Abstract
Obstruction of left anterior descending artery (LAD) due to the thrombosis or atherosclerotic plaques is the leading cause of death worldwide. Targeted delivery of drugs through micro- and nanoparticles is a very promising approach for developing new strategies in clot-busting or treating restenosis. In this work, we modelled the blood flow characteristics in a patient-specific reconstructed LAD artery by the fluid–solid interaction method and based on physiological boundary conditions. Next, we provided a Lagrangian description of micro- and nanoparticles dynamics in the blood flow considering their Brownian motion and the particle–particle interactions. Our results state that the number of...

Abstract
The prediction of deposition efficiency of submicron particles in the pulmonary alveoli has received special attention due to its importance for drug delivery systems and for assessing air pollutants health risks. In this work, the pulmonary alveoli of a healthy human are idealized by a three-dimensional honeycomb-like configuration and a fluid-structure interaction analysis is performed. In contrast to previous works in which the inlet flow rate is predefined, in this model, a negative pressure is imposed on the outside surface of the flalveolus which causes air to flow in and out of the alveolus. The resulting flow patterns confirmed that there was no circulation in the terminal alveolus....

Abstract
Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is a biocompatible polymer which can be physically crosslinked by Borax to form hydrogel. PVA-Borax (PB) hydrogel is a promising candidate for drug delivery system. Therefore, it is necessary to find the quantitative relationship between drug release rate and network structure of PB hydrogels to predict and control drug release rate. In this work, at first step the optimum ratio of Borax: PVA was determined by studying the interactions between PVA chains and Borax molecules by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, while viscoelastic properties of prepared PB hydrogels were measured in the oscillatory shear flow field. In the following, curcumin as a...

, Article Journal of Nanoparticle Research ; Volume 20, Issue 10 , 2018 ; 13880764 (ISSN) ; Dastanpour, L ; Mazaheri Tehrani, Z ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In this research, we report a magnetic pH-sensitive polymeric micelle designed for hydrophobic drug carrier in cancer treatment. This carrier was prepared by self-assembly of biodegradable triblock copolymer PEG-PCL-PEG coated on oleate-modified magnetic nanoparticles. The amphiphilic triblock copolymer was synthesized via reaction between the aldehyde group from the hydrophilic component with the amine group of the hydrophobic component. The resulting Schiff base linkage was sensitive to pH. The structure of nanocarrier was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR). Morphology and size of the magnetic...

Abstract
In this study, novel hydrogel nanoparticles with dual triggerable release properties based on fibrous structural proteins (keratin) and thermoresponsive copolymers (Pluronic) are introduced. Nanoparticles were used for curcumin delivery as effective and safe anticancer agents, the hydrophobicity of which has limited their clinical applications. A drug was loaded into hydrogel nanoparticles by a single-step nanoprecipitation method. The drug-loaded nanoparticles had an average diameter of 165 and 66 nm at 25 and 37 °C, respectively. It was shown that the drug loading efficiency could be enhanced through crosslinking of the disulfide bonds in keratin. Crosslinking provided a targeted release...

Abstract
Arrayed Ti6Al4V nanotubes (TNT) coated with hydroxyapatite (HA) were synthesized via electrochemical anodization method. Paracetamol was loaded onto TNT-HA electrode. Effects of anodization, nanotube formation and hydroxyapatite deposition on sorption and release of the drug were investigated. Saturation time of paracetamol on the anodized samples was 30% shorter than the hydroxyapatite-coated samples. Release behavior of the loaded drug was studied by (a) plunging the probe into phosphate buffered saline (PBS), (b) sampling the drug-loaded PBS at different times and (c) analyzing the solution via ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. Results showed that HA electrodes hold higher...

Abstract
Magnetic micelle nanoparticles with thermoresponsive behavior were designed for thermo-triggered paclitaxel delivery. For this purpose, thermoresponsive triblock copolymer poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide)-b-polycaprolactone-b-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) was prepared. The magnetic micelle was formed by self-assembly of triblock copolymer on the magnetite which was coated by oleic acid. The size of the magnetic micelle was between 30–40 nm reported by transmission electron microscopy. Also, dynamic light scattering indicated the hydrodynamic diameter was thermal dependent. Moreover, the drug release profile showed thermo-triggered release of paclitaxel. Thus, the smart nanocarrier has potential...

Abstract
Chronic, non-healing wounds place a significant burden on patients and healthcare systems, resulting in impaired mobility, limb amputation, or even death. Chronic wounds result from a disruption in the highly orchestrated cascade of events involved in wound closure. Significant advances in our understanding of the pathophysiology of chronic wounds have resulted in the development of drugs designed to target different aspects of the impaired processes. However, the hostility of the wound environment rich in degradative enzymes and its elevated pH, combined with differences in the time scales of different physiological processes involved in tissue regeneration require the use of effective drug...

Abstract
For thousands of years, plants and their products have been used as the mainstay of medicinal therapy. In recent years, besides attempts to isolate the active ingredients of medicinal plants, other new applications of plant products, such as their use to prepare drug delivery vehicles, have been discovered. Nanobiotechnology is a branch of pharmacology that can provide new approaches for drug delivery by the preparation of biocompatible carrier nanoparticles (NPs). In this article, we review recent studies with four important plant proteins that have been used as carriers for targeted delivery of drugs and genes. Zein is a water-insoluble protein from maize; Gliadin is a 70% alcohol-soluble...

Abstract
Since most of the anticancer drugs have low solubility in water, the clinical use of them is limited unless by some modification the solubility increases or the drug is carried with a soluble compartment. To solve this problem, we prepared a magnetic nanocarrier with a hydrophobic surface based on oleic acid chains in which hydrophobic drug molecules such as doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX) and paclitaxel (PTX) are easily adsorbed onto the surface. Since the drug molecules are physically adsorbed on the surface, large amounts of DOX (282 mg·g-1) and PTX (316 mg·g-1) were immobilized onto the nanocarrier. Then, the surface of the drug loaded magnetic core was covered by a smart pH-sensitive...

Abstract
Nanoscaled quantum dots (QDs), with unique optical properties have been used for the development of theranostics. Here, InP/ZnS QDs were synthesised and functionalised with folate (QD-FA), D-glucosamine (QD-GA) or both (QD-FA-GA). The bi-functionalised QDs were further conjugated with doxorubicin (QD-FA-GA-DOX). Optimum Indium to fatty acid (In:MA) ratio was 1:3.5. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs revealed spherical morphology for the QDs (11 nm). Energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) spectrum confirmed the chemical composition of the QDs. MTT analysis in the OVCAR-3 cells treated with bare QDs, QD-FA, QD-GA, QD-FA-GA and QD-FA-GA-DOX (0.2 mg/mL of QDs) after 24 h indicated...

Abstract
Electrospray is an old processing technique that has recently been rediscovered. This technology is revolutionizing the biomaterials and nanotechnology fields by opening up new areas of research in fabricating drug delivery nano-devices. Due to their size, nanoparticles have the advantage of reaching less accessible sites in the body by escaping phagocytosis and entering tiny capillaries. Nanoparticles also have the unique property to accumulate at the site of inflammation and therefore, are very suitable for targeted drug delivery. The feasibility of fabricating relatively monodispersed polymeric nanoparticles by electrospray method in a modified electrospray setup is demonstrated in this...

Abstract
Chondroitinase ABCI (cABCI) is a drug enzyme that can be used to treat spinal cord injuries. Due to low thermal stability of cABCI, this enzyme was immobilized on Fe3O4 nanoparticle to increase its thermal stability. The size and morphology, structure and magnetic property of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles were characterized by the analyses of SEM, XRD and VSM, respectively, and FTIR spectroscopy was employed to confirm the immobilization of cABCI on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The results indicated that the optimum conditions for pH, temperature, cABCI-to-Fe3O4 mass ratio and incubation time in immobilization process were 6.5, 15 °C, 0.75 and 4.5 h, respectively, and about 0.037 mg cABCI...

Abstract
The multistep release of therapeutic agents in the theranostic particulate systems has remained as a challenge in smart drug delivery. In this study, superparamagnetic nanoparticles of Fe3O4 were coated with a blend of F127/F68 grades of pluronic in order to adjust the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and consequently engineering of the release temperature. Pluronic as a biocompatible thermo-sensitive polymer is frequently used as a self-emulsifying drug delivery system. Magnetite nanoparticles with double layer coating of oleic acid and pluronic F127 have been reported as an on-demand smart carrier for hydrophobic drugs. LCST was examined using differential scanning calorimetry...
