, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Monadi Noori, Saber (Author) ; Taghavinia, Nima (Supervisor)
    Abstract
“Progress” is among most frequently used terms in the past few centuries in public discussions, scientific communities as well as economic and sociopolitical policy making. This term has been used in our daily conversations so frequently that it seems to become an intrinsic goal for human beings. However, even a short survey of the introduced meanings of and suggested approaches to achieve “progress” during the last four centuries - since the term was first used- demonstrates that we are faced with a multitude of views from the different - and sometimes contradictory - schools of thoughts. Unfortunately, in recent decades, despite our national desire to “progress”, we have not yet thought...

If the achievements of these schools are positive, it can be expanded as a supportive policy for low-income families in order to raise the educational skills of deprived students. This study conducted on the basis of data from an internet-based survey, in which 130,000 volunteers, which were enrolled in the National university entrance examinations in 1389, answered the questionnaire. By using the propensity score matching method, assumed that the unobservable variables for the two groups, one is enrolled in a special school and the other is enrolled...

A New Model for School Bus Routing Problem by Considering Traffic Constraint

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gaeeni, Ali (Author) ; Kianfar, Farhad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Today with the development of big cities and also increase in the population, the problem of school routing problem and drivers rout is in essential importance. In this research first literature review is completed on the subject of routing problems to find research gaps, and then a model and algorithm based on time and traffic will be presented. It has to be noticed that, we consider assumption to simulate the real-world problem. In the second phase of research all of the model components will be introduced, and then we will solve the short version of the problem with GAMS exact algorithms. Solution based on GAMS also will be presented at the end of this phase, and the results will be...

The Effects of Expansion of Higher Education on the Educational Discrimination in Iran

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mahdipour, Mojtaba (Author) ; Vesal, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Emphasis on the expansion of education in Iran's development strategy and increasing demand for higher education in the 2000s required the country to develop higher educational institutes. Unprecedented growth of these institutes in the second half of 2000s was so vast that in 2008 all the counties in Iran had at least one institute. These institutes were established even in the smallest counties in order to solve the problem of transportation for its settlers, and on the other hand, developing higher education institutes in larger cities resulted in an increase in the acceptance rate of these institutes and their accessibility for the people. Moreover, lower accessibility to higher...

    Abstract
This thesis aims to assess the seismic risk of the community of schools with masonry buildings in the Tehran metropolitan in the next 50 years and to prioritize the buildings of this community for seismic retrofit based on the optimal mitigation of risk of the community. Tehran is among the largest cities with the highest level of seismic risk in the world, and Masonry buildings are among the structures with poor seismic performance; Therefore, it is essential to conduct a comprehensive and accurate evaluation of the seismic risk of schools, as one of the most critical and sensitive occupancies, in this region and with this type of structure. It is also very beneficial to reduce the seismic...

The “Context of Discovery” of Scientific Theories: A Study of the Logic Behind it By Focusing on the Marburg School

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taskhiri, Mohammad Hossein (Author) ; Akbari Takhtameshlou, Javad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
All the main knowledge currents —from the humanities to the experimental sciences— consider themselves explicitly or implicitly indebted to Neo-Kantianism, an approach that, by removing the sensory-material component from the production of reality, prevented the entry of all accidental and unexpected elements into the various fields of human knowledge and gave a not very productive peace to the European world: the peace that came to Europe not only in experimental sciences but also in politics and economy, but it made the existence of Europe weak and sterile. This is the judgment that I have tried to make as far as I can to show what fate the acceptance of Neo-Kantianism brings to man. The...

    Abstract
Governments in developing countries have invested in institutions of higher learning in order to develop homegrown, high technology products. Among these, the National University of Malaysia (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), recognized as a Research University, is actively involved in projects related to medical technology through its various faculties. The net result of these activities is impressing from the point of view of patents and publications, but unfortunately not yet in terms of commercialization. This paper starts by presenting the main obstacles towards the objective of bringing a laboratory prototype to the market in the context of Malaysia. Then, a framework is presented...

    Abstract
In the present work, we investigated the characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metal(loid)s in indoor/outdoor PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 in a retirement home and a school dormitory in Tehran from May 2012 to May 2013. The results indicated that the annual levels of indoor and outdoor PM10 and PM2.5 were much higher than the guidelines issued by the World Health Organization (WHO). The most abundant detected metal(loid)s in PM were Si, Fe, Zn, Al, and Pb. We found higher percentages of metal(loid)s in smaller size fractions of PM. Additionally, the results showed that the total PAHs (ΣPAHs) bound to PM were...

Promoting active transportation modes in school trips

    , Article Transport Policy ; Volume 37 , January , 2015 , Pages 203-211 ; 0967070X (ISSN) Ermagun, A ; Samimi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2015
    Abstract
Urban and transportation planners have put a special focus on students' health and fitness in the past decade, however they struggle to find effective policies to promote walking and biking for school trips. Commuting to school is an opportunity to embed a regular physical activity in students' daily routines and prevent many health issues that are stimulated by physical inactivity during childhood. A three level nested logit model is introduced to explain the motives behind school trip modal selection. Four choice situations, namely walking, driving, school busing, and taking public transit are considered. This study, particularly, underscored the significance of model misspecification in...

A joint model for mode choice and escort decisions of school trips

    , Article Transportmetrica A: Transport Science ; Volume 11, Issue 3 , Nov , 2015 , Pages 270-289 ; 23249935 (ISSN) Ermagun, A ; Hossein Rashidi, T ; Samimi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Taylor and Francis Ltd  2015
    Abstract
A considerable shift has occurred in mode choice behaviour and escort pattern of students for their school trips around the world during the last few decades. This shift towards using more non-active modes has undesirable consequences, including physical inactivity among students, traffic jams during peak hours, and adverse environmental impacts. Hence, understanding the behaviour of decision-makers with regard to the mode choice and escorting pattern selection is crucial for controlling the trend of the shift and promoting active modes. This study is the first effort to mathematically model the mode choice and accompaniment pattern selection by parents for the school trip of students, in a...

In the past few years, Iranian universities have embarked to use e-learning tools and technologies to extend and improve their educational services. After a few years of conducting e-learning programs a debate took place within the executives and managers of the e-learning institutes concerning which activities are of the most influence on the learning progress of online students. This research is aimed to investigate the impact of a number of e-learning activities on the students' learning development. The results show that participation in virtual classroom sessions has the most substantial impact on the students' final grades. This paper presents the process of applying data mining...
