Evaluation of the Cyclic Performance of Buckling Restrained Braces with Sliding Friction Connection
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mofid, Masood (Supervisor)
Abstract
In today’s world, the use of lateral load-bearing systems, such as bracings, has become a pretty common practice. Often showing axial deformation behavior, these members exhibit proper performance under tensile loads but tend to become unstable under compressive loads. In contrast to common bracing systems, the buckling-restrained bracing (BRB) systems perform well under not only tensile loads but also compressive loads. Recent studies have paid greater deals of attention to the application of short-core BRB systems in different structures. The bracing core has been shortened to increase the core deformation and hence the energy dissipation capacity of the bracing system. In this condition,...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Nasiri, Habibollah (Supervisor)
Abstract
Natural hazards such as earthquake take many lives each year and cause significant damages to infrastructures such as transportation networks. Whether after occurrence of a natural disaster like storm in order to evacuate, or after an abrupt event such as earthquake in order to provide emergency measures, a transportation network should maintain its functionality and performance in an acceptable degree and should recover in an effectively short period of time. In this study, the link or the set of links which their removal causes significant damage to the transportation network are identified. A specific index (N-Q index) has been used to describe the performance of the network. In addition,...

Analysis and Solution Proposal for Improving the Resiliency of High Voltage Cathode Power Supply
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Kaboli, Shahriyar (Supervisor) ; Safdarian, Amir (Co-Supervisor)
Abstract
High voltage power supplies (HVPS) are widely used to supply the vacuum tubes. The function of this power supply is disturbed by some internal and external faults. One of the external faults is the arc fault in the tube. The amount of delivered energy from the HVPS to the tube is an important issue during the arc fault in the tube. The conventional protection mechanism consists of a shunt crowbar device which divert the fault current from the tube arc. The crowbar circuit is usually built with thyristor in most cases. This type of crowbar cannot be turned off simply by protection command. It is a drawback since if the fault is transient such as arc in the load or false fault detection is...

Probabilistic Framework for Evaluating Community Resilience
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mahsuli, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
Abstract
This study proposes a probabilistic framework to quantitatively evaluate the resilience of a community comprising a building stock, commercial facilities, and interdependent infrastructure systems. To this end, the proposed framework employs Monte Carlo sampling in which each sample comprises multiple stages. The sample starts with the occurrence of a hazard event. It then follows by evaluating the consequences incurred by the community in the face of the hazard event. It is concluded by simulating the operations aimed at complete recovery of the community comprising inspection, rescue and relief, restoration, and recovery. For this purpose, chains of interacting probabilistic models are...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Fotuhi Firuzabad, Mahmoud (Supervisor) ; Rajabi Ghahnavieh, Abbas (Supervisor)
Abstract
Occurrence of natural disasters such as flood, windstorms, tsunamis and earthquakes has caused striking effects on critical infrastructures like power systems in recent decades. There are some examples of high-impact low-possibility (HILP) events which causes catastrophic effects on power systems. Traditionally, planning and operational studies of power system have been run taking into account some reliability metrics. Although, the reliability indices can represent the ability of a system in confronting with possible failures of components, they are unable to efficiently consider the effects of severe events such as earthquake and other HILP events. Moreover, traditional power systems were...
Optimal Enhancement of Community Resilience through Prioritization of Recovery Operations for Interdependent Infrastructures
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Mahsuli, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this study, community resilience after a disaster is optimally enhanced for interdependent infrastructures through prioritization of recovery operations considering limited resources. Optimal enhancement of community resilience can be performed at two levels: Pre-disaster and Post-disaster. In the pre-disaster level, resilience enhancement is achieved through optimization of long-term decision making that includes optimized allocation of resources to retrofit of buildings. However, in the post-disaster response and recovery period, allocating resources to retrofit or backup systems is infeasible. Therefore, in the post-disaster level considered in this study, resilience enhancement is...
