    Solvent polarity and hydrogen bond effects on nucleophilic substitution reaction of 2-bromo-5-nitrothiophene with piperidine

    Abstract
    The reaction kinetics of 2-bromo-5-nitro thiophene with piperidine was studied in a solvent with a mixture of propan-2-ol with methanol and n-hexane at 25°C. The measured rate coefficients of the reaction demonstrated dramatic variations in propan-2-ol–n-hexane mixtures and mild variations in propan-2-ol–methanol system. The second-order rate coefficients of the reaction, kA, decreased sharply with n-hexane content. The multiparameter correlation of log kA versus molecular-microscopic solvent parameters shows interesting results in these solutions.     Abstract
    In this paper, we provide a simple framework for deriving one-shot achievable bounds for some problems in quantum information theory. Our framework is based on the joint convexity of the exponential of the collision relative entropy and is a (partial) quantum generalization of the technique of Yassaee et al. from classical information theory. Based on this framework, we derive one-shot achievable bounds for the problems of communication over classical-quantum channels, quantum hypothesis testing, and classical data compression with quantum side information.     This paper presents a state of the art review of adsorption models for a new plant-based surfactant adsorption onto sandstone minerals. The adsorption data at both kinetic and equilibrium modes were obtained from batch experiments. Four adsorption kinetic models, five two-parameter, and six three-parameter equilibrium models were used for interpretation of the obtained data. Among the two and three-parameter isotherm models applied, the Jovanovic and the Khan isotherms showed the best fit, respectively.     Removal of zirconium from its dilute aqueous solution using Aspergillus niger as a dried and living biomass was investigated. Through that, the effect of some operational parameters on biosorption, including pH, temperature, contact time, initial concentration of zirconium and dose of biomass, were studied. Based on the results, it was concluded that the uptake of zirconium by both dried and living biomasses is pH dependent, and maximum uptake was observed in pH = 3.1 for both biomasses.     In this paper, we derive a theoretical model for the higher-order four-wave mixing (FWM) power in wavelength division multiplexing networks with non-zero dispersion shifted fibers for the first time. We have investigated the higher-order FWM power theoretically and by numerical simulations. Dividing the fiber into a finite number of elements and applying the boundary conditions allow us to derive an expression for the second-order power penalty. At the end of each element, we derive the first-order FWM power for all wavelengths and use these values to calculate the second-order FWM power in the next element.     In this paper, we propose and analyze flocking algorithms in a network of second-order agents with bounded control inputs and nonlinear intrinsic dynamics. We consider a general switching network topology, for velocity information exchange, rather than undirected or fixed directed network topology with a directed spanning tree. The proposed adaptive controller architecture applies a leader-following strategy in which the pinning scheme is defined based on the interaction topology.     Reliability methods are employed in this paper to analyze the seismic risk to the Vancouver metropolitan region in Canada. The use of reliability methods contrasts with several contemporary approaches for risk analysis. In this paper, two analysis approaches are presented and implemented in a new computer program. One utilizes the first-order and second-order reliability methods together with a hazard combination technique.     The objective of this work is to create an analytical framework to study the static pull-in and also equilibrium behavior in electrostatically actuated torsional micromirrors. First the equation governing the static behavior of electrostatic torsion micromirrors is derived and normalized. Perturbation method, the method of straight forward expansion is utilized to find the pull-in angle of the mirror.     Abstract
    We investigate numerically the effect of long-range interaction on the transverse localization of light. To this end, nonlinear zigzag optical waveguide lattices are applied, which allows precise tuning of the second-order coupling. We find that localization is hindered by coupling between next-nearest lattice sites. Additionally, (focusing) nonlinearity facilitates localization with increasing disorder, as long as the nonlinearity is sufficiently weak. However, for strong nonlinearities, increasing disorder results in weaker localization. The threshold nonlinearity, above which this anomalous result is observed, grows with increasing second-order coupling

    Surrounding soil can drastically influence the dynamic response of buildings during strong ground shaking. Soil's flexibility decreases the natural frequencies of the system; and in most cases, soil provides additional damping due to material hysteresis and radiation.
