    Abstract
Energy production from fossil fuels such as oil and gas is one of the non-renewable energies, which causes many environmental problems such as global warming and environmental pollution. The existence of these problems has led to agreements such as the Glasgow Environmental Agreement, which obligates governments to apply methods to reduce the production of greenhouse gases, which include reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and increasing the use of renewable energy. Sea wave energy is one of the renewable energies that can be used to generate electricity. In the seas of Iran, including the Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf and Oman, there are sources of wave energy that can be used and are...

A Study on Strategic Behavior of Passengers on Ride-hailing Platforms

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Torknezhad, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Aslani, Shirin (Supervisor)
    Abstract
There are two customer sides, a demand and a supply-side, in a two-sided platform. Through this research, we study customer's behavior in demand side, which are passengers in a ride-hailing platform. At first, we determine behavior that is considered strategic behavior, and based on this behavior, we divide passengers into two separate groups, strategic and non-strategic passengers. We want to address the differences between strategic and non-strategic passengers' performance based on their acceptance rate and acceptance time of their requests. Then, we investigate the difference between their monthly number of requests, rides, and total monthly expenditures. Furthermore, we run a logistic...

    , Article 2021 IEEE Power and Energy Society Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference, ISGT 2021, 16 February 2021 through 18 February 2021 ; 2021 ; 9781728188973 (ISBN) Lotfi, A ; Ghassemi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2021
    Abstract
This paper introduces a new concept that we call smart transmission expansion planning (TEP) based on unconventional high surge impedance Loading (HSIL) line designs that will revolutionize power delivery. To date, these two areas (TEP and transmission line design) have been conducted separately. For TEP, planners use the electrical parameters of a few standard conventional line designs to study planning scenarios, and then, the final candidate line is constructed. In such a sequence, cost-effective scenarios often do not meet the technical criteria of load flow. This paper will demonstrate that this sequence can be overturned; namely, a transmission expansion planner can get optimal line...

A substation automation system (SAS) deploys substation operation functions, including control, protection, monitoring, and measuring. Ethernet technology and local area networks (LANs) make it possible to design substation communication architectures with greater reliability, availability, speed, and cost savings than conventional hard-wired systems. This paper proposes a new method to describe topologies of the SAS as an interconnected network. The concept of data...

Nonlinear dynamic analysis of TLP surge motion using homotopy perturbation method

    , Article Ships and Offshore Structures ; Vol. 9, issue. 6 , May , 2014 , p. 569-577 Tabeshpour, M. R ; Shoghi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Tension leg platforms (TLPs) are well-known structures for oil exploitation in deep water. One of the current issues in compliant structures in the sea is variation in frequency and structural response due to a nonlinear parameter in the equation of motion. Variation of frequency is important in fatigue life study of tethers. A perturbation method is used in contrast to the traditional methods. This method does not require a small parameter for finding surge motion of TLP. In this paper, homotopy perturbation method (HPM) is used to solve a highly nonlinear differential equation of surge motion. Calculated responses by HPM are compared with those obtained from both linear and nonlinear...

    , Article IEEE EUROCON 2009, EUROCON 2009, St. Petersburg, 18 May 2009 through 23 May 2009 ; 2009 , Pages 817-822 ; 9781424438617 (ISBN) Shahabi, S ; Babazadeh, D ; Esmaeilnia Shirvani, R ; Purrezagholi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
In order to restrain ferroresonance in coupling capacitor voltage transformers (CCVT), two kinds of ferroresonance suppression circuits (FSCs) , are proposed in this paper: the resonant type, the fastsaturation reactor type which are connected to secondary side of CCVTs. Frequency domain analyses, for voltage ratio magnitude, are carried out for CCVTs to obtain preferable FSC. Furthermore, using surge suppressors such as metal oxide varistors (MOV) to improve the performance of the FSCs is investigated. Time domain simulations demonstrate that ferroresonance can be cleared in few cycles in presence of FSCs. The Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) is used for modeling and fine-tuning...

    Abstract
This study presents the results of failure analysis of a 28 MW gas turbine at the Rei electrical power plant. The gas turbine failed during the shutdown period and near its second natural frequency at 4200 rpm. Initial inspections revealed that the compressor disk of stage 15 was fractured, and all of the stationary and rotary blades of stages 14-18 of the compressor had been detached or broken from the dovetail region of the disks. The fracture roots were investigated by performing finite element modeling and fractography analysis. It was shown that a crack was initiated from the disk edge on its interface with the rotor shaft and was propagated under cyclic loading. As a result of the...

    , Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Volume 188 , 2020 Shamsoddini, M ; Vahidi, B ; Razani, R ; Nafisi, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
Vulnerability of power electronic converters in DC microgrids in case of fault occurrence in DC cables necessitates using a fast fault detection and isolation scheme. In this paper, a modified, fast and selective protection scheme has been presented, which provides the required tripping of low voltage DC (LVDC) microgrids. This protection scheme has been developed based on the natural characteristics of the fault current, in which the first and second derivatives of the fault current have been employed to define thresholds for discriminating between faulted and non-faulted situations. To enhance fault detection capability of the protection scheme, definition of thresholds have been improved...

    Abstract
Previous experiments on the fouling/current and fouling/wave interactions were mostly limited to two dimensional (2D) net panels or isolated twines. The current paper deals with the wave-induced forces/moments in three dimensional (3D) physical models of a gravity net-cage. The colonial hydroid Ectopleura larynx, a common fouling organism in the aquaculture industry, was artificially modelled and considered in the current experiments. A clean cage and cages with different fouling lengths were tested under deep-water regular wave trains. The time series of the wave-induced forces/moments in the surge, sway, roll and pitch degrees of freedom were recorded and analysed. The experimental results...

    Abstract
Design of centrifugal compressors can be accomplished using methods provided in text books and open literature. In this general approach, after determination of dimensions in meridional plane, blade profiles are designed using aerodynamic methods. Then, some blades are trimmed at the beginning to avoid inlet blockage. But there is no clear guidance on how this trimming must be performed. With this widely implemented method, splitter blades have the same profile as main ones. In this research, blade profiles and dimensions of the compressor impeller are not changed while the effect of changes in the position and angle of splitters leading edge are investigated. An optimization scheme is...

A voltage balancing scheme for series igbts to increase their expected lifetime in pulsed load applications

    , Article IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics ; Volume 9, Issue 1 , 2021 , Pages 461-471 ; 21686777 (ISSN) Mohsenzade, S ; Zarghani, M ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2021
    Abstract
Clamp mode resistor capacitor diode (CMRCD) snubbers have a simple and easy implementing structure. They have been widely adopted in the pulsed power supplies to provide a safe operating condition for the series insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). The main problem of the CMRCD snubbers is their poor performance in the voltage balancing of the series IGBTs. They are essentially overvoltage protectors and clamp the voltage of the IGBTs in a probable potentially dangerous condition. This issue diminishes the expected lifetime of the series IGBTs, where a number of them face a higher level of the voltage than that of the others. The unbalanced voltage of the series IGBTs will result in a...

A series stacked IGBT switch with robustness against short-circuit fault for pulsed power applications

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics ; Volume 33, Issue 5 , May , 2018 , Pages 3779-3790 ; 08858993 (ISSN) Mohsenzade, S ; Zarghany, M ; Kaboli, S ; Sharif University of Technology
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc  2018
    Abstract
The limited value of the insolated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) blocking voltage is an important issue for applying these devices to the high-voltage power converters. An effective solution is to use a series configuration of these devices in order to achieve higher voltage ratings in addition to save the interesting features such as fast rising time. To reach this goal, acceptable equal voltage sharing for the IGBTs are provided by the series stacking schemes in the normal operation. However, a considerable difference in their voltage level will be occurred in the short-circuit condition. Although the IGBT can withstand the short-circuit current in a defined time, the occurred high...
