    , Article NDT and E International ; Volume 124 , 2021 ; 09638695 (ISSN) Ashkar, M ; Toufigh, V ; Ghaemian, M ; Azizmohammadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a comprehensive set of linear and nonlinear ultrasonic techniques was performed to investigate the properties of the interface between the roller-compacted concrete (RCC) layers. The effect of different time intervals between the pouring of each layer, cement content of concrete and bedding mortar, and various curing periods on RCC specimens were studied in this research. In linear methods, the interlayer led to velocity dispersion and attenuation phenomena except for the inherent inhomogeneity of specimens. The nonlinear parameters showed a general upward at the earlier ages, while the linear methods did not show an apparent regularity. The ultimate strength results were then...

    , Article Geotechnical and Geological Engineering ; Volume 38, Issue 2 , 2020 , Pages 1949-1969 Soltanianfard, M. A ; Toufigh, V ; Ghaemian, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
The interface behavior of rock and concrete and between layers of concrete highly affects the performance of concrete dam structures. In this investigation, a modified direct shear test was implemented in the laboratory to evaluate the interface behavior between (1) rock and conventional vibrated concrete (CVC), (2) rock and roller compacted concrete (RCC), (3) CVC and RCC and (4) two layers of RCC. Series of in situ shear tests were also performed between rock and concrete. The friction angle and cohesion for all tested interface were determined and analyzed. The effect of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of concrete on the interface behavior was determined. Additionally, the effect of...

Effects of vertical and pinch rolling on residual stress distributions in wire and arc additively manufactured components

    Abstract
Residual stresses are inherent in parts manufactured using the wire + arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) technique, resulting in unpredictable mechanical response and structural integrity (Colegrove et al.: J Mater Process Technol 213:1782-1791, 2013). An effective post-processing technique, which enhances the mechanical properties of WAAM parts, is rolling. This study investigates the vertical and pinch rolling effects on residual stress distribution in WAAM components. Initially, a WAAM model was created using a thermo-mechanical finite element modelling approach and validated against the experimental results. Subsequent to the validation of the model, the effect of the main parameters...

Analyzing and predicting permeability coefficient of roller-compacted concrete (RCC)

    Abstract
The permeability of roller-compacted concrete (RCC) substantially affects its functionality and safety. This study investigates the effect of mix design parameters on the performance of RCC. For this purpose, approximately 500 laboratory specimens were prepared and tested. A formula and an artificial neural network (ANN) were proposed to predict the permeability coefficient of RCC by considering the main parameters, which were then verified independently using new specimens. Furthermore, the experimental data were analyzed by the Taguchi method and analysis of variance (ANOVA) to evaluate the level of parameter contribution. Based on the results, the permeability coefficient was highly...

Multi-objective geometrical optimization of full toroidal CVT

    , Article International Journal of Automotive Technology ; Volume 14, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 707-715 ; 12299138 (ISSN) Delkhosh, M ; Saadat Foumani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The objective of this research is geometrical and kinematical optimization of full-toroidal continuously variable transmission (CVT) in order to achieve high power transmission efficiency and low mass. At first, a dynamic analysis is performed for the system. A computer model is developed to simulate elastohydrodynamic (EHL) contact between disks and roller and consequently, calculate CVT efficiency. The validity of EHL model is investigated by comparing output of this model and experimental data. Geometrical parameters are obtained by means of Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm, while the optimization objective is to maximize CVT efficiency and minimize its mass. The algorithm is run for...

Roller compacted concrete pavements reinforced with steel and polypropylene fibers

    , Article Structural Engineering and Mechanics ; Volume 40, Issue 2 , 2011 , Pages 149-165 ; 12254568 (ISSN) Madhkhan, M ; Azizkhani, R ; Torki, M. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
In this paper, the effects of both pozzolans and (steel and poly-propylene) fibers on the mechanical properties of roller compacted concrete are studied. Specimens for the experiments were made using a soil-based approach; thus, the Kango's vibration hammer was used for compaction. The tests in the first stage were carried out to determine the optimal moisture requirements for mix designs using cubic 150 × 150 × 150 mm specimens. In the tests of the second stage, the mechanical behaviors of the main specimens made using the optimal moisture obtained in the previous stage were evaluated using 28, 90, and 210 day cubic specimens. The mechanical properties of RCC pavements were evaluated using...

A novel spin-bonding process for manufacturing multilayered clad tubes

    , Article Journal of Materials Processing Technology ; Volume 210, Issue 3 , 2010 , Pages 510-517 ; 09240136 (ISSN) Mohebbi, M. S ; Akbarzadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
Utilizing the so-called tube spinning, a cold-bonding process entitled as "spin-bonding" is developed to produce seamless thin-walled clad tubes and cylinders. By this method, two layers of AA 1050 tubes were successfully bonded together to form a clad tube at room temperature. Based on mechanical aspects of the tube spinning process, the mechanism of spin-bonding is explained in two stages: surface preparation before occurrence of a stable bond and bond strengthening thereafter. The effects of process temperature, thickness reduction, feed rate and roller attack angle as the parameters of tube spinning on the bond strength are studied. It is shown that the bond strength increases by...

    Abstract
In this research a computer model based on elasto hydrodynamic fluid film lubrication is developed in order to calculate the torque transmission efficiency of a half-toroidal CVT variator. Validation of this model is verified by comparing the experimental and the model results. Sensitivity of torque transmission efficiency to eleven parameters is investigated. These parameters are: dimensionless roller curvature, aspect ratio, half cone angle, fluid viscosity index, pressure constant for Roelands model, input rotational velocity, absolute viscosity at atmospheric pressure, Young modulus of disks and power rollers, Poisson ratio of disks and power rollers, number of power rollers and variator...

    Abstract
In this research a model is developed which calculates the torque transmission efficiency of a half-toroidal CVT as a function of variator geometry, gear ratio and input torque. The different criteria which are considered to be important in a half toroidal CVT performance are torque transmission efficiency, variator weight, roller fatigue life and bearing torque loss. Variation of geometrical characteristics such as roller curvature, number of power rollers, aspect ratio and half cone angle affect these criteria in different ways. Therefore, in order to find the optimal quantity for each geometrical parameter an optimization problem should be developed. The objective function of this...
