    Abstract
Pulsating heat pipes (PHPs) are one of the new devices used for cooling in several applications such as electronic and aerospace systems. Their low cost, effectiveness at various conditions, being equipped for passive energy conversion, and well distribution of temperature compared to conventional heat pipes are among the reasons of their popularity. To investigate the effect of surface tension of the working fluid on the behavior of PHPs, a copper heat pipe is fabricated with inner and outer diameters of 2 mm and 4 mm, respectively. Five different concentrations of cetrimonium bromide (C-Tab) surfactant are dissolved in water and are tested with a filling ratio of 50% (± 1%). A piece of...

    , Article International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer ; Volume 149 , 2020 Hosseinpour, V ; Kazemeini, M ; Rashidi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2020
    Abstract
In this study, the effects of geometry and operating conditions upon the thermal and hydraulic performance of Finned Microchannel Heat Sink (FMCHS) were investigated. Water and aluminum were considered as fluid and solid for the computational domain (30 mm × 0.8 mm × 0.8 mm). The Microchannel (MC) was supposed to have 0.65 mm height with an aspect ratio of 0.5. CFD analysis was applied for the assessments of four-types of micro-fins (i.e., conical, pyramidal, cylindrical and cubical). In order to evaluate the effects of height, diameter, the spacing of fins and Reynolds number on the overall performance of FMCHS, central composite design at five levels was used to generate design points....

    , Article Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry ; 2020 Sadrameli, S. M ; Forootan, D ; Farajimoghaddam, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Netherlands  2020
    Abstract

The working fluid inventory was considered 0.1, 0.14, 0.18 and 0.24 of total volume of thermosyphon and in each case 54–235 W of heat input applied to the evaporator area also. In order to evaluate the transient behavior of the thermosyphon, in any amount of working fluid, 28 W of heat input was considered and temperature of the evaporator area were recorded at different...

    , Article Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry ; Volume 137, Issue 5 , 2019 , Pages 1603-1613 ; 13886150 (ISSN) Heydarian, R ; Shafii, M. B ; Rezaee Shirin Abadi, A ; Ghasempour, R ; Alhuyi Nazari, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer Netherlands  2019
    Abstract
In this study, a mixture of nano-encapsulated phase change materials in water has been used as the working fluid in a pulsating heat pipe in order to investigate its thermal performance. The results of the experiments showed that using the nano-encapsulated paraffin dispersed in water as working fluid improves heat transfer and decreases the thermal resistance of the pulsating heat pipe. On the other hand, among the tested concentrations for nano-encapsulated paraffin, there is an optimal value in which increasing the concentration causes an increase in the thermal resistance of the pulsating heat pipe due to the increased dynamic viscosity of the fluid. Enhancement in the thermal...

Pure water and ethanol were used as working fluids with filling ratios of 30%, 50%, and 70% by volume, and the RCLPHP was tested at four rotational speeds: 200, 400, 600, and 800 rpm. The results showed that the best filling ratio for both water and ethanol is 50% and proved that the RCLPHP is able to work efficiently in a wide range of rotational speed. Moreover, it was observed that at the optimum filling ratio for ethanol and...

    Abstract
Heat pipes are important cooling devices that are widely used to transfer high heat loads with low temperature differences. In this paper, thermal performance of a novel type of sintered-wick heat pipe, namely, partly sintered-wick heat pipe, was investigated. The heat pipe was filled with degassed water and acetone, as working uids, and effects of filling ratio, orientation, and heat inputs were tested. Moreover, conditions at which dryout occurred were presented. The results showed that the best filling ratio for both working uids is about 20%. The heat pipe filled with water has better thermal performance than that filled with acetone; thus, the thermal resistances of the 20% water-filled...

    Abstract
In this paper, the effect of different parameters on the thermal operation of a Closed Loop Pulsating Heat Pipe (CLPHP) has been investigated. These parameters include the working fluid, the inclination angle, the filling ratio, and the input heat flux. The effect of nanoparticle mass concentrations has been analyzed as well. It was observed that the CLPHP can decrease thermal resistance up to 11.5 times compared to the same empty copper tube with thermal resistance of 9.4 K/W. Optimum thermal operation for a system with the water-silver nanofluid was achieved at conditions of the 50% filling ratio with thermal resistance of 0.9 K/W, and for the water-titanium oxide system, the optimal...

    Abstract
Network-on-Chip combined with Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous paradigm is a promising architecture for easy IP integration and utilization with multiple voltage levels. In this paper, a thermal-aware methodology for regular 3-D NoCs based on multiple voltage levels is proposed. Abstract
Electric motors represent the largest single load in most power systems. With continuing increase in nonlinear loads, the effects of harmonic contents of power systems on various components is becoming more important. This paper is concerned with the effect of power system harmonics and voltage unbalance on the useful life of electric motors. A simple equivalent circuit is used to calculate the additional heat losses caused by supply distortions. A lumped-parameter thermal network is proposed to calculate the resulting heat distribution within the machine. An Arrhenius chart is then used to estimate motor insulation remaining life. The proposed approach is used to determine the effect of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ilbeygi, Amirhosein (Author) ; Hakkakifard, Ali (Supervisor) ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, Siamak (Supervisor) ; Biglarian, Hassan (Co-Supervisor)
    Abstract
Ground-Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs) are efficient means of space heating and cooling. However, owing to their high installation costs, their development in societies has not grown as it should. Therefore, it is crucial to have a meticulous design of these systems. The first step in designing GSHPs is determining the ground and grout thermal properties. Thermal Response Tests (TRTs) are developed for this purpose. The previous methods of estimating the unknown thermal properties are either computationally inefficient or yield inaccurate estimates for the ground volumetric heat capacity, to which the mean fluid temperature has the slightest sensitivity among all thermal properties. Among previous...

Computational Homogenization of Inter-Facial Thermal Resistance in Heterogeneous Materials

    Abstract
The constitutive modeling of heterogeneous micro-structure of solids based on multi-scale theories has become the subject of intensive research. One of the most important problem at this scale is the interfacial effects of constituents. Investigation of thermal conduction in this area leads to a phenomenon known as Inter-facial Boundary resistance. The general reasons behind this phenomenon are imperfect contact interface and changing in energy carriers properties known as Kapitza resistance. A computational homogenization of conduction tensor by considering inter-facial resistance and effective factors on it, is proposed. In order to capture discontinuous field around this area and its...
