Elaborating Religious Guidelines for Technological Development
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Taqavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
Abstract
Some philosophers and thinkers have made serious criticisms of modern technology, considering it the cause of major problems. These critiques and problems have motivated some philosophers to think of alternatives for technology. Andrew Feenberg, one of the scholars seeking alternatives for technology, argues that the modern technical system is derived from the values of capitalism and serves a select few. As a diagnosis, Feenberg considers the capitalistic values to be the root of modern technological crises and as a prescription, he recommends a “democratic technological design system”. Feenberg has proposed no criteria for evaluating the values that could be incorporated into the...
Turboexpander Technology Development Model and Display Roadmap for Pressure Reducing System based Energy Recovery by Turboexpander
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Saboohi, Yadollah (Supervisor)
Abstract
High pressure natural gas is transported from processing plants to end users via a network of natural gas system. Pressure reduction along the transport system is compensated in compressor stations. High pressure natural gas flows in to distribution network in demand center which operates at medium pressure. Medium pressure gas is transferred to end users who can use natural gas with low pressure. Therefore, pressure of natural gas is reduced consequently when gas flows from transport systems to distribution network and end users. Work is dissipated during pressure reduction which otherwise could be converted in to power.A technology that could be utilized for conversion of pressure work in...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Souzanchi Kashani, Ebrahim (Supervisor)
Abstract
Our country in no measure is considered as an industrial one, despite its chain of small, medium and large industries. The vague, general “developing” term might be the best term to assign to economic-industrial condition of our country. We have a fairly limited number of big industrial firms (BIF) which could continue operation without state’s supports in a world BIFs are considered as the key indices in industrial development. The question comes to mind with reading what came above is this study’s main question, “What went wrong?”. This study follows the historical approach to the question through a comprehensive case study. Historical case-study thus is our main research approach here....

Abstract
Intense global competition, dynamic product variations, and rapid technological developments force manufacturing systems to adapt and respond quickly to various changes in the market. Such responsiveness could be achieved through new paradigms such as Reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS). In this paper, the problem of configuration design for a scalable reconfigurable RMS that produces different products of a part family is addressed. In order to handle demand fluctuations of products throughout their lifecycles with minimum cost, RMS configurations must change as well. Two different approaches are developed for addressing the system configuration design in different periods. Both...

Stochastic modeling of the energy supply system with uncertain fuel price - A case of emerging technologies for distributed power generation
, Article Applied Energy ; Volume 93 , 2012 , Pages 668-674 ; 03062619 (ISSN) ; Saboohi, Y ; Sharif University of Technology
2012
Abstract
A deterministic energy supply model with bottom-up structure has limited capability in handling the uncertainties. To enhance the applicability of such a model in an uncertain environment two main issues have been investigated in the present paper. First, a binomial lattice is generated based on the stochastic nature of the source of uncertainty. Second, an energy system model (ESM) has been reformulated as a multistage stochastic problem. The result of the application of the modified energy model encompasses all uncertain outcomes together and enables optimal timing of capacity expansion. The performance of the model has been demonstrated with the help of a case study. The case study has...

Abstract
Despite the importance of well-being, few studies have been conducted on the relationship between well-being and technology. In this paper, the development of technology from the perspective of well-being studies are divided into three generations. In higher generations, the main criterion of technology development becomes more comprehensive, in order to decrease the side effects of technology. We introduce the fourth generation in which well-being is the main criterion of the design process. Although it may not seem necessary to say that the purpose of most technologies is implicitly well-being, we show that the domination of physical pleasure in terms of “use and convenience” in the modern...
