Integrated coastal management plan in free trade zones, a case study

    , Article Ocean and Coastal Management ; Volume 54, Issue 2 , February , 2011 , Pages 129-136 ; 09645691 (ISSN) Pak, A ; Majd, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Free Trade Zones (FTZs) around the world offer special advantages to investors and facilitate import/export of goods in order to boost the regional economy. Integrated coastal management in these areas faces special challenges in addition to what ordinary ICZMs usually encounter. For a successful ICZM plan, the very strong business orientation in FTZs has to be taken into account, while other important aspects such as environmental, social, and cultural issues should not be overlooked. The problem becomes more difficult where the free zone is situated in sensitive and valuable environmental circumstances.Kish Island, a free trade zone in the Persian Gulf region, has recently been the focus...

Precision enhancement in ETSI-Hata propagation model tuning using experimental data in a dense urban area

    , Article International Journal of Communication Systems ; Volume 23, Issue 1 , 2010 , Pages 101-108 ; 10745351 (ISSN) Atamanesh, M ; Farzaneh, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper an enhanced ETSI-Hata propagation model tuning is presented. The three-dimensional (3D) digital terrain map (DTM) was included in the simulation process. For the enhancement of the model tuning process and precision verification of ETSI-Hata model, the real 3D map of the buildings of the simulated area was incorporated over the DTM. Multiple knife edge diffraction method and the antenna effective height method were used to calculate the diffraction loss. This method was applied for a real urban scenario. For every sector in the coverage area, a tuned model was exploited. Using a genetic algorithm, frequency planning for the entire urban area was performed, which resulted in an...

Resilience of civil infrastructure by optimal risk mitigation

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 23, Issue 5 , 2016 , Pages 1961-1974 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Mahsuli, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This paper puts forward a framework for optimal mitigation of regional risk to enhance the resilience of civil infrastructure. To meet this objective, probabilistic models, methods, and software are developed and applied. The work is conducted within a new reliability-based approach, in which reliability methods compute risk. This contrasts several contemporary approaches for risk analysis. Risk, in this context, denotes the probability of exceeding monetary loss. Evaluating such probabilities requires probabilistic models for hazards, response, damage, and loss. This motivates the following contributions in this paper. First, a new computer program is developed that is tailored to conduct...

Resiliency via integrated coastal management in Kish Island

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 23, Issue 4 , 2016 , Pages 1708-1718 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Pak, A ; Majd, F ; Mohammadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Small islands around the world face various hazards such as sea-water level rise, hurricanes, human activities over pressure, environmental degradation, and pollution. Resiliency is a critical feature that has to be maintained in these sensitive and vulnerable areas. This paper focuses on the importance of Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) in increasing the level of resiliency in small islands. Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) has been recommended for practice by United Nations 1992 Rio Conference resolution to conserve the valuable natural resources of the coastal areas around the globe and improve their deteriorating environmental conditions. Integrated coastal management plan...

METRIC and WaPOR estimates of evapotranspiration over the Lake Urmia basin: Comparative analysis and composite assessment

    , Article Water (Switzerland) ; Volume 11, Issue 8 , 2019 ; 20734441 (ISSN) Javadian, M ; Behrangi, A ; Gholizadeh, M ; Tajrishy, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Evapotranspiration is one of the main components of water and energy balance. In this study, we compare two ET products, suitable for regional analysis at high spatial resolution: The recent WaPOR product developed by FAO and METRIC algorithm. WaPOR is based on ETLook, which is a two-source model and relies on microwave images. WaPOR is unique as it has no limitation under cloudy days, but METRIC is limited by clouds. METRIC and WaPOR are more sensitive to land surface temperature and soil moisture, respectively. Using two years (2010 and 2014) of data over Lake Urmia basin, we show that in most areas, ET from METRIC is higher than WaPOR and the difference has an ascending trend with the...

The application of multi-criteria (AHP-PROMETHEE) decision-making methods in selecting and prioritizing the green area irrigation resources

    Abstract
One of the underlying factors in the conservation and development of urban green spaces is the available water resources use for green areas in each region. The primary purpose of this study is to introduce the integration of a proper simulation method for runoff along with AHP-PROMETHEE decision-making method for water resources management in urban basins. The application of this approach was investigated in the city Buin Zahra of Qazvin Province of Iran. In the first step by using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), the available water resources in the case study were weighted. In the second step, the water resources of the municipal and residential wells and water collected by...

Multi-criteria decision making for integrated urban water management

    , Article Water Resources Management ; Volume 22, Issue 8 , 2008 , Pages 1017-1029 ; 09204741 (ISSN) Zarghami, M ; Abrishamchi, A ; Ardakanian, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
The city of Zahedan, in South-eastern Iran, has high population growth, limited local freshwater resources and inadequate water distribution system resulting in water supply failures in recent years. This paper will investigate integration of several demand management measures such as leakage detection on water distribution network, water metering and low volume water fixtures as well as the conjunctive use of surface and groundwater resources of this city. For integration of water management criteria, compromise programming will be used as a multi-objective decision making method. The criteria include minimizing the cost, maximizing water supply and minimizing the social hazards due to the...

    Abstract
Using an in-house developed software the signal level, the best server cells, and the amount of interference using standard propagation models are determined in a cellular environment. The program is also able to assign the frequency channels automatically to the TRXs taking into account the carrier to interference and the traffic distribution using a genetic algorithm. In this paper, the cost function is based on the total Carrier to Interference ratio (C/I) and the traffic density of the serving area. The software by means of a genetic algorithm approaches a frequency assignment which increases the overall quality of service throughout the cellular network. The package has been used in a...

A multifractal detrended fluctuation description of Iranian rial-US dollar exchange rate

    , Article Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications ; Volume 367 , 2006 , Pages 328-336 ; 03784371 (ISSN) Norouzzadeh, P ; Rahmani, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
The miltifractal properties and scaling behaviour of the exchange rate variations of the Iranian rial against the US dollar from a daily perspective is numerically investigated. For this purpose the multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA) is used. Through multifractal analysis, the scaling exponents, generalized Hurst exponents, generalized fractal dimensions and singularity spectrum are derived. Moreover, contribution of two major sources of multifractality, that is, fat-tailed probability distributions and nonlinear temporal correlations are studied. © 2005 Elsevier B.V.
