Wind Harvesting via Vortex Induced Vibration for Electricity Generation

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Moradi Gharghani, Farshad (Author) ; Behshad Shafii, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Mousavi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There is a need for renewable energy sources to be more feasible. The purpose of this project is to develop a compact device that is able to harvest wind energy and transform it into electrical energy using the concept of vortex shedding. When calibrated correctly, the vortex shedding will induce resonant oscillation. Electricity would be collected from this oscillation using a magnet and coil assembly. This method was proven to work in water, but has not been applied to air currents. Our group designed and built a small-scale prototype to be tested in closed circuit wind tunnel. The wind harvester works at a moderate wind range of 3 to 5 m/s. Data was collected on the amplitude and...

Optimization of a Multi Carrier System for a "Green Building"

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Rahimzadeh, Azin (Author) ; Shafiee, Mohammad Behshad (Supervisor) ; Roshandel, Ramin (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Ever-increasing energy consumption and consequent extensive greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are two major urgent problems faced by all human beings in the 21st century. As a major contributor, the energy production section appears to be the most suitable field where further improvements could be explored to tackle these problems. Multi carrier energy system is a typical type of next generation energy production technology with higher energy efficiency and lower/zero GHG emissions. The conversion of energy between different carriers establishes a coupling of the corresponding power flows resulting in system interactions. The investigation of such phenomena requires the development of tools for...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Khayyamim, Tara (Author) ; Hajsadeghi, Khosro (Supervisor) ; Zabihollah, Abolghasem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Concerns like fuel cost, pollution and global warming has made it necessary to look for new energy solutions. Renewable and alternative energies have proven themselves to be helpful in this matter. Renewable energy(RE) is the energy that comes from natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat, which are naturally replenished at a constant rate. Renewable energies are environmentally friendly, not cheap at the beginning but naturally available in a constant rate and wide spread, unlike fossil fuels that are localized in the limited places. In this thesis in order to generate environmental friendly power we consider two renewable energy resources: wind and...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Habibi, Ali (Author) ; Khajehpour, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Air pollution has been one of the most important problems in Tehran in recent years. So that the number of deaths due to air pollution in Tehran reaches more than 7000 cases per year. More than 75% of air pollutant emissions in Tehran city (including 60% of PM2.5 emissions) originate from mobile sources. Considering the harmful effects and damages caused by air pollutants, it is important to examine and evaluate the effects of hybrid-electric vehicles on the emissions of the transportation sector and air quality, especially in areas with a large population and realized high traffic load. On the other hand, the continuous reduction of renewable electricity production costs makes electricity a...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hadi, Mohammad Behzad (Author) ; Moeini Aghtaie, Moein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, variable generation and renewable energy resources are increasingly penetrating the energy systems to supply the users' demand at the distribution grid. Variable Energy Resources (VER) can provide energy at a lower cost, and they also guarantee cleaner energy. Besides, the issue of energy balance has always been a challenge for the energy distribution networks. A comprehensive way to unravel this problem is to use flexible resources. One of the crucial issues in the flexibility debate is meeting this need by different energy resources. It is always an issue for...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Choubineh, Kianoosh (Author) ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, Mahmoud (Supervisor) ; Rajabi-Ghahnavieh, Abbas (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In conventional planning methods for an isolated microgrid, loads’s performance is taken into account in a constant power factor. Also, Motor loads dynamics which might results in absorbing a reactive power up to a few times more than the load’s capacity isn’t considered in this methods. Another important issue in the microgrid’s stability is the microgrid’s spinning reserve. Due to the isolated microgrid’s disconnectivity and not considering these problems in small isolated microgrids, the possibility of an instability event in microgrid’s performance would rise enourmously. In this thesis, an isolated microgrid’s planning has been carried out based on a solar resource while taking into...
