A decomposed solution to multiple-energy carriers optimal power flow

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Power Systems ; Vol. 29, issue. 2 , March , 2014 , p. 707-716 ; ISSN: 8858950 Moeini-Aghtaie, M ; Abbaspour, A ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Hajipour, E ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Presence of energy hubs in the future vision of energy networks creates a great opportunity for system planners and operators to move towards more efficient systems. The role of energy hubs as the intermediate in multi-carrier energy (MCE) systems calls for a generic framework to study the new upcoming technical as well as economical effects on the system performance. In response, this paper attempts to develop a general optimization and modeling framework for coupled power flow studies on different energy infrastructures. This, as a large-scale nonlinear problem, is approached through a robust optimization technique, i.e., multi-agent genetic algorithm (MAGA). The proposed procedure...

Supporting non-contiguous processor allocation in mesh-based chip multiprocessors using virtual point-to-point links

    , Article IET Computers and Digital Techniques ; Vol. 6, issue. 5 , September , 2012 , pp. 302-317 ; ISSN: 17518601 Asadinia, M ; Modarressi, M ; Sarbazi-Azad, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this study, the authors propose a processor allocation mechanism for run-time assignment of a set of communicating tasks of input applications onto the processing nodes of a chip multiprocessor, when the arrival order and execution lifetime of the input applications are not known a priori. This mechanism targets the on-chip communication and aims to reduce the power and latency of the network-on-chip employed as the communication infrastructure. In this work, the authors benefit from the advantages of non-contiguous processor allocation mechanisms, by allowing the tasks of the input application mapped onto disjoint regions (submeshes) and then virtually connecting them by bypassing the...

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose a processor allocation mechanism for run-time assignment of a set of communicating tasks of input applications onto the processing nodes of a Chip Multiprocessor (CMP), when the arrival order and execution lifetime of the input applications are not known a priori. In this work, we benefit from the advantages of non-contiguous processor allocation mechanisms, by allowing the tasks of the input application mapped onto disjoint regions (sub-meshes) and then virtually connecting them by bypassing the router pipeline stages of...

Using sliding mode control to adjust drum level of a boiler unit with time varying parameters

    , Article ASME 2010 10th Biennial Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis ; Vol. 5 , 2010 , pp. 29-33 ; ISBN: 9780791849194 Moradi, H ; Bakhtiari-Nejad, F ; Saffar-Avval, M ; Alasty, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Stable control of water level of drum is of great importance for economic operation of power plant steam generator systems. In this paper, a linear model of the boiler unit with time varying parameters is used for simulation. Two transfer functions between drum water level (output variable) and feed-water and steam mass rates (input variables) are considered. Variation of model parameters may be arisen from disturbances affecting water level of drum, model uncertainties and parameter mismatch due to the variant operating conditions. To achieve a perfect tracking of the desired drum water level, two sliding mode controllers are designed separately. Results show that the designed controllers...

    Power-efficient prefetching on GPGPUs

    , Article Journal of Supercomputing ; Volume 71, Issue 8 , August , 2015 , pp. 2808-2829 ; ISSN: 09208542 Falahati, H ; Hessabi, S ; Abdi, M ; Baniasadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The graphics processing unit (GPU) is the most promising candidate platform for achieving faster improvements in peak processing speed, low latency and high performance. The highly programmable and multithreaded nature of GPUs makes them a remarkable candidate for general purpose computing. However, supporting non-graphics computing on graphics processors requires addressing several architectural challenges. In this paper, we focus on improving performance by better hiding long waiting time for transferring data from the slow global memory. Furthermore, we show that the proposed method can reduce power and energy. Reduction in access time to off-chip data has a noticeable role in reducing...

    , Article Quality and Reliability Engineering International ; Vol. 30, Issue. 8 , 2014 , pp. 1285-1292 ; ISSN: 07488017 Shahriari, H ; Haji, M. J ; Eslamipoor, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Enhancing the quality of the product has always been one considerable concern of production process management, and this subject gave way to implementing so many methods including robust design. In this paper, robust design utilizes response surface methodology (RSM) considering the mean and variance of the response variable regarding system design, parameter design, and tolerance design. In this paper, customer requirements and robust design are regarded simultaneously to achieve enriched quality. Subsequently, with a non-linear programming, a novel method for integrating RSM and quality function deployment has been proposed to achieve robustness in design. The customer requirements are...

Dynamic analysis of various investment incentives and regional capacity assignment in Iranian electricity market

    , Article Energy Policy ; Volume 56 , 2013 , Pages 271-284 ; 03014215 (ISSN) Hasani Marzooni, M ; Hosseini, S. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
This paper develops a system dynamics model to analyze the impacts of different kinds of capacity payment as investment incentive mechanisms in Iranian electricity market. Since it is aimed that the incurred capital and operating costs of generation technologies be recovered in Iranian electricity pool, the noncompetitive capacity payment mechanism has been introduced for this purpose in order to encourage new investments in electric power generation system. In the current mechanism, the capacity payments are designated to the generating units in the whole country electricity market. An annual base value of capacity payment is proposed based on recovering the capital cost of a benchmark...

Accurate estimation of leakage power variability in sub-micrometer CMOS circuits

    , Article Proceedings - 15th Euromicro Conference on Digital System Design, DSD 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 18-25 ; 9780769547985 (ISBN) Assare, O ; Momtazpour, M ; Goudarzi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Leakage power has already become the major contributor to the total on-chip power consumption, rendering its estimation a necessary step in the IC design flow. The problem is further exacerbated with the increasing uncertainty in the manufacturing process known as process variability. We develop a method to estimate the variation of leakage power in the presence of both intra-die and inter-die process variability. Various complicating issues of leakage prediction such as spatial correlation of process parameters, the effect of different input states of gates on the leakage, and DIBL and stack effects are taken into account while we model the simultaneous variability of the two most critical...

A decision tree-based method for power system fault diagnosis by synchronized Phasor Measurements

    , Article IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe ; 2012 ; 9781467325974 (ISBN) Dehkordi, P. Z ; Dobakhshari, A. S ; Ranjbar, A. M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper introduces a novel approach for power system fault diagnosis based on synchronized phasor measurements during the fault. The synchronized measurements are obtained in real time from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) and compared with offline thresholds determined by decision trees (DTs) to diagnose the fault. The DTs have already been trained offline using detailed power system analysis for different fault cases. While the traditional methods for fault diagnosis use the status of protective relays (PRs) and circuit breakers (CBs) to infer the fault section in the power system, the proposed method uses the available signals following the fault and thus can be trusted even in case of...

Kinematic effects of gimbal joints on a 3URU parallel manipulator

    , Article ASME 2012 11th Biennial Conference on Engineering Systems Design and Analysis, ESDA 2012 ; Volume 3 , 2012 , Pages 205-210 ; 9780791844861 (ISBN) Baghi, S ; Razban, F ; Osgouie, K. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Gimbal transmissions are non-linear direct transmissions and can be used in robotic arms replacing the traditional revolute joints. They offer potential advantages for critical cases such as joint space and task space singularities or where a different mechanical advantage is needed compared to what traditional revolute joints provide. This can be obtained by properly adjusting the different parameters of Gimbal joints used in different joints of the manipulator (such as their offset angle and/or chamfer angle). In this paper the concept of Gimbal mechanism as a joint is investigated. Then, as an example, Gimbal joints are used to replace the basic revolute joints of a 3-UPU parallel...

    , Article Proceedings - 15th Euromicro Conference on Digital System Design, DSD 2012 ; 2012 , Pages 296-303 ; 9780769547985 (ISBN) Abdollahi, M ; Tavana, M. K ; Koohi, S ; Hessabi, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper proposes a nanophotonic Network-on-Chip architecture based on the traditional Cube-Connected Cycles topology (CCC), which is named as ONC3. We also suggest a contention-free quasi-Dimension-Order-Routing algorithm for the proposed structure. Compared to the previous 2D layouts, our novel scheme lessens the crosstalk parameter of the insertion loss and consequently, the power consumption. Besides, the router structure is area-efficient. On the other hand, optical destination checking supersedes electrical resource reservation, with utilizing passive wavelength routing method and Wavelength Division Multiplexing scheme, simultaneously. The efficiency of the proposed architecture, in...

Using genetic algorithm to identify soft-error derating blocks of an application program

    , Article Proceedings - 15th Euromicro Conference on Digital System Design, DSD 2012, 5 September 2012 through 8 September 2012 ; September , 2012 , Pages 359-367 ; 9780769547985 (ISBN) Arasteh, B ; Rahmani, A. M ; Mansoor, A ; Miremadi, S. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Soft-errors are increasingly considered as a major cause for computer system failures. Software techniques are used as cost-effective and flexible techniques to tolerate soft-errors but the introduced overhead is not acceptable in some safety-critical real-time systems. The identification of the program blocks and protecting only vulnerable blocks against soft-errors reduces the performance overhead. In this paper, we present a genetic algorithm to identify the vulnerable program blocks as well as the derating program blocks against soft-errors. Then, only vulnerable blocks are protected by some software-based soft-error tolerance techniques to achieve a lower performance and space overhead....

    , Article International Conference on Intelligent Systems Design and Applications, ISDA ; 2012 , Pages 645-650 ; 21647143 (ISSN) ; 9781467351188 (ISBN) Veisi, H ; Sameti, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
This paper studies a number of well-known noise estimation techniques and provides a comparative performance analysis of them in speech enhancement platform. Two types of evaluation data that simulate consistent and inconsistent noisy conditions are prepared in the presence of six noise types at different SNR levels. The performance of speech enhancement systems and the spectrum distance of the estimated and original noise spectrums are used as evaluation criteria. The evaluations indicate that a simple VAD method outperforms noise estimation methods in most of the consistent noisy conditions

From traditional to fractional PI control: A key for generalization

    , Article IEEE Industrial Electronics Magazine ; Volume 6, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 41-51 ; 19324529 (ISSN) Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    IEEE  2012
    Abstract
Proportional-integral (PI) controllers are the most common form of feedback used in industrial applications today [1][3]. The use of proportional and integral feedback also has a long history of practical applications [4]. For example, in the middle of the 18th century, centrifugal governors as the proportional feedback were applied to regulate the speed of windmills [5]. By the 19th century, it was known that using integral feedback could remove the offsets appearing in working with governors [6]. At present, PI control, still a very basic form of feedback, is also one of the first solutions often considered in the control of industrial systems [7]. On the other hand, in some applications,...

The RF Front-END contains a power amplifier (PA) in transmit chain and receive front-end with low-noise amplifier, up/down mixer, LP filter and variable-gain amplifier. In the transmitter, a differential PA with a new power combiner is designed and fabricated in a 0.18-μm technology. The chip area is 2.65 mm × 1.35 mm including...

Influence of ridge filter material on the beam efficiency and secondary neutron production in a proton therapy system

    , Article Zeitschrift fur Medizinische Physik ; Volume 22, Issue 3 , September , 2012 , Pages 231-240 ; 09393889 (ISSN) Riazi, Z ; Afarideh, H ; Sadighi-Bonabi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2012
    Abstract
In this work, the 3D proton dose profile is calculated in a homogenous water phantom using a Monte Carlo application developed with the Geant4 toolkit. The effect of the ridge filter material (for SOBP widths of 6, 9 and 12 cm) on the homogeneity of the dose distribution, secondary neutron production and beam efficiency are investigated in a single ring wobbling irradiation system. The energy spectrum of secondary neutrons per primary proton at various locations around the phantom surface is calculated. The simulation revealed that most of the produced neutrons are released at slight angles which enable them to reach the patient and consequently to be hazardous. Also, the homogeneity of the...

Using partial tag comparison in low-power snoop-based chip multiprocessors

, Article Lecture Notes in Computer Science (including subseries Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence and Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics), 19 June 2010 through 23 June 2010 ; Volume 6161 LNCS , June , 2012 , Pages 211-221 ; 03029743 (ISSN) ; 9783642243219 (ISBN) Shafiee, A ; Shahidi, N ; Baniasadi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this work we introduce power optimizations relying on partial tag comparison (PTC) in snoop-based chip multiprocessors. Our optimizations rely on the observation that detecting tag mismatches in a snoop-based chip multiprocessor does not require aggressively processing the entire tag. In fact, a high percentage of cache mismatches could be detected by utilizing a small subset but highly informative portion of the tag bits. Based on this, we introduce a source-based snoop filtering mechanism referred to as S-PTC. In S-PTC possible remote tag mismatches are detected prior to sending the request. We reduce power as S-PTC prevents sending unnecessary snoops and avoids unessential tag lookups...

Overshoot in the step response of fractional-order control systems

    , Article Journal of Process Control ; Volume 22, Issue 1 , January , 2012 , Pages 90-94 ; 09591524 (ISSN) Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, a sufficient condition for existence of an overshoot in the step response of fractional-order systems is presented. Based on this condition, it can be shown that the existence of an overshoot in the step responses of some classes of fractional-order systems (for example, the class of fractional-order systems having commensurate orders between 1 and 2) is unavoidable. To show the usefulness of the obtained condition, this condition is applied to prove some results on the time response analysis of fractional-order control systems

    Abstract
In this experimental study, a four stroke diesel engine was conducted to investigate the effect of adding water-based ferrofluid to diesel fuel on engine performance. To our knowledge, Magnetic nanoparticles had not been used before. To this end, emulsified diesel fuels of 0, 0.4, and 0.8 water-based ferrofluid/Diesel ratios by volume were used as fuel. The ferrofluid used in this study was a handmade water-based ferrofluid prepared by the authors. The results show that adding water-based ferrofluid to diesel fuel has a perceptible effect on engine performance, increasing the brake thermal efficiency relatively up to 12%, and decreasing the brake specific fuel consumption relatively up to...

    Abstract
In this paper we have presented a hardware implementation of 32-bit Fault-tolerant ALU (Arithmetic and Logic Unit) which is compared with the current techniques, Residue code, Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) with single voting and TMR with triplicated voter that are widely used in space application to mitigate the upsets, in terms of area penalty. We consider BCH (Bose, Chaudhuri, and Hocquenghem) codec (encoder, decoder) using the prototyping FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array). The new implementation of ALU employing BCH code on Spartan-3 FPGA has been provided. The results show that our fault tolerant method has the lowest hardware overhead and it can correct any 5-bit error in any...
