, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hasanian, Mostafa (Author) ; Ahmadiyan, Mohammad Taghi (Supervisor) ; Firoozbakhsh, Keikhosrow (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Red Blood Cells (RBCs) are the main cells in human blood with a main role in mechanical properties of blood as a fluid. Several methods are developed to simulate the behavior of RBCs motion and deformation in micro-capillaries. Since in microscopic scales, using discrete models are more preferred than continuum methods, moving particle semi-implicit method (MPS) which is one of the recent innovative particle based methods, can simulate micro-fluidic flows based on Navier-Stocks equations. Although by the recent developments MPS method has turned into a considerable tool for modeling blood flow in micro-scales, but still some problems, such as commitment to use small time steps, restrict the...

    , Article International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping ; Volume 98 , October , 2012 , Pages 30-42 ; 03080161 (ISSN) Niroomandi, A ; Borghei, S. M ; Bohluly, A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper Time Splitting Projection Method (TSPM) has been implemented to model transient flow in a deformable pipe. In addition a quasi-steady model and the Brunone unsteady model have been incorporated into the algorithm to consider the effect of static and dynamic friction on the shape and attenuation of pressure waves. The deformation of the cross section of the pipe due to the change of pressure has been considered using Hooke's Law of elasticity. Numerical results of the model have been compared with a simple analytical test and results of experimental measurements for water hammer problem with different Reynolds numbers in a simple pipeline system; besides, numerical stability...

Simulation of Red Blood Cell mechanical behavior in optical tweezers experiment based on a particle method

    , Article ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings (IMECE), 12 November 2010 through 18 November 2010 ; Volume 2 , 2010 , Pages 325-329 ; 9780791844267 (ISBN) Ahmadian, M. T ; Firoozbakhsh, K ; Hasanian, M
    Abstract
Optical tweezers provide an accurate measurement technique for evaluating mechanical properties of the living cells and many experimental studies have been done to understand the behavior of cells due to external forces. Numerical studies such as finite element methods have been used in order to simulate mechanical behavior of the Red Blood Cells (RBCs). Recent studies have shown that the particle methods are useful tools to simulate the mechanical behavior of living cells. Since in microscopic scales, using discrete models are preferred than continuum methods, a particle-based method is used to simulate the deformation of RBC which is stretched by optical tweezers. The cytoplasm of RBC is...

Correlation for Nusselt number in pure magnetic convection ferrofluid flow in a square cavity by a numerical investigation

    , Article Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials ; Volume 322, Issue 22 , November , 2010 , Pages 3607-3613 ; 03048853 (ISSN) Ashouri, M ; Ebrahimi, B ; Shafii, M. B ; Saidi, M. H ; Saidi, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Magnetic convection heat transfer in a two-dimensional square cavity induced by magnetic field gradient is investigated numerically using a semi-implicit finite volume method. The side walls of the cavity are heated with different temperatures, the top and bottom walls are isolated, and a permanent magnet is located near the bottom wall. Thermal buoyancy-induced flow is neglected due to the nongravity condition on the plane of the cavity. Conditions for the different values of non-dimensional variables in a variety of ferrofluid properties and magnetic field parameters are studied. Based on this numerical analysis, a general correlation for the overall Nusselt number on the side walls is...

    Abstract
The first notable megawatt class wind turbine, which was the pioneer of improvement in the blade performance in large wind turbines, appeared in Vermont. Nowadays, modern wind turbines are using blades with multi-airfoils at different sections. In this study, in order to indicate the best airfoil profile for the optimum performance in different sections of a blade, five popular airfoils, including S8xx, FFA and AH series, were studied. On the large-scale profile, shear stress transport K–ω model was applied for the simulation of horizontal axis wind turbines for different wind speeds. The aerodynamic simulation was accomplished using computational fluid dynamic method, which in turn is based...

Numerical calculation of turbulent reacting flow in a model gas-turbine combustor

    , Article 41st AIAA Thermophysics Conference, 22 June 2009 through 25 June 2009 ; 2009 ; 9781563479755 (ISBN) Darbandi, M ; Ghafourizadeh, M ; Schneider, G. E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this work, an efficient bi-implicit strategy is suitably developed within the context of a hybrid finite volume element method to solve axisymmetric turbulent reactive flow in a model gas turbine combustor. Based on the essence of a control-volume-based finite-element method, the formulation benefits from the geometrical flexibility of the finite element methods while the discrete algebraic governing equations are derived through applying the conservation laws to discrete cells distributed in the solution domain. To enhance the efficiency of method, we extend the physical influence upwinding scheme to cylindrical coordinates. This extension helps to improve the advection flux...

    Abstract
In this paper, a mesh-less numerical approach is utilized to solve Euler's equation that is the governing equation of the irrotational flow of ideal fluids. A fractional step method of discritization is applied which consists to split each time step in two steps. This numerical method is based on moving-particle semi-implicit method (MPS) for simulating incompressible inviscid flows with free surfaces. The motion of each particle is calculated through interactions with neighboring particles covered with the kernel function. There are limitations for getting a stable solution by MPS method. In this paper, various kernel functions are considered and applied to improve the stability of MPS...
