Improving Reliability and Durability of Phase Change Main Memories

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Asadinia, Marjan (Author) ; Sarbazi Azad, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) has been the leading main memory technology during the last four decades. In deep sub-micron regime, however, scaling DRAM comes with several challenges caused by charge leakage and imprecise charge placement. Phase Change Memory (PCM) technology is known as one of the most promising technologies to replace DRAM. Compared to competitive non-volatile memories, PCM benefits from best attributes of fast random access, negligible leakage energy, superior scalability, high density, and operating in both Single-level Cell (SLC) and Multi-level Cell (MLC) storage levels without imposing large storage overhead. Unfortunately, density advantage of MLC PCM devices...

Reliability Improvement in Aging-sensitive Units of a Processor

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Rohbani, Nezam (Author) ; Miremadi, Ghasem (Supervisor) ; Ejlali, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Despite the advantages of shrinking transistors’ dimensions, e.g. decrease in power consumption and fabrication cost and increase in their switching speed, it has an adverse impact on some characteristics of nano-scale (less than 130nm) transistors that can reduce the system lifetime. Bias Temperature Instability (BTI) and Hot Carrier Injection (HCI) are amongst the most important adverse effects of transistor shrinkage. These two effects, are known as transistor aging, decrease the switching speed of the transistors by increasing the threshold voltage and decreasing the charge carriers’ mobility in the channel of transistors. Temperature, operating voltage, and the size of transistors have...

Design and Implementation of Software-Managed Energy Optimization Techniques for a Multi-Core Embedded Processor

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Karimi Fatemi, Masoud (Author) ; Ejlali, Alireza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, due to the need of high performance systems, embedded systems have been redirected to multicore architectures. As energy consumption is one of the most important issues in embedded systems, careful considerations must be taken during the design of embedded systems to achieve low energy consumption. In this thesis, we propose the use of hybrid scratchpad memories to achieve low energy consumption. The hybrid memory uses both SRAM and STT-RAM memory. While STT-RAM has very low static energy consumption it suffers from high latency and energy consumption during write activities. In order to tackle this problem, we have devised a genetic algorithm that exploits architecture information...

Dependability Improvement of Embedded Systems through Compiler Level Approaches

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mokhtarpour, Azadeh (Author) ; Miremadi, Ghassem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Reliability is an important concern in safety-critical applications. Hardware and software redundancies are used to include reliability in such systems. Software approaches benefit from high flexibility and low cost. Moreover, they do not impose any hardware modifications to the design. The most important challenges of software approaches are performance and code size overheads. Some of software reliability approaches duplicate all of the program’s instructions which impose high performance overhead to the designs. Some other approaches only apply the redaduncies to critical instructions in the programs. While these approaches impose the the performance overhead but they suffer from fault...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ghasemi, Golsa (Author) ; Miremadi, Ghassem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The development of embedded systems in safety critical applications leads to using fault tolerant methods to improve their dependability. Among the various fault tolerant methods, recently, software based methods are more appealing during to the following reasons: 1) They are applicable to the Commercial-Off-The Shelf (COTS) processors and lead to reduction in cost and time to market, 2) Unlike the traditional hardware based internal error detection methods, software based methods fault coverage are more promising, and 3)Software-based methods are cheaper, quicker and do not require any hardware modifications. The technology scaling trend in recent years, made system more vulnerable to...

Optimal Placement of Remote Control Switches to Reduce Network Losses and Enhance Service Quality

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gharebaghi, Sina (Author) ; Safdarian, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, improvement in operational condition of distribution networks considering daily growth in electrical energy usage with financial limits appears as a huge challenge for network operators. Under these kind of circumstances, operators need to have efficient and inexpensive plans more than ever. Considering high share of power losses in overall pro-duced power, utilities always tried to minimize losses in Iran and other points of world. In addition, numerous equipment in distribution networks compared with the transmission level, impose high costs to reliability plans. Therefore, reliability improvement plans have been paid low attention by distribution network operators. This lower...

Reconfiguration and Capcitor Placement in Distribution Systems for Loss Reduction and Reliability Enhancement

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rezaei, Pooya (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Capacitor setting and reconfiguration are of main means of loss reduction and voltage profile improvement in distribution system operation. Cooperation between these two strategies can effectively minimize power losses in distribution system automation. Also, from the medium and long term viewpoint, capacitor placement and reconfiguration can be used for loss reduction and reliability enhancement. In this section, the sum of losses cost, capacitor investment cost and reliability cost should be minimized. Regarding the need to solve two non-linear combinatorial optimization problems simultaneously, metaheuristic algorithms are used in this thesis. Specifically, Elitist Genetic Algorithm,...

    Abstract
This study proposes an approach for improving service reliability in the distribution network based on establishing competition among electric distribution utilities. The idea behind this approach is to categorise the utilities and compare the performance of utilities located in one cluster with the other members of the same cluster. The reward/penalty mechanism (RPM) as a quality regulating instrument is designed for each cluster and used to penalise the utilities with a performance worse than the benchmark and to reward them for providing a performance better than the benchmark. Based on the RPM, utilities located in one cluster compete to make more profit by serving customers in better...

The impacts of implementing a specific automation scheme on reliability indices of a given distribution system can be different from other available automation schemes. For this reason, when comparing the available automation schemes with each other or with the other reliability improvement measures, it is necessary to perform a course of reliability...

A data recomputation approach for reliability improvement of scratchpad memory in embedded systems

    , Article Proceedings - IEEE International Symposium on Defect and Fault Tolerance in VLSI Systems ; 2014 , pp. 228-233 Sayadi, H ; Farbeh, H ; Monazzah, A. M. H ; Miremadi, S. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Scratchpad memory (SPM) is extensively used as the on-chip memory in modern embedded processors alongside of the cache memory or as its alternative. Soft errors in SPM are one of the major contributors to system failures, due to ever-increasing susceptibility of SPM cells to energetic particle strikes. Since a large fraction of soft errors occurs in the shape of Multiple-Bit Upsets (MBUs), traditional memory protection techniques, i.e., Error Correcting Code (ECCs), are not affordable for SPM protection; mainly because of their limited error coverage and/or their high overheads. This paper proposes a novel algorithm that efficiently protects SPM with high error correction capability and...

    Abstract
With continuous technology downscaling, the rate of radiation induced soft errors is rapidly increasing. Fast and accurate soft error vulnerability analysis in early design stages plays an important role in cost-effective reliability improvement. However, existing solutions are suitable for either regular (a.k.a address-based such as memory hierarchy) or irregular (random logic such as functional units and control logic) structures, failing to provide an accurate system-level analysis. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach integrating architecture-level and logic-level techniques to accurately estimate the vulnerability of all regular and irregular structures within a microprocessor....

On the investment in a reliability improvement program for warranted second-hand items

    , Article IIE Transactions (Institute of Industrial Engineers) ; Volume 43, Issue 7 , Mar , 2011 , Pages 525-534 ; 0740817X (ISSN) Shafiee, M ; Chukova, S ; Yun, W. Y ; Niaki, S. T. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
A reliability improvement program (such as an upgrade action) can be seen as an investment by a dealer to restore a second-hand product to a better operational state. Due to the nature of the actions performed, the item's reliability at the end of this program is usually uncertain. This article develops a stochastic cost-benefit model for investment made in reliability improvement programs for second-hand items sold with failure-free warranty. Depending on the product's lifetime modeling approach, two modifications of the model are considered and are solved for the optimal improvement level. A real case application of the model is presented to validate the proposed approach

    Abstract
The reliable transfer in Network on Chips (NoCs) can be threatened by crosstalk fault occurring in wires. Crossstalk fault is due to inter-wire coupling capacitance that based on the patterns of transitions appearing on the wires, significantly limits the reliability of NoCs. Among these transitions, 101 and 010 bit patterns impose the worst crosstalk effects to wires. This work intends to increase the reliability of NoCs against crosstalk faults by applying an improved Fibonacci-based numeral system, called Doubled-Penultimate Fibonacci (DP-Fibo). In the DP-Fibo coding algorithm, code words without ‘101’ and ‘010’ bit patterns are produced to reduce crosstalk faults. Experimental results...

    Abstract
In this paper, the effect of wind power generation on power system reliability is investigated. Furthermore, reliability improvement of power system using integrated battery energy storage system and wind farm will be evaluated. Growing demand for electrical energy, gradual diminishing of fossil fuel resources and environmental pollution due to continuous exploitation of them, have led to inevitable change of energy sources in power generation. Due to the random nature of wind speed, the power output of a wind farm is fluctuating; as a result, it does not have a proper control capability. The growing penetration of wind power generation in power system could cause various problems in...

    Abstract
This paper proposes a reliability-aware application mapping for mesh-based NoCs. The proposed reliable mapping, called RMAP, adds redundant communications to the application graph in order to improve the reliability of packet delivery in NoCs. The RMAP divides the application graph into two sub-graphs which have the lowest possible communication with each other. One of the sub-graphs is mapped on the upper triangular nodes of the NoC and the other is mapped on the lower triangular nodes. In this way, lower traffic load is imposed on some channels which are efficiently used to route packets of redundant communications. This minimizes the overheads imposed to the NoC due to redundant...

Complement routing: A methodology to design reliable routing algorithm for network on chips

    , Article Microprocessors and Microsystems ; Volume 34, Issue 6 , 2010 , Pages 163-173 ; 01419331 (ISSN) Patooghy, A ; Miremadi, S. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Use of deep sub-micron VLSI technologies in fabrication of Network on Chips (NoCs) makes the reliability to be one of the first order concerns in the design of these products. This paper proposes and evaluates a methodology that adds reliability to NoC routing algorithms with minimal power and performance overheads. The key idea behind this methodology is to use the concept of complement routing in which two routing algorithms with disjoint sets of allowed turns are incorporated. According to this methodology, while a packet is routed by a routing algorithm, a redundant copy of that packet is routed by the complement of that routing algorithm. This is done by exploiting channels with lower...
