Process Capability Analysis of Additive Manufacturing Process through Predictive Model of Dimensional and Geometric Errors based on Machine Learning

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Abdolahi, Alireza (Author) ; Khodaygan, Saeed (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Additive manufacturing (AM)has gained extensive industrial and research attention in recent years. Reducing manufacturing waste, lead-time and costs and the ability to build surfaces and parts with complex shapes, assemblies all at once or parts with internal features are some benefits of AM. However, complex error generation mechanisms underlying AM digital physical chains are likely to result in geometrical inaccuracies of the final product, thus posing significant challenges to design and tolerancing for AM. Therefore, predictive modeling of shape deviations is critical for AM. With increasing volumes and varieties of data, machine learning has gained extraordinary popularity due to its...

Improving GPGPU Performance Through Efficient use of Memory Controllers

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Bakhishi, Mohammad Hazhir (Author) ; Sarbazi Azad, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Appearance of CUDA architecture results in GPU introduction as a suitable platform for parallel processing. Massive usage of GPGPUs in various applications forces the manufacturers to produce this processor with different configurations based on their application demands. But always the design approach observes a ratio between processing capability and bandwidth of GPGPUs. In this way mostly in all GPGPU series the bandwidth increases with growth of GPGPU processing power. At first glance this ratio seems reasonable because more process needs more data. However this approach does not pay attention to the behavior of a wide range of workloads which do not need such a bandwidth. Mentioned...

Using Multivariate Tukey distribution in Multivariare Process Capability Indices

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ebrahimi, Samaneh (Author) ; Mahlooji, Hashem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we will provide a comprehensive study of process capability indices, and we use multivariate g-and-h Tukey distribution for calculating process capability indices of multivariate non-normal processes. Univariate process capability indices have been used commonly in literature for measuring the capability of a process. However, there are several processes with more than one quality characteristic. When these characteristics are independent, we can use univariate process capability indices, but when the characteristics are dependent we should use multivariate methods for measuring process capability. There have been several studies about multivariate process capability indices,...

    Abstract
The principle, configuration, and the special features of a stable platform digital controller are presented in this paper. The main goal of this paper is replacing an analog controller with its awaiting digital one. This has been done using TMS320LF2402 digital signal processor which offers the enhanced TMS320 DSP architectural design of the C2xx core CPU for low-cost, low-power, and high-performance processing capabilities. The experimental results show that the digital controller is identical to the analog one and can be a suitable replacement for the analog controller. Abstract
There are numerous measurement methods for process performance control. One of which, widely used in quality control programs, is process capability (Cp) index. The advantage of this index is due to the high amount of information extracted from it. Since Cpis independent from a particular measurement unit it can be used to compare several quite different processes. While the relative efficiency of the process performance based on the Cpfor a period is satisfying, the process may lose efficiency in the next period for variety of reasons and could not keep up with the standard limits. The objective of this paper is to develop a new approach for measuring the relative efficiency of peer...

    Abstract
Different multivariate process capability indices are developed by researchers to evaluate process capability when vectors of quality characteristics are considered in a study. This paper presents two indices referred to as NCpM,and MCpM, in order to evaluate process capability in multivariate environment. The performance of the proposed indices is investigated numerically. Simulation results indicate that the proposed indices have descended estimation error and improved performance compared to the existing ones. These results can be important to researchers and practitioners who are interested in evaluating process capability in multivariate domain

Predicting fitting quality of mechanical assemblies through statistical-based process capability analysis

    , Article SAE 2011 World Congress and Exhibition, Detroit, MI, 12 April 2011 through 14 April 2011 ; 2011 Movahhedy, M. R ; Khodaygan, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The process capability indices are widely used to measure the capability of the process to manufacture objects within the required tolerance. Fit quality is mainly dominated by the distribution of fit dimensions, i.e., a gap dimension. As the fit dimensions are very difficult to be measured in mass production, they are not to be considered as a direct inspection objective. The quality inspection and evaluation relative to fit quality are focused on whether the processes of assembly requirements are conformed with their specification limits respectively. Fit quality specification can be indicated by the process capability indices of mating parts. In this paper, the statistical-based process...

Intelligent tolerance allocation for a high duty brake

    , Article 2005 SAE World Congress, Detroit, MI, 11 April 2005 through 14 April 2005 ; 2005 ; 01487191 (ISSN) Movahhedy, M. R ; Atharifar, H ; Gholami, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a tolerance allocation approach is proposed which attempts to select tolerances for individual dimensional variables of a product in a way that minimizes the cost while maintaining critical design requirements. The algorithm uses a reciprocal power cost-tolerance function which incorporates variable sensitivities computed in a DLM-based tolerance analysis technique. The process capabilities are applied as constraints and the genetic algorithm is used to find the optimum solution. The method is applied to a heavy duty brake problem and its results are presented. A novel approach on project performance monitoring and overrun probability measurement using statistical process control techniques

    , Article Proceedings, Annual Conference - Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, 14 June 2011 through 17 June 2011 ; Volume 4 , June , 2011 , Pages 2937-2946 Mobtadi, R ; Mortaheb, M. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The earned value management (EVM) is a tool commonly used to monitor both cost and schedule performance, based on the current status of a project. However, EVM does not consider the variation rate of project performance during project execution phase, which may oscillate, causing unexpected time and cost overruns or even project failure at the end. In this research, a methodology for monitoring project time and cost adverse variation rate, by the use of statistical process control (SPC), is introduced. This methodology improves the previous investigations in this field by considering overall required conditions and circumstances. Process capability indices of SPC, as a very powerful tool for...

Functional process capability analysis in mechanical systems

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Vol. 73, issue. 5-8 , July , 2014 , p. 899-912 ; 02683768 Khodaygan, S ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Functional quality in the mechanical products is governed mainly by the degree of satisfaction of the design requirements, which itself depends on the variations in the effective variables. The functional parameters cannot be easily measured in mass production, and thus, are not usually considered as a direct inspection objective. Process capability indices are useful tools for evaluating the ability of a process to produce the dependent variables of a product that meet certain specifications. In this paper, the conventional process capability concept is extended to develop a computational tool for analysis of the functional quality of a mechanical product. Through defining new proper...

Fuzzy-based analysis of process capability for assembly quality assessment in mechanical assemblies

    , Article International Journal of Production Research ; Volume 50, Issue 12 , 2012 , Pages 3395-3415 ; 00207543 (ISSN) Khodaygan, S ; Movahhedy, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Process capability indices are useful tools for evaluating the ability of a process to produce products that meet certain specifications. The assembly quality is dependent on the distribution of variations of assembly dimensions, which is in turn dependent on mating conditions in the mechanical assembly. Since it is often difficult to measure the assembly dimensions in the production stages, they are not considered as a direct inspection objective. Rather, the inspection and evaluation of quality is carried out by specifying whether the assembly requirements satisfy the specified limits. Therefore, we can basethe process capability indices on the assembly dimensions. In most real life cases,...

, Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; 2017 , Pages 1-16 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Khodaygan, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Imprecise productions with low quality are produced by the incapable manufacturing processes. Prediction of the process capability in the design stage plays a key role to improve the product quality. Abstract
In some quality control applications, quality of a product or a process can be characterized by a profile defined as a functional relationship between a response variable and one or more explanatory variables. Many researchers have contributed to the development of linear and nonlinear profiles to monitor a process or product. However, less work has been devoted to the development of process capability indices in profile monitoring to evaluate process performance with respect to specification limits. This paper presents a process capability analysis when the quality characteristic of interest is represented by a linear profile. Simulation analyses along with a real case study in leather...

A transformation technique to estimate the process capability index for non-normal processes

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 40, Issue 5-6 , 2009 , Pages 512-517 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Hosseinifard, S. Z ; Abbasi, B ; Ahmad, S ; Abdollahian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Estimating the process capability index (PCI) for non-normal processes has been discussed by many researches. There are two basic approaches to estimating the PCI for non-normal processes. The first commonly used approach is to transform the non-normal data into normal data using transformation techniques and then use a conventional normal method to estimate the PCI for transformed data. This is a straightforward approach and is easy to deploy. The alternate approach is to use non-normal percentiles to calculate the PCI. The latter approach is not easy to implement and a deviation in estimating the distribution of the process may affect the efficacy of the estimated PCI. The aim of this...

Expert key selection impact on the MANETs' performance using probabilistic key management algorithm

    , Article SIN 2013 - Proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Security of Information and Networks ; 2013 , Pages 347-351 ; 9781450324984 (ISBN) Gharib, M ; Minaei, M ; Golkari, M ; Movaghar, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have been turned into very attractive area of research in the duration of recent years, whereas security is the most challenging point that they undergo. Cryptography is an essential solution for providing security within MANETs. However, storing all keys in every node, if practically possible, is inefficient in large scale MANETs due to some limitations such as memory or process capability. This paper extends our previous idea which was a novel probabilistic key management algorithm that stores only a few randomly chosen keys instead of all ones. In this paper, several different scenarios are proposed for key selection in which they are more practical, and...
