Real-time simulation of the nonlinear visco-elastic deformations of soft tissues

    , Article International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery ; Volume 6, Issue 3 , 2011 , Pages 297-307 ; 18616410 (ISSN) Basafa, E ; Farahmand, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Purpose: Mass-spring-damper (MSD) models are often used for real-time surgery simulation due to their fast response and fairly realistic deformation replication. An improved real time simulation model of soft tissue deformation due to a laparoscopic surgical indenter was developed and tested. Method: The mechanical realization of conventional MSD models was improved using nonlinear springs and nodal dampers, while their high computational efficiency was maintained using an adapted implicit integration algorithm. New practical algorithms for model parameter tuning, collision detection, and simulation were incorporated. Results: The model was able to replicate complex biological soft tissue...

A comparative numerical study on the performances and vortical patterns of two bioinspired oscillatory mechanisms: Undulating and pure heaving

    , Article Applied Bionics and Biomechanics ; Volume 2015 , 2015 ; 11762322 (ISSN) Ebrahimi, M ; Abbaspour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    IOS Press  2015
    Abstract
The hydrodynamics and energetics of bioinspired oscillating mechanisms have received significant attentions by engineers and biologists to develop the underwater and air vehicles. Undulating and pure heaving (or plunging) motions are two significant mechanisms which are utilized in nature to provide propulsive, maneuvering, and stabilization forces. This study aims to elucidate and compare the propulsive vortical signature and performance of these two important natural mechanisms through a systematic numerical study. Navier-Stokes equations are solved, by a pressure-based finite volume method solver, in an arbitrary Lagrangian- Eulerian (ALE) framework domain containing a 2D NACA0012 foil...

A study of employees' views of strategic information systems in Iranian banks: The case of internet banking

    , Article International Journal of Information and Communication Technology ; Volume 7, Issue 1 , 2015 , Pages 52-72 ; 14666642 (ISSN) Farzaneh, M ; Najafloo, F ; Rasouli, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Inderscience Enterprises Ltd  2015
    Abstract
Internet banking is a tool to achieve competitive advantage and its usage has been spreading rapidly in recent years. This paper strives to identify a comprehensive study of the major internet banking quality measurements, which covers a wide range of literature relevant to international papers and scholars and then evaluate them through using a precise method, Shannon entropy. At the last stage the validated criteria were exploited to survey in Iranian banks. The empirical research consists of a quantitative study of internet banking by a sample of employees in two banks of Iran. In this regard, the raised question is about whether or not the internet banking is a strategic information...

    Abstract
Terahertz spectroscopy is a useful and an efficient method for detection of pure materials and also mixture compounds. In the present study the terahertz spectra of the α-lactose, high explosives RDX and also the binary mixture of mentioned materials has been obtained in the transition mode. The obtained spectra of the pure materials were in a very good agreement with literatures in the range of 0.1 to 1.5 terahertz. The spectra of mixture samples which show the specific fingerprint characters of each component, declare that terahertz spectroscopy can be used effectively for the detection of explosives and chemical compounds even in the mixture samples. © 2016 IEEE

An optimized probabilistic edge based level set method for left ventricle segmentation in echocardiography images

    , Article Biomedical Research (India) ; Volume 28, Issue 8 , 2017 , Pages 3788-3793 ; 0970938X (ISSN) Sahba, N ; Fatemizadeh, E ; Behnam, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Scientific Publishers of India  2017
    Abstract
In this paper, an efficient approach for ultrasonic object segmentation with special application for left ventricle segmentation in echocardiography images is proposed. At first, an efficient hybrid trend for ultrasonic image edge detection is suggested. Then, a modified level set approach is introduced based on the extracted edges and the computed probabilistic map as the stopping criteria for the contour evolution. Both synthetic and clinical images are utilized as validation measures with respect to the prior techniques which indicate outperform results quantitatively and qualitatively. Left ventricle segmentation using proposed method illustrates expert-approved performance, providing a...

Numerical study of the effect of vascular bed on heat transfer during high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation of the liver tumor

    , Article Journal of Thermal Biology ; Volume 86 , 2019 ; 03064565 (ISSN) Mohammadpour, M ; Firoozabadi, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2019
    Abstract
In this study, the influence of vascular bed comprising terminal arterial branches on heat transfer in a liver tumor exposed to high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is studied numerically. Also, the effect of vascular density on temperature distribution is investigated. A coupled set of acoustics, thermal, and fluid models is used to calculate the temperature distribution in the liver. The numerical model is established based on the Westervelt and bioheat equations along with the Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, the acoustic streaming effect is included with Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow assumptions. It is found that in a vascular bed comprising terminal arterial branches, the...

Assessment of sustainable groundwater resources management using integrated environmental index: Case studies across Iran

    , Article Science of the Total Environment ; Volume 676 , 2019 , Pages 792-810 ; 00489697 (ISSN) Hosseini, S. M ; Parizi, E ; Ataie Ashtiani, B ; Simmons, C. T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2019
    Abstract
Assessing environmentally sustainable GW management (ESGM) needs a deep knowledge of the present and the projected status of GW (GW) quantity and quality. Translations of these data into policy relevant information are usually done through quantitative indices. Despite the availability of a dozen GW sustainability indicators, defining an integrated index based on internationally accepted scientific standards indicators is required. To fill this gap, an in-depth review on the developed indicators/index for evaluation of GW sustainable management (GWSM) from an environmental viewpoint at aquifer scales is provided in this study. Thirteen environmentally related quantitative indicators are...
