    Abstract
Intense global competition, dynamic product variations, and rapid technological developments force manufacturing systems to adapt and respond quickly to various changes in the market. Such responsiveness could be achieved through new paradigms such as Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS). In this paper, the problem of configuration design for a scalable reconfigurable RMS that produces different products of a part family is addressed. In order to handle demand fluctuations of products throughout their lifecycles with minimum cost, RMS configurations must change as well. Two different approaches are developed for addressing the system configuration design in different periods. Both...

    Abstract
Computed tomography (CT) is one of the most valuable diagnostic imaging tools in the clinic and is widely used worldwide. One of the main motivations driving research and development in CT is to achieve better image quality while keeping the radiation dose to the patient as low as possible. In this regard, computer simulations play a key role in the optimization of CT design. In this work, a fan-beam source model (FBSM) for the simulation of multi-slice fan-beam CT scanners using the MCNP Monte Carlo code, has been developed and implemented. The use of this model removes the need for using the collimator in the system configuration and thus to overcome the perennial problem of particle...

On designing endurance aware erasure code for SSD-based storage systems

    , Article Microprocessors and Microsystems ; Volume 45 , 2016 , Pages 283-296 ; 01419331 (ISSN) Alinezhad Chamazcoti, S ; Miremadi, S. G ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Erasure codes are applied in both HDD and SSD storage systems to improve the reliability. The design of erasure codes for SSD-based systems should be performed with respect to a specific feature of SSDs, i.e., endurance. Endurance is defined as the number of Program/Erase (P/E)-cycles that one SSD can endure for reliable operation. The common metric for comparing the endurance of two systems is the number of P/E-cycles, which is yielded by time-consuming simulations. This paper proposes two new metrics called DPD-factor and GDP-pattern, for comparing the effect of erasure codes on the endurance of systems based on their encoding designs, without simulation. With respect to the endurance,...

Performance of a standalone wind-hydrogen power system for regions with seasonal wind profile: A case study in Khaf region

    , Article Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments ; Vol. 7 , September , 2014 , pp. 265-278 ; ISSN: 22131388 Ahmadi, S ; Rezaei Mirghaed, M ; Roshandel, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The present study was aimed at performance and energy analysis of a hybrid wind-hydrogen power system. Such system consists of wind turbines, batteries for the short time energy storage, electrolyzer, fuel cell and hydrogen tank for long time energy storage. The proposed configuration is used to supply energy demand of a region with discrete seasonal wind speed regime. Temporary wind energy profiles restrict using batteries for electricity storage as they lose much electrical stored energy for the long time. Based on direct wind turbine usage, batteries and hydrogen storage, different energy supply strategies are introduced and analyzed to power the household electricity demand. The energy...

Site specific optimization of wind turbines energy cost: Iterative approach

    , Article Energy Conversion and Management ; Volume 73 , September , 2013 , Pages 167-175 ; 01968904 (ISSN) Rezaei Mirghaed, M ; Roshandel, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The present study was aimed at developing a model to optimize the sizing parameters and farm layout of wind turbines according to the wind resource and economic aspects. The proposed model, including aerodynamic, economic and optimization sub-models, is used to achieve minimum levelized cost of electricity. The blade element momentum theory is utilized for aerodynamic modeling of pitch-regulated horizontal axis wind turbines. Also, a comprehensive cost model including capital costs of all turbine components is considered. An iterative approach is used to develop the optimization model. The modeling results are presented for three potential regions in Iran: Khaf, Ahar and Manjil. The optimum...
