    Optimum receiver design for transmitted-reference signaling [electronic resource]

    Abstract
    Autocorrelation receiver (AcR) is usually used as the general receiver for transmitted reference (TR) communication systems on a quite intuitive basis. In this paper, we apply the principle of statistical invariance to obtain the optimum TR receiver on a decision-theoretic basis, and it is shown that the autocorrelation receiver is optimal only in a special case. Performance of the optimum receiver and the suboptimum AcR for some important modulation schemes is also evaluated. The results imply that allocating a part of the transmitted energy and bandwidth to reference pulses would not help improve the performance of the system and the optimal performance might be achieved via much simpler...

    Paenibacillus polymyxa ATCC 21830 was used for the production of curdlan gum for first time. A Box-Behnken experimental design was applied to optimize six variables of batch fermentation culture each at three levels. Statistical analyses were employed to investigate the direct and interactive effects of variables on curdlan production.     Background: Biodegradation of free cyanide from industrial wastewaters has been proven as a viable and robust method for treatment of wastewaters containing cyanide. Results: Cyanide degrading bacteria were isolated from a wastewater treatment plant for coke-oven-gas condensate by enrichment culture technique. Five strains were able to use cyanide as the sole nitrogen source under alkaline conditions and among them; one strain (C2) was selected for further studies on the basis of the higher efficiency of cyanide degradation.     This study presents a novel method for fault location of transmission lines by multiple fault current measurements. In contrast to conventional methods, it is proposed to utilise several current measurements, which may be far from the faulted line. The circuit equations of the network are used to express each fault current as a function of fault location. Fault location is then estimated using a least-squares estimation technique. To achieve a robust estimation of fault location, statistical hypotheses-testing is employed for identifying erroneous measurements.     Abnormalities in the topology of brain networks may be an important feature and etiological factor for psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES). To explore this possibility, we applied a graph theoretical approach to functional networks based on resting state EEGs from 13 PNES patients and 13 age- and gender-matched controls.     In this article, we examine Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and the concept of Mutual information (MI) as a quantitative measure of independence from the point of view of analytical chemistry. We compare results obtained by different ICA methods with results obtained by Multivariate Curve Resolution Alternating Least Squares (MCR-ALS). These results have shown that, when non-negativity constraints are applied, values of MI increase considerably and the resolved components cannot anymore be considered to be independent (i.e. they can only be considered to be the " least dependent" components).     Experiments are performed to evaluate the impact of trip wires on the turbulence intensity in a few low speed wind tunnels. Trip wires of different sizes are installed at different positions in the contraction section of four different wind tunnels and measurements are made at various free stream velocities. The results indicate that the pressure distributions are altered compared to the clean condition. Trip wires move the adverse pressure gradient toward the inlet of the contraction section.
