, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asadi, Atefeh (Author) ; Houshmand, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Time based competition is considered as an importance strategy in the contemporary manufacturing systems. Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) is a new paradigm that not only produces the products with high productivity but also allows for rapid response to market changes. Despite the large impact on company performance, the importance of due date setting and order planning processes and related decisions is underexposed in the literature of RMS. The most important contribution of this thesis is orders planning under setting due date in make-to-order RMS environment. This thesis seeks to determine the best selection of several orders, their sequencing and corresponding configurations...

Reconfigurable Manufacturing systems (RMS) are a relatively new paradigm in industry that enable rapid adjustments of production capacity to changes in product mix and volume through their main characteristics including modularity, scalability and...

Production Planning and Configuration Selection in a Reconfigurable Manufacturing System (RMS) Considering Raw Materials

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Keshavarz Mohammadian, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Houshmand, Mahmoud (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The Reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) was first introduced in 1996 with the ability to respond quickly to market changes and in response to global competition between companies. The effort of this research is to expand the problem presented in the Moghaddam et al. (2019) by introducing the concept of raw materials for the production of parts and related issues such as purchasing and warehousing raw materials, and providing a suitable solution to the problem. In the basic article, the RMS should utilize the best combination of machines and their configurations in proportion to the demand of the products in order to minimize the cost and produce all the demand. In this study, a large...

Production planning and performance optimization of reconfigurable manufacturing systems using genetic algorithm

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Volume 54, Issue 1-4 , 2011 , Pages 373-392 ; 02683768 (ISSN) Abbasi, M ; Houshmand, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
To stay competitive in the new dynamic market having large fluctuations in product demand, manufacturing companies must use systems that not only produce their goods with high productivity but also allow for rapid response to market changes. Reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) is a new paradigm that enables manufacturing systems to respond quickly and cost effectively to market demand. In other words, RMS is a system designed from the outset, for rapid changes in both hardware and software components, in order to quickly adjust its production capacity to fluctuations in market demand and adapt its functionality to new products. The effectiveness of an RMS depends on implementing its...

Integration of simulation and fuzzy multi-attribute decision making for modelling and assessment of fuzzy parameters

    , Article International Journal of Industrial and Systems Engineering ; Volume 6, Issue 4 , 2010 , Pages 483-502 ; 17485037 (ISSN) Azadeh, A ; Seifoory, M ; Abbasi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
This article introduces a methodology to integrate fuzzy multiattribute decision making (FMADM) and fuzzy simulation. According to this method, a fuzzy simulation method is applied to study the effect of different alternative on system's performance and decision criteria taking into account fuzzy inputs. Using a fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) and the results of fuzzy simulation, a FMADM is conducted to select the best alternative. This article introduces how to incorporate fuzzy set theory with discrete-event simulation in order to model uncertain activity duration in simulating a realworld system, especially when insufficient or no sample data are available. A case study is...

Configuration design in scalable reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS); a case of single-product flow line (SPFL)

    , Article International Journal of Production Research ; 2017 , Pages 1-23 ; 00207543 (ISSN) Moghaddam, S. K ; Houshmand, M ; Fatahi Valilai, O ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The dynamic nature of today’s manufacturing industry, which is caused by the intense global competition and constant technological advancements, requires systems that are highly adaptive and responsive to demand fluctuations. Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) enable such responsiveness through their main characteristics. This paper addresses the problem of RMS configuration design, where the demand of a single product varies throughout its production life cycle, and the system configuration must change accordingly to satisfy the required demand with minimum cost. A two-phased method is developed to handle the primary system configuration design and the necessary system...

    Abstract
Intense global competition, dynamic product variations, and rapid technological developments force manufacturing systems to adapt and respond quickly to various changes in the market. Such responsiveness could be achieved through new paradigms such as Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS). In this paper, the problem of configuration design for a scalable reconfigurable RMS that produces different products of a part family is addressed. In order to handle demand fluctuations of products throughout their lifecycles with minimum cost, RMS configurations must change as well. Two different approaches are developed for addressing the system configuration design in different periods. Both...
