    Abstract
Controlling evaporation plays an essential role in arid and semi-arid water resources systems where it accounts for a considerable amount of reservoirs outflow. In this study, we have evaluated evaporation reduction efficiency of different kinds of self-assembled nano-thickness films. The films consist of six different combinations of stearyl and cetyl alcohols with additives such as jojoba oil, stearic acid, and calcium hydroxide. The study lasted from July to August and utilized two pairs of class A evaporation pans: one pair was semi-floating on Chitgar lake water surface while the other one was located on the shore. The experimental results showed that a monolayer containing 3:1 stearyl...

    Abstract
We report on charge transport across self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of short tau peptides by probing the electron tunneling rates and quantum mechanical simulation. We measured the electron tunneling rates across SAMs of carboxyl-terminated linker molecules (C6H12O2S) and short cis-tau (CT) and trans-tau (TT) peptides, supported on template-stripped gold (AuTS) bottom electrode, with Eutectic Gallium-Indium (EGaIn)(EGaIn) top electrode. Measurements of the current density across thousands of AuTS/linker/tau//Ga2O3/EGaIn single-molecule junctions show that the tunneling current across CT peptide is one order of magnitude lower than that of TT peptide. Quantum mechanical simulation...

    Abstract
In this article, the synthesis, characterization, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements are reported for ferrocene-terminated oligophenyleneimine (OPI_Fc) and ferrocene-terminated conjugation-broken oligophenyleneimine (CB-OPI_Fc) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) in two different electrolytes, namely, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium-bis (trifluoromethyl-sulfonyl) imide (EMITFSI) ionic liquid and tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (Bu4NPF6) in acetonitrile (0.1 M solution). The SAMs were synthesized on Au surfaces by the sequential imine condensation reactions. CV was used to investigate the kinetics of electron transfer (ET) to the ferrocene, and it was observed that the standard ET rate...

Specific picomolar detection of a breast cancer biomarker her-2/neu protein in serum: electrocatalytically amplified electroanalysis by the aptamer/peg-modified electrode

    Abstract
Specific and sensitive electroanalysis of blood-circulating protein cancer biomarkers is often complicated by interference from serum proteins nonspecifically adsorbing at the biosensing interface and masking specific reactions of interest. Here, we have developed an electrocatalytically amplified assay for specific and sensitive analysis of human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER-2/neu, a protein cancer biomarker over-expressed in breast cancers) that allows us to avoid both the interference from bovine serum albumin (BSA) and electrocatalytic amplification of the signal stemming from the specific aptamer−HER-2/neu binding. A HER-2/neu-specific thiolated aptamer sequence was...

    , Article Analytical Methods ; Volume 5, Issue 24 , 2013 , Pages 7096-7101 ; 17599660 (ISSN) Bagheri, H ; Piri-Moghadam, H ; Bayat, P ; Balalaie, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A molecularly imprinted xerogel (MIX) for fentanyl was successfully prepared on the inner surface of a copper tube by sol-gel technology. Primarily, the tube was treated by self-assembly monolayers of 3-(mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane and then [3-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)-propyl]-trimethoxysilane was employed as a precursor for imprinting the template molecule in acidic conditions. During the sol-gel process influential parameters including volume and concentration of fentanyl were carefully investigated to obtain the most efficient and appropriate xerogel. In parallel, a non-imprinted xerogel (NIX) was synthesized in the absence of fentanyl. The extraction efficiencies achieved from MIX and NIX,...

    Abstract
To evaluate the selectivity and efficiency of solid phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coatings, synthesized by sol-gel technology, roles of precursors and coating polymers were extensively investigated. An on-line combination of capillary microextraction (CME) technique and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was set up to perform the investigation. Ten different fiber coatings were synthesized in which five of them contained only the precursor and the rests were prepared using both the precursor and coating polymer. All the coatings were chemically bonded to the inner surface of copper tubes, intended to be used as the CME device and already functionalized by self-assembly...

    Abstract
A new technique is introduced for preparation of an unbreakable fiber using gold wire as a substrate for solid phase microextraction (SPME). A gold wire is used as a solid support, onto which a first film is deposited that consists of a two-dimensional polymer obtained by hydrolysis of a self-assembled monolayer of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)-1-propanthiol. This first film is covered with a layer of 3-(triethoxysilyl)-propylamine. Next, a stationary phase of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes was chemically bound to the surface. The synthetic strategy was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Thermal stability of new fiber was examined by...

    Abstract
In this work a novel unbreakable sol-gel-based in-tube device for on-line solid phase microextraction (SPME) was developed. The inner surface of a copper tube, intended to be used as a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) loop, was electrodeposited by metallic Cu followed by the self assembled monolayers (SAM) of 3-(mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (3MPTMOS). Then, poly (ethyleneglycol) (PEG) was chemically bonded to the -OH sites of the SAM already covering the inner surface of the copper loop using sol-gel technology. The homogeneity and the porous surface structure of the SAM and sol-gel coatings were examined using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and adsorption/desorption...

    Abstract
LM13 alloy is widely used in piston industry, due to its low coefficient of thermal expansion, excellent castability and hot tear resistance. In this research effect of casting process on wear behavior of LM13 alloy was investigated. First, samples were produced using two casting processes and heat treated. Then wear behavior of these samples under dry sliding condition was examined. Results of hardness and strength tests indicated that squeeze cast specimens exhibited higher mechanical properties. Wear experiment results showed that in both squeeze and gravity cast specimens, amount of weight loss increases with increase in sliding distance which is accompanied by reduction in wear rate and...

    Abstract
The voltammetric behavior of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) on a gold electrode modified with self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of cysteamine (CA) conjugated with functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was investigated. The film modifier of functionalized SAM was characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and also, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) using para-hydroquinone (PHQ) as a redox probe. For the binary mixture of DA and UA, the voltammetric signals of these two compounds can be well separated from each other, allowing simultaneous determination of DA and UA. The effect of various experimental parameters on the voltammetric responses of DA and...

    Abstract
Scattering particles constitute a key light trapping solution for thin film photovoltaics where either the particles are embedded in the light absorbing layer or a thick layer of them is used as a reflector. Here we introduce a monolayer of wavelength-scale core-shell silica@Ag particles as a novel light trapping strategy for thin film photovoltaics. These particles show hybrid photonic-plasmonic resonance modes that scatter light strongly and with small parasitic absorption losses in Ag (<1.5%). In addition, their scattering efficiency does not vary significantly with the refractive index of the surrounding medium. A monolayer of these particles is applied as the top-scattering layers in a...
