Improvement of Reverse Osmosis Membrane by Grafting Hydrophilic Hydrocarbon on Membrane Surface

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mortazavi, Sajad (Author) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor) ; Ramezani Saadat Abadi, Ahmad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study, surface modification of Thin-film composite (TFC) membranes was performed in order to enhancement of its performance and chlorine resistance. TFC membranes was prepared through the interfacial polymerization between m-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on the polysulphone support membrane and surface modification performed through redox initiated graft polymerization of acrylic amide followed by acrylic acid. The successful surface modification of TFC membranes was evident from attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), contact angle (θ), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Changes in...

Preparation of Suitable Membrane for NaOH Solution Enrichment

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Sheikholvaezin, Mohammad Naghi (Author) ; Musavi, Abbas (Supervisor) ; Bastani, Dariush (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Sodium Hydroxide production industry is among the largest chemical industries that annually produces 66 million tons worldwide. NaOH which is produced through electrochemical cells needs to be further enriched. The use of membrane technology as a substitute for conventional processes has been a point of interest. Thin film composite membrane is among favorable membrane because of its ability to be customized layer by layer individually. In this thesis, for the purpose of making an optimized membrane for NaOH enrichment, we studied the preparation conditions and witnessed that by increasing MPD from 1.5 %wt. to 4.5%wt. The flux experiences a minimum at 3.5%wt, which is the maximum for...

Synthesis and characterization of polyamide membrane for the separation of acetic acid from water using RO process

    , Article Membrane Water Treatment ; Volume 8, Issue 4 , 2017 , Pages 323-336 ; 20058624 (ISSN) Mirfarah, H ; Mousavi, S. A ; Mortazavi, S. S ; Sadeghi, M ; Bastani, D ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The main challenge in many applications of acetic acid is acid dehydration and its recovery from wastewater streams. Therefore, the performance of polyamide thin film composite is evaluated to separate acetic acid from water. To reach this goal, the formation of polyamide layer on polysulfone support membrane was investigated via interfacial polymerization (IP) of meta-phenylenediamine (MPD) in water with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) in hexane. Also, the effect of synthesis conditions, such as concentration of monomers and curing temperature on separation of acetic acid from water were investigated by reverse osmosis process. Moreover, the separation mechanism was discussed. The solute...

Fabrication of Appropriate Membrane for Treatment and Reuse of Grey Water

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Gholami, Mohammad (Author) ; Mousavi, Abbas (Supervisor) ; Kariminia, Hamidreza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this study preparation of polymeric membrane for grey water treatment is examined. Grey water is the wastewater that is produced by household activities such as baths, showers and sinks. These sources make 50 to 80 percent of total household wastewater. Because of low contamination of these kind of wastewater, they can be treated with Nanofiltration membrane process. Membrane used for treatment is thin composite polyamide membrane. This membrane is made with interfacial polymerization reaction of Piperazine and m-phenylenediamine as amine monomer and trimesoyl chloride as chloride acid monomer on a Polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane. In order to promote the flux, Polyethylene glycol is...

    Abstract
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a rapid-developing desalination technology; however, it suffers from inefficient energy consumption. To reduce energy consumption, in this study, reverse osmosis thin-film composite membrane (TFC) module was prepared and composed of m-phenylenediamine (MPD), graphene oxide, and 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl chloride (TMC) by interfacial polymerization on the surface of a polysulfone substrate. The graphene oxide was embedded in the mentioned thin-film composite by adding it to MPD aqueous solution to enhance permeation flux and, thus, reduce energy consumption. This study assessed the performance of the membrane using a lab-scale RO setup and evaluated permeability and...

Elastic Responses of a Transversely Isotropic Half-Space Reinforced by a Buried Extensible Membrane under Internal Loading

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahsavarian, Ali (Author) ; Eskandari, Morteza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, a homogeneous elastic half-space with transversely isotropic behavior, reinforced by an isotropic thin membrane is investigated under static loading with an analytical approach. The membrane is considered as an infinite plane with a thickness of negligible and buried at the arbitrary depth from the surface of the half-space, also its flexural strength is neglected and only the in-plane stiffness is considered for it. The reinforced half-space is investigated under several concentrated and distributed static loads, which are applied to the surface of the half-space or buried at the depth of the membrane. The membrane is first modeled as a three-dimensional elastic layer and...

Preparation of Thin-Film Nanocomposite Membranes Based on Metal-Organic Frameworks (Mofs) and Study of their Performance in Forward Osmosis (Fo) Process

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Bayrami, Arshad (Author) ; Bagherzadeh, Mojtaba (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The forward osmosis (FO) process is a high potential emerging membrane process in the seawater desalination and contaminated water treatment fields. One of the main challenges facing this process is the weak separation (high reverse solute flux, low water flux, and insufficient selectivity) and antifouling performances of its membranes. Various sections of this study focus on the development of FO membranes and their performance improvement. For this purpose, thin-film composite membranes with the same combination of polyethersulfone/polyamide (PES/PA) have been used to investigate the effect of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) introduction on their performance. The support layer in all cases...
