Characterization of Mechanical Properties of Polymer Nanocomposites with Spherical Inhomogeneities

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Goudarzi, Taha (Author) ; Naghdabadi, Reza (Supervisor) ; Bagheri, Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The improved properties of nanocomposites are not achievable with conventional composites. Scale effect is one the most important parameters in the physical and mechanical properties of polymeric nanocomposites. One of the physical phenomena, which can be related to the scale effect, is the very large interface between the nanoparticles and the polymeric matrices. Motional behavior and conformation of polymeric chains change near the nanoparticles surfaces. Due to high interface of the nanoparticles with the polymeric matrices the amount of these types of changes in the polymeric chains are so large that can change the physical and mechanical properties of polymeric nanocomposites. In this...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Lotfian, Kimia (Author) ; Mohammadi Shoja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The investigation of interface residual stress and interface elastic moduli tensors plays a crucial role in enhancing the conventional theory of elasticity. These considerations allow us to account for size effects and eliminate nonphysical singularities near defects. The primary objective of this study is to comprehensively calculate interface energy, residual stress components, and interface elastic moduli tensors for various interfaces between non-magnetic fcc metals using density functional theory (DFT). We achieve this by performing ab initio DFT calculations to determine the interface energies for different coherent interfaces among these metals. Subsequently, these energies are...

    Abstract
Excellent mechanical properties and high aspect ratio of carbon nanotubes have been the reason for extensive research on nanocomposites reinforced by this nanostructure, and recently metal matrix type of these nanocomposites, due to their advantages, have received great attention. Mode III dynamic stress intensity factor at the crack tip, crack face and crack mouth opening displacements, the reflection coefficient at large distances from the crack face, and the stress field on the interface are computed and plotted for different valued of...

Surface/Interface Effects on The Scattering of In-Plane Elastic Waves by a Multi-Coated Nanofiber

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Taheri Jam, Masoud (Author) ; Mohammadi Shodja, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the framework of surface elasticity theory, the scattering of in-plane elastic waves by a multicoated nanofiber embedded in an elastic matrix is studied. Atoms near an interface experience a local environment different from it within the bulk. Going from macro to nano dimensions, surface to volume ratio increases significantly. Thus, on this scale it is important to consider the surface/interface properties as well as the bulk properties. In this dissertation, the surface/interface is modeled by a very thin layer in which the traction and displacement are discontinuous. Effects of surface/interface parameters on the dynamic stress concentration factor (DSCF) and scattering cross section...

    Abstract
Recent studies have shown that the surface/interface free energy plays an important role in the effective mechanical properties of solids with nanosized inhomogeneity. In the present study, an analytical model is developed for 3D axisymmetric analysis of short fiber nanocomposites including the fiber end region, subjected to an applied axial load considering surface effects. Closed form expressions are obtained for 3D stress filed in the fiber and matrix. Moreover, performing numerical examples, it is shown that the elastic stress field is size dependent in both the fiber and matrix especially for fiber radii less than 50 nm

    Abstract
The effect of surface and interface elasticity in the analysis of the Saint-Venant torsion problem of an eccentrically two-phase fcc circular nanorod is considered; description of the behavior of such a small structure via usual classical theories cease to hold. In this work, the problem is formulated in the context of the surface/interface elasticity. For a rigorous solution of the proposed problem, conformal mapping with a Laurent series expansion are employed together. The numerical results well illustrate that the torsional rigidity and stress distribution corresponding to such nanosized structural elements are significantly affected by the size. In order to employ surface and interface...

    Abstract
Behavior of nanostructures, which are characterized by a large surface-to-volume ratio, is greatly influenced by their surface parameters, such as surface elastic moduli tensor. Accurate determination of the surface elastic constants by first principles is of particular interest. To this end, through consideration of the fundamental thermodynamic arguments for free solid surfaces, an analytical formulation for the change in specific Helmholtz surface free energy is developed. Relating this formulation to the corresponding energy calculated via first principles leads to the determination of the surface elastic moduli tensor. The surface mechanical properties, namely surface energy, surface...

    Abstract
Surface/interface stresses, when notable, are closely associated with a surface/interface layer in which the interatomic bond lengths and charge density distribution differ remarkably from those of the bulk. The presence of such topographical defects as edges and corners amplifies the noted phenomena by large amounts. If the principal features of interest are such studies as the physics and mechanics of evolving microscopic-/nanoscopic-interfaces and the behavior of nano-sized structures which have a very large surface-to-volume ratio, traditional continuum theories cease to hold. It is for the treatment of such problems that augmented continuum approaches like second strain gradient and...

    , Article Thin Solid Films ; Volume 626 , 2017 , Pages 104-109 ; 00406090 (ISSN) Nejat Pishkenari, H ; Rezaei, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Mechanical properties of materials are an important factor in designing nanoscale systems. Several researches and experiments have shown that the mechanical properties of the nano-scale materials are different from those of bulk. One of the major reasons for this difference is that the ratio of surface to volume increases at the nano-scale, and the effects of free surfaces become very important. In this paper, we have measured the surface elastic constants of silicon crystalline structure using different interatomic potentials. The potentials employed here are EDIP (Environment-Dependent Interatomic Potential), Stillinger-Weber and Tersoff, and also different crystalline orientations are...

    Abstract
Mechanical properties of a material near the surfaces and interfaces are different from those of the same material far from the surfaces/interfaces. The effect of this difference on the effective mechanical properties of heterogeneous materials becomes significant when the size of inhomogeneities is at the scale of nanometers. In this article, within a micromechanical framework, the effects of surface residual stress and surface elasticity are taken into account to obtain a macroscopic size-dependent yield function for nanoporous materials containing aligned cylindrical nanovoids. Based on the modified Hill's condition, the strains are decomposed into two parts, a part due to the external...
