ISSN) Mohsenzade, S ; Zarghani, M ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2021
    Abstract
This article proposes a high-voltage fault current limiter (HVFCL) for high-voltage dc power supplies (HVdcPSs) which limits the current of the power supply automatically in the short-circuit fault (SCF). The proposed HVFCL is based on the series-connected insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). The main achievements of this article are the balanced voltage sharing and a very low value of the short-circuit current near to the load nominal current for the series-connected IGBTs during the SCF. These achievements result in a longer maximum permissible short-circuit time. These achievements are obtained by a control strategy that puts the series-connected IGBTs in a specific operating point...

A voltage balancing scheme for series igbts to increase their expected lifetime in pulsed load applications

    , Article IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics ; Volume 9, Issue 1 , 2021 , Pages 461-471 ; 21686777 (ISSN) Mohsenzade, S ; Zarghani, M ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Clamp mode resistor capacitor diode (CMRCD) snubbers have a simple and easy implementing structure. They have been widely adopted in the pulsed power supplies to provide a safe operating condition for the series insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). The main problem of the CMRCD snubbers is their poor performance in the voltage balancing of the series IGBTs. They are essentially overvoltage protectors and clamp the voltage of the IGBTs in a probable potentially dangerous condition. This issue diminishes the expected lifetime of the series IGBTs, where a number of them face a higher level of the voltage than that of the others. The unbalanced voltage of the series IGBTs will result in a...

An IGBT-Based high-voltage crowbar for minimizing the fault current interruption time and injected fault energy during the vacuum arc fault in microwave tubes

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science ; Volume 49, Issue 6 , 2021 , Pages 1941-1947 ; 00933813 (ISSN) Pouresmaeil, K ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2021
    Abstract
In conventional high-voltage power supplies used for driving the microwave tubes, the shunt crowbar, which generally consists of series-connected thyristors, protects the microwave tube against the vacuum arc fault. In the case of arc fault, the thyristor-based crowbar is closed as a parallel path and diverts the fault current through itself. It avoids serious damage to the microwave tube. However, thyristor switches usually have a limited rate of rise of ON-state current (di/dt), which necessitates placing a series inductor in the crowbar path. Thus, satisfying all protection limits of microwave tubes-including the injected fault energy and the fault current interruption time-is a...

MASTER: Reclamation of hybrid scratchpad memory to maximize energy saving in multi-core edge systems

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Computing ; 2021 ; 23773782 (ISSN) Shekarisaz, M ; Hoseinghorban, A ; Bazzaz, M ; Salehi, M ; Ejlali, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Most modern multi-core edge devices work in outdoor situations with limited power supplies like energy harvester and batteries. Therefore, energy consumption is a fundamental issue in which the memory subsystem has a significant role. Scratchpad memories (SPM) can provide a broad potential for energy saving. Still, due to the insufficient SPM capacity in such edge devices, a rigorous SPM data allocation scheme is necessary to reduce the energy consumption of the memory subsystem. Emerging non-volatile memories (NVMs) are very useful to reduce the energy consumption of the memory subsystem. Therefore, embedded and edge devices can take advantage of hybrid SPM composed of both NVM and SRAM to...

    Abstract
Natural disasters threaten the sustainability of electric power supply. This fact highlights the importance of enhancing technological resourcefulness to handle the upcoming events. Once a natural disaster occurs, the most urgent undertaking is to rapidly pinpoint and assess component damages and dispatch the repair crews towards the most critical impaired elements. Practical efforts confirm that utilising a drone, which is an unmanned aerial vehicle, can notably reduce the duration of post-disaster distribution system damage assessment (DA) and increase the resilience of power systems. This study presents an optimisation model to determine the optimal number and type of drones required for...

A fast vacuum ARC detection method based on the neural network data fusion algorithm for the high-voltage DC power supply of vacuum tubes.رر

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science ; Volume 49, Issue 1 , 2021 , Pages 476-485 ; 00933813 (ISSN) Ayoubi, R ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Vacuum arc is one of the most important failure factors of the vacuum tubes. The amount of delivered energy from the high-voltage dc power supply to the vacuum tube is an important issue during the vacuum arc in the tube. Vacuum arc acts as a short-circuit fault (SCF) at the power supply output. The majority of converters use a single current sensor to measure only the converter output current for detecting the SCF. However, the sensor may provide unreliable data because of the noise effect. Application of a low-pass filter reduces the noise effect. Regarding the delay of the low-pass filter, the interval of arc detection increases and more energy is delivered to the tube. In this article, a...

CHANCE: Capacitor charging management scheme in energy harvesting systems

    Abstract
The energy efficiency of emerging nonvolatile processors equipped with FRAM-SRAM memory makes them a promising solution for energy harvesting systems. To enable correct functionality and forward progress with an unreliable power supply, the system must accumulate sufficient energy in the capacitor to execute tasks atomically, even in the worst case scenario. Due to the large gap between the average and worst case energy consumption of tasks, state-of-the-art approaches like eM-map require a large capacitor to execute tasks on the SRAM. However, the size, cost, and charging time of the capacitor are major concerns in the energy harvesting systems. In this article, we proposed CHANCE, a...

n the calculation of the leakage inductance in transformers with nonideal windings

    Abstract
The transformer leakage inductance (TLI) is an important parameter in the design phase of the isolated power supplies. Hence, the TLI estimation before the transformer construction is very useful for the designers. The previous works considered an ordered winding turn arrangement (WTA) for the transformers. This assumption considers only ideal windings which may result in a significant error from what will be achieved after the construction of the transformer. This article concentrates on the transformers with nonideal windings in which the turns are not ordered. The uneven distribution of the turns in the layers is mainly due to the wrapping machine error. Hence, for a specific transformer...

Low power receiver with merged N-path LNA and mixer for MICS applications

, Article AEU - International Journal of Electronics and Communications ; Volume 117 , 2020 Beigi, A ; Safarian, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier GmbH  2020
    Abstract
In this paper, a low power receiver for medical implant communication service (MICS) is presented. Low power design is vital in the MICS applications since the implanted chip has to work for a long time without the need to change its battery. As a result, a merged N-path low noise amplifier (LNA) and mixer block is proposed. In this structure, the LNA and down-conversion mixer share a transconductance to lower the overall power consumption. An N-path feedback is utilized around the shared transconductance not only to improve the LNA selectivity and relax the linearity requirements but also to downconvert the radio frequency (RF) component and create the intermediate frequency (IF) signal. In...

    Abstract
High voltage power supplies are widely used in telecommunication systems. To better utilize these power supplies, voltage should be stabilized at a certain level. In this application, in case of changing voltage, the desired output parameters will change, such as RF output power quality. Various methods have been proposed to stabilize the voltage at acceptable levels. One of the most commonly used methods is use of switching regulators that are considered for high efficiency in comparison with linear regulators. But the use of these regulators also has problems. One of these problems is electromagnetic interference which is very important in telecommunication systems. Therefore, the need for...

A comprehensive design of the thyristor-based crowbar for vacuum tube high-voltage dc power supplies

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science ; Volume 48, Issue 6 , 2020 , Pages 2202-2209 Pouresmaeil, K ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
High-voltage power supplies (HVPSs) are widely used to drive vacuum tubes, inherently susceptible to vacuum arc faults. Owing to the considerable cost of vacuum tubes, the HVPS should enjoy a reliable, fast protection mechanism. A common protection mechanism against vacuum arc faults is the shunt crowbar. The crowbar diverts the energy stored in the elements of the HVPS through itself as a parallel path, thereby protecting vacuum tubes from irrecoverable damages. Among all types of the shunt crowbar, the thyristor-based crowbar along with the fault current limiter (FCL) resistors attracts more attention because of its more reliable operation. The absence of the comprehensive design procedure...

An Extremely low ripple high voltage power supply for pulsed current applications

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
This article describes the development of an 18 kV, 30 kW power supply for a pulsed current load with the maximum current of 20 A and a di/dt equal to 100 A/μs. The achieved output ripple is less than 0.01%. In such a high level of precision, the most important issues are considerable difference between the instantaneous and average output powers, as well as insufficient reaction speed of the converter to the fast load change. Very low level of the voltage feedback and its sensitivity to the noise. The first issue necessitates a notable overdesign of the converter switches if the output voltage precision is dedicated to the converter. The second issue raises the problems relevant to...

    Abstract
Dynamic environmental loads, such as winds and waves, make the stability of offshore structures at high risk, requiring reliable yet efficient control elements to ensure the stability of such structures under lateral loads. Among the variety of control elements that have been developed to enhance the stability of a structure, shape memory alloy (SMA)-based control elements are promising as they are low-cost, easy to embed into the main control element, and do not need an external power supply. However, cyclic loads may highly influence the performance and functionality of SMA-based elements. The present work investigates the effects of pre-straining SMA components in energy dissipation...

A high-voltage series-stacked IGBT switch with active energy recovery feature for pulsed power applications

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics ; Volume 67, Issue 5 , 2020 , Pages 3650-3661 Mohsenzade, S ; Zarghani, M ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2020
    Abstract
Applying series configuration of the insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) to the pulsed power supplies offers unique features such as compactness and long life time. In the high-voltage pulsed power supplies, a large number of the IGBTs are required to be serially connected. Hence, the safe operating condition provision for the series IGBTs is an important and crucial issue. The effect of the voltage unbalancing factors becomes remarkable when the number of switches in the series structure increases. There are passive and active methods to balance the voltage of the series IGBTs. In both of these methods, an amount of power must be dissipated to remove the effect of the voltage...

    Abstract
The integration of various energy supplying systems increases the energy efficiency and energy system reliability. Smart microgrids are an ideal area to use multi-carrier energy systems. In this context, this study presents a novel modelling framework for optimal day-ahead scheduling of a networked multi-carrier energy microgrid (NMCEMG) system. The NMCEMG system in this study is composed of heat, gas, and power supply networks. The presented framework has enhanced the multicarrier microgrid modelling against the previous works that modelled the multi-carrier microgrid as an energy hub due to difficulties in the energy flow analysis of heat and gas networks. The proposed framework optimises...

A series stacked IGBT switch based on a concentrated clamp mode snubber for pulsed power applications

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics ; Volume 34, Issue 10 , 2019 , Pages 9573-9584 ; 08858993 (ISSN) Zarghani, M ; Mohsenzade, S ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2019
    Abstract
Clamp mode snubbers are very well suited for the series structure of the insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) in pulsed power applications. They properly meet the necessities expected from them such as the fast operating of the series IGBTs since they have no effect on the gate side. In addition, they can provide safe voltage condition for the IGBTs in short circuit faults, which are very probable in pulsed applications. The clamp mode snubber can perform its voltage balancing task whenever the power capacity of the snubber can support the injected powers due to the voltage unbalancing factors. This paper initially introduces the main factors injecting power to the snubbers. Then, it...

    Abstract
Isolated, high-density DC-DC converters play a crucial role in the power supply unit of information technology industries. By virtue of high efficiency and high power density, LLC resonant converters-among the rest of DC-DC converters-are suitable candidates for this application. The magnetic structure of this converter, however, is a bulky, dissipative part, which has a considerable portion of power loss. Improvement in the size and efficiency of the LLC transformer will lead to an overall enhancement of power density and efficiency of the converter. Nevertheless, the optimization of planar transformers for the LLC converter has not been studied enough. This paper proposes a...
