, Article Journal of Uncertain Systems ; Vol.4, No.2, pp.123-132, 2010 Nematian, J. (Javad) ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Eshragh Jahromi, Abdolhamid ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, first a fuzzy random resource-constrained project scheduling problem is presented. The object of the problem is to find the optimal scheduling of project activities. In this model, duration of project activities is a fuzzy random variable. Then, the proposed model is formulated by using the expected value of fuzzy random variables as an IP model. An illustrative example is also provided to clarify the concept. © 2010 World Academic Press, UK. All rights reserved

, Article Computational Intelligence Methods and Applications, ICSC Congress on ; 2005 Salari, M. (Majid) ; Eshghi, Kourosh ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Ant colony optimization (ACO) is a well-known metaheuristic in which a colony of artificial ants cooperate in exploring good solutions to a combinatorial optimization problem. In this paper, an ACO algorithm is presented for the graph coloring problem. This ACO algorithm conforms to max-min ant system structure and exploits a local search heuristic to improve its performance. Experimental results on DIMACS test instances show improvements over existing ACO algorithms of the graph coloring problem

ISO's optimal strategies for scheduling the hourly demand response in day-ahead markets

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Vol. 29, issue. 6 , 2014 , p. 2636-2645 ; ISSN: 8858950 Parvania, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Shahidehpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a hierarchical demand response (DR) bidding framework in the day-ahead energy markets which integrates customer DR preferences and characteristics in the ISO's market clearing process. In the proposed framework, load aggregators submit aggregated DR offers to the ISO which would centrally optimize final decisions on aggregators' DR contributions in wholesale markets. The hourly load reduction strategies include load shifting and curtailment and the use of onsite generation and energy storage systems. The ISO applies mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) to the solution of the proposed DR model in the day-ahead market clearing problem. The proposed model is implemented...

Optimal charge scheduling of PHEV in a multi-carrier energy home

    , Article 2014 14th International Conference on Environment and Electrical Engineering, EEEIC 2014 - Conference Proceedings ; 2014 , p. 199-203 ; ISBN: 9781480000000 Rastegar, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The presence of different energy carriers as well as the advent of new multi-generation technologies such as combined heat and power (CHP) at homes necessitates designing an integrated model for optimal operation of such multi-carrier energy home. A residential energy hub model including a CHP and a Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is presented in this paper to show the multi-carrier energy system operation. In addition, this paper proposes an optimization-based formulation for PHEV charging control in the residential energy hub. The payment cost is minimized for the charge scheduling of PHEV through optimization of the residential energy hub operation in response to the...

Multiagent genetic algorithm: An online probabilistic view on economic dispatch of energy hubs constrained by wind availability

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy ; Vol. 5, issue. 2 , 2014 , p. 699-708 ; ISSN: 19493029 Moeini-Aghtaie, M ; Dehghanian, P ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Abbaspour, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Multiple energy carriers (MECs) have been broadly engrossing power system planners and operators toward a modern standpoint in power system studies. Energy hub, though playing an undeniable role as the intermediate in implementing the MECs, still needs to be put under examination in both modeling and operating concerns. Since wind power continues to be one of the fastest-growing energy resources worldwide, its intrinsic challenges should be also treated as an element of crucial role in the vision of future energy networks. In response, this paper aims to concentrate on the online economic dispatch (ED) of MECs for which it provides a probabilistic ED optimization model. The presented model...

Impacts of time-varying electricity rates on forward contract scheduling of DisCos

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery ; Vol. 29, issue. 2 , 2014 , p. 733-741 ; ISSN: 8858977 Safdarian, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Lehtonen, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Time-varying electricity rates enable demand-side potentials, which provide an opportunity for distribution companies (DisCos) to hedge against the financial risk imposed by volatile spot market prices and uncertain customers' load. In particular, time-varying rates can be effective alternatives for at least a portion of costly forward contracts. This paper establishes a stochastic framework to determine optimal forward market purchases under time-varying rates. Various electricity rating strategies with different time intervals covering flat, time-of-use, and real-time pricing schemes are considered. The objective of the framework is to maximize DisCo's expected profit while the exposure...

Comparative hourly scheduling of centralized and distributed storage in day-ahead markets

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy ; Vol. 5, issue. 3 , 2014 , p. 729-737 ; ISSN: 19493029 Parvania, M ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Shahidehpour, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Electric energy storage (EES) installations in power systems are migrating from large centralized systems to more distributed installations for microgrid applications. This trend signifies modular EES installations for the local control of buildings and processes. A centralized EES system is often dispatched by grid operators for increasing the overall efficiency and enhancing the security of power systems. The distributed EES (DEES) is locally managed by aggregators to maximize the local impact of EES, before the aggregators' adjusted load profiles are submitted to grid operators for the day-ahead scheduling. In this paper, we present and analyze two models for the hourly scheduling of...

Reliability-based maintenance scheduling of generating units in restructured power systems

    , Article Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences ; Vol. 22, issue. 5 , 2014 , p. 1147-1158 ; ISSN: 13000632 Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Aminifar, F ; Shahzadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Maintenance scheduling of generating units in restructured power systems is a collaborative and interactive process between independent system operators (ISOs) and generating companies (GENCOs). The ISO should comply with GENCO maintenance preferences subject to targeted system reliability levels. This process might be multistage since the admission of all initial unit outage requests may threaten system reliability. Hence, the ISO accepts some proposals and determines alternatives for the remaining units. The GENCOs are then allowed to confirm the alternatives or revise them. In this paper the ISO problem of generating unit maintenance scheduling is tackled. The objective function is to...

Optimized midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduling of thermal generating units

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Vol. 27, issue. 3 , 2012 , p. 1354-1365 ; ISSN: 08858950 Abiri-Jahromi, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Parvania, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper addresses the midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduling problem of thermal generating units which is becoming increasingly important due to the aging of power generation fleet. In this context, a novel midterm preventive maintenance outage scheduler is proposed based on decision tree and mixed integer linear formation which explicitly considers the thermal units aging momentum in terms of failure rate. This allows the system operators to determine the thermal units' maintenance outage window based on the cost/benefit analysis of preventive maintenance tasks while optimizing the time interval between consecutive maintenance tasks. Additionally, the division of the year-long...

    , Article IEEE Systems Journal ; Vol. 6, issue. 4 , 2012 , p. 593-602 ; ISSN: 19328184 Dehghanian, P ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Bagheri-Shouraki, S ; Razi Kazemi, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Confronted with the power system restructuring trend reforming the past-regulated power systems, the need for a narrower insight on the costly maintenance strategies seems imperative. It falls within the realm of reliability centered maintenance to enhance the cost effectiveness of power distribution maintenance policies. From a practical point of view, this paper devises a novel approach on the basis of the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) accompanied by fuzzy sets theory to determine the most critical component types of distribution power systems to be prioritized in maintenance scheduling. In the presence of many qualitative and quantitative attributes, fuzzy sets can effectively...

Impacts of controlled and uncontrolled PHEV charging on distribution systems

    , Article IET Conference Publications ; Vol. 2012, issue. 616 CP , 2012 ; 9781850000000 Shafiee, S ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Rastegar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) technology provides one of the most promising solutions to tackle the threatening challenges such as air pollution in urban areas. Dramatic increases in the number of PHEVs could have major impacts on power system operations because of their high electricity demand. From the distribution system operator facet, distribution system congestion during PHEVs charging is an economic and security concern. It is, therefore, necessary to investigate the effects of widespread using of PHEVs on the performance of distribution networks. In this paper, PHEV characteristics are exactly studied and a comprehensive model for investigation of PHEV impacts is achieved....

Resource placement in Cartesian product of networks

    , Article Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing ; Vol. 70, issue. 5 , May , 2010 , p. 481-495 ; ISSN: 7437315 Imani, N ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Zomaya, A.Y ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The utilization of the limited resources of a multiprocessor or multicomputer system is a primary performance issue which is crucial for the design of many scheduling algorithms. While many of the existing parallel machines benefit from a regular product network topology, almost none of the previous resource placement techniques have come to recognize and exploit this inherent regularity. This paper introduces several novel algorithms for deriving resource placement schemes in product networks based on the assumption of perfect resource placement in their underling basic graphs. Our techniques use known schemes for the basic networks as their building blocks for deploying the resource...

Suppression of harmonic perturbations and bifurcation control in tracking objectives of a boiler-turbine unit in power grid

    , Article Nonlinear Dynamics ; Vol. 76, Issue. 3 , 2014 , pp. 1693-1709 ; ISSN: 0924090X Moradi, H ; Vossoughi, G ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In the presence of harmonic disturbances, boiler-turbine units may demonstrate quasi-periodic behaviour due to the occurrence of various types of bifurcation. In this article, a nonlinear model of boiler-turbine unit is considered in which drum pressure, electric output and drum water level are controlled via manipulation of valve positions for fuel, steam and feed-water flow rates. For bifurcation control in tracking problem, two controllers are designed based on gain scheduling and feedback linearization (FBL). To investigate the efficiency of control strategies, three cases are considered for desired tracking objectives (a sequence of steps, ramps/steps, and a combination of them)....

Minimizing total completion time in the flexible flowshop sequence-dependent group scheduling problem

    , Article Annals of Operations Research ; Volume 226, Issue 1 , March , 2014 , pp. 351-377 ; ISSN: 02545330 Keshavarz, T ; Salmasi, N ; Varmazyar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This research considers a flexible flowshop sequence-dependent group scheduling problem with minimization of total completion time. A mixed integer linear mathematical model for the research problem is developed. Since the research problem is shown to be strongly NP-hard, a metaheuristic algorithm based on memetic algorithm (MA) is proposed. A lower bounding method based on the Branch and Price algorithm is also proposed to evaluate the quality of the MA. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms, random test problems, ranging in size from small, medium, to large are generated and solved by the MA and the lower bounding method. The results show that the average...

    , Article International Journal of Production Research ; Vol. 52, issue. 9 , Feb , 2014 , pp. 2767-2787 ; ISSN: 00207543 Nedaei, H ; Mahlooji, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This research studies multi-objective master production schedule (MPS) and advanced order commitment (AOC) in two-stage supply chains. Simulation-based experimental analysis evaluates the impact of environmental and MPS design factors on schedule cost and instability. The results provide insight into multi-objective MPS design considerations through rolling schedule policies. The study reveals that the manufacturers production smoothness utility coefficient and its interaction with other experimental factors considerably impact on the systems performance. In addition, it introduces a simulation framework with embedded mixed integer programming models that could be used as a framework for...

Heuristic rules for tardiness problem in flow shop with intermediate due dates

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Vol. 71, issue. 1-4 , 2014 , pp. 381-393 ; ISSN: 02683768 Ghassemi Tari, F ; Olfat, L ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the tardiness flow shop models with intermediate due date were considered. The flow shop models consist of a set of jobs each having a number of operations, while each operation is performed in a single machine. All the jobs are considered having the same unidirectional precedence order. In the tardiness flow shop models with intermediate due date, which we call the generalized tardiness flow shop models, there exist a due date associated with the completion of each operation, and we want to find a schedule which minimizes the total tardiness of the jobs. This is a more general version of tardiness flow shop in the sense that, by assigning a large value to each of the...

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Vol. 70, issue. 9-12 , 2014 , pp. 2125-2137 ; ISSN: 02683768 Rafiee, M ; Kianfar, F ; Farhadkhani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the joint problem of project selection and project scheduling under uncertain environment is formulated, analyzed, and solved by multistage stochastic programs. First of all, a general mathematical formulation which can address several versions of the problem is presented. A multi-period project selection and scheduling problem is introduced and modeled by multistage stochastic programs, which are effective for solving long-term planning problems under uncertainty. A set of scenarios and corresponding probabilities is applied to model the multivariate random data process (costs or revenues, available budget, chance of success). Then, due to computational complexity, a scenario...

Solving a new mixed integer non-linear programming model of the multi-skilled project scheduling problem considering learning and forgetting effect on the employee efficiency

    , Article IEEE International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management ; 18 November , 2014 , Pages 400-404 ; ISSN: 21573611 ; ISBN: 9781479909865 Mehmanchi, E ; Shadrokh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a new mathematical programming model to tackle the multi-skilled project scheduling problem. Considering the effect of learning and forgetting on the human skills, an exponential learning function has been developed by assuming the efficiency of employees performing activities to be dynamic. Taking the nonlinearity of the function into account, we use separable programming to acquire an appropriate linear approximation for it. Moreover, the proposed model allows us to relax some of the binary variables linearly without any modifications. At the end, the final model is tested with some instances and is solved by CPLEX in order to confirm the implemented...

A traffic-aware scheduling algorithm for IEEE 802.16 mesh mode

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, issue. 3 , 2014 , pp. 803-814 ; ISSN: 1026-3098 Dabiran, F ; Rabiee, H. R ; Salehi, M ; Amidian, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Since there is no difference etween uplink and downlink subframes in the IEEE 802.16 mesh mode; both downlink and uplink traffics are transmitted within a single time frame. Hence, in most scheduling methods, only one scheduling algorithm is used for both uplink and downlink traffic. However, because of the different characteristics of uplink and downlink traffic, different scheduling methods should be used for each of the traffic types. In this paper, we focus on the mesh centralized scheduling of downlink flow in the data subframe. After comprehensive analysis of the characteristics of downlink traffic, we propose a new algorithm, called Traffic-Aware Scheduling (TAS). In this algorithm,...

    , Article International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Vol. 70, Issue. 1-4 , January , 2014 , pp. 501-514 ; ISSN: 02683768 Nejati, M ; Mahdavi, I ; Hassanzadeh, R ; Mahdavi-Amiri, N ; Mojarad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Lot streaming means breaking a lot into sublots, where sublots may be transferred to a number of machines for the operations. Here, the multi-job lot streaming problem in a multistage hybrid flow shop having identical parallel machines at stages with work-in-process (WIP) jobs, work shifts constraint, and sequence-dependent setup times is studied. The aim is to minimize the sum of weighted completion times of jobs in each shift in order to furnish a better machine utilization for the following shifts. Our model in meeting the job demands appropriates job scheduling onmachines for processing, the sequence of operations on allocated machines, the size of the sublots in the work shifts, the...
