Growth Decomposition and Estimation of Investment-Specific Technological Change in Iran’s Industry

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini Jebeli, Hossein (Author) ; Nili, Massoud (Supervisor) ; Abedini, Javad (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
The aim of this research was estimation of investment-specific technological change, using industrial database which is published annually by Bureau of Statistics of Iran. Investment-specific technological change is the quality improvement of investment in capital goods during the time. Before estimation of this rate, production function (regarding 130 industrial activities and during 14 years, 1994-2007) was estimated. All industries classified in 4 groups based on the level of technology used in them. Then factor’s production elasticities were compared between different groups of industries. The results showed that in high-tech industries the elasticities of skilled workers, import and...

Quantification of technological progress in greenhouse gas (GHG) capture and mitigation using patent data

    , Article Energy and Environmental Science ; Volume 12, Issue 9 , 2019 , Pages 2789-2805 ; 17545692 (ISSN) Sharifzadeh, M ; Triulzi, G ; Magee, C. L ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Greenhouse gas emissions from anthropogenic sources are believed to be the main cause of global warming and climate change. Furthermore, fossil fuels are forecasted to remain the dominant source of energy in the near future. Therefore, capture and sequestration of greenhouse gases and in particular carbon dioxide is likely to be a major pathway toward environmental protection and energy sustainability. Such clarity has stimulated an intense and diverse range of research into various capture and mitigation technologies, which race with global warming in real-time. Quantification of the performance improvement rates of these technologies can inform decision-makers' long-term investment...

    Abstract
Gas permeation through nanoscale pores is ubiquitous in nature and has an important role in many technologies 1,2 . Because the pore size is typically smaller than the mean free path of gas molecules, the flow of the gas molecules is conventionally described by Knudsen theory, which assumes diffuse reflection (random-angle scattering) at confining walls 3-7 . This assumption holds surprisingly well in experiments, with only a few cases of partially specular (mirror-like) reflection known 5,8-11 . Here we report gas transport through ångström-scale channels with atomically flat walls 12,13 and show that surface scattering can be either diffuse or specular, depending on the fine details of the...

Design for well-being: The fourth generation of technology development

    , Article Technology in Society ; Volume 67 , November , 2021 ; 0160791X (ISSN) Kafaee, M ; Ansarian, Z ; Taqavi, M ; Heidari, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
Despite the importance of well-being, few studies have been conducted on the relationship between well-being and technology. In this paper, the development of technology from the perspective of well-being studies are divided into three generations. In higher generations, the main criterion of technology development becomes more comprehensive, in order to decrease the side effects of technology. We introduce the fourth generation in which well-being is the main criterion of the design process. Although it may not seem necessary to say that the purpose of most technologies is implicitly well-being, we show that the domination of physical pleasure in terms of “use and convenience” in the modern...

A distribution network expansion planning model considering distributed generation options and techo-economical issues

    , Article Energy ; Volume 35, Issue 8 , 2010 , Pages 3364-3374 ; 03605442 (ISSN) Soroudi, A ; Ehsan, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
This paper presents a dynamic multi-objective model for distribution network expansion, considering the distributed generations as non-wire solutions. The proposed model simultaneously optimizes two objectives namely, total costs and technical constraint satisfaction by finding the optimal schemes of sizing, placement and specially the dynamics (i.e., timing) of investments on DG units and/or network reinforcements over the planning period. An efficient heuristic search method is proposed to find non-dominated solutions of the formulated problem and a fuzzy satisfying method is used to choose the final solution. The effectiveness of the proposed model and search method are assessed and...

A dynamic view of technological regime concept: Toward a framework for industrial policies in developing countries

    Abstract
It is beyond dispute that technological change acts as a driver of economic growth. In developing countries where highly suffer from lack of this process, incremental innovation is considered as main source of technology capability building and development In moving toward this pass and to meet with time pressure of catching up, developing countries acquire the initial required knowledge base through technology absorption from outside sources; On the other hand as development is a lengthy process, it is important that the absorbed knowledge still has the potential of more advancement in future. Therefore a selection instrument with ability of assessing different knowledge base or...
