    Abstract
Although curcumin is highly cytotoxic against cancer cells, its hydrophobicity and fast degradation at physiological pH limit its effective practical application. To prevent such limitations, inexpensive curcumin-loaded starch particles are synthesized in this research. Particles are prepared by water-in-oil (W/O) miniemulsion technique and an adsorption method is used for curcumin loading. Also, encapsulation efficiency (%EE) is improved by using pluronic F-127 in the drug solution. Particles are characterized, swelling studies are performed, and MTT assays against human adipose mesenchymal stem cells (hAMSCs) and MG-63 cells are utilized for investigations. Results indicate that...

    Abstract
In this study, modeling of an irreversible thermoelectric heat pump was conducted, and its performance was assessed in terms of exergy for 10, 20, 30 and 40 K difference in temperature (∆T) by changing the values of the design parameters. By employing this model, positive impact of increasing cross-section area, current and thermocouple’s length which in turn increases the exergy efficiency is realized. In addition, diminishing adverse impact of adding more thermocouples on the exergy efficiency of the system is illustrated. Afterward, exergoeconomic performance of the thermoelectric heat pump is evaluated. Then, exergoeconomic factor for each of the system’s components is diagnosed. The...

Investigations have shown the traces of antibiotics in surface water, groundwater, wastewater treatment plants, and drinking water. However, conventional wastewater treatment is not entirely effective for vancomycin degradation. Advanced oxidation is one of the most widespread methods of antibiotic degradation in aqueous media. Vancomycin was quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography. The Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on Central Composite Design (CCD) was used to explore and optimise the effect of the independent variables on vancomycin degradation. Independent variables were as follows: pH (3–11), vancomycin concentration (15–75 mg/L), TiO2–clinoptilolite (25–125 mg in...

    Abstract
Availability of hydrocarbon gases at the field makes it attractive for gas-based enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods such as water alternating gas (WAG) injection. Optimization of EOR methods requires too many simulation runs, which are time consuming and expensive. Therefore, developing a proxy model, which emulates simulator outputs, is considered as an appropriate alternative technique. In this work, effects of composition changes of injection gas, WAG ratio, and slug size on produced oil and water were investigated. In addition, the optimum value of the previous parameters, including some constraints, are presented using response surface methodology. Experimental design is also applied...

    Abstract
As the ordinary least squares (OLS) method is very sensitive to outliers as well as to correlated responses, a robust coefficient estimation method is proposed in this paper for multi-response surfaces in multistage processes based on M-estimators. In this approach, experimental designs are used in which the intermediate response variables may act as covariates in the next stages. The performances of both the ordinary multivariate OLS and the proposed robust multi-response surface approach are analyzed and compared through extensive simulation experiments. Sum of the squared errors in estimating the regression coefficients reveals the efficiency of the proposed robust approach. © 2017 Taylor...
