    , Article Transport in Porous Media ; Vol. 92, issue. 2 , March , 2012 , p. 357-372 ; ISSN: 1693913 Sadeghnejad, S ; Masihi, M ; Shojaei, A ; Pishvaie, M ; King, P. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The connectivity of high conductivity pathways in geological formations depend on the spatial distribution of geological heterogeneities that may appear on various length scales. Appropriate modeling of this is crucial within in hydrology and petroleum systems. The approach taken in this study is to use percolation theory to quantify the connectivity, hydraulic conductivity, and breakthrough time behavior between an injector and a producer within such systems. In particular, a three-dimensional overlapping sandbody model is considered which assumes that the geological formation can be split into either conductive flow units (i. e., good sands) or non-conductive units (i. e., poor sands). The...

    , Article International Journal of Sustainable Energy ; Vol. 33, issue. 2 , 2014 , pp. 448-460 ; ISSN: 14786451 Mahmoodi, E ; Jafari, A ; Schaffarczyk, A. P ; Keyhani, A ; Mahmoudi, J ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The blade element momentum (BEM) theory is based on the actuator disc (AD) model, which is probably the oldest analytical tool for analysing rotor performance. The BEM codes have very short processing times and high reliability. The problems of the analytical codes are well known to the researchers: the impossibility of describing inside the one-dimensional code the three-dimensional (3D) radial flows along the span-wise direction. In this work, the authors show how the 3D centrifugal pumping affects the BEM calculations of a wind turbine rotor. Actually to ascertain the accuracy of the analytical codes, the results are compared with rotor performance, blade loads and particle image...

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 17, Issue 5 A , 2010 , Pages 372-386 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Moslemi, H ; Khoei, A. R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the continuum damage mechanics model originally proposed by Lemaitre (Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology. 1985; 107: 83-89) is presented through an adaptive finite element method for three-dimensional ductile materials. The macro-crack initiation-propagation criterion is used based on the distribution of damage variable in the continuum damage model. The microcrack closure effect is incorporated to simulate the damage evolution more realistic. The Zienkiewicz-Zhu posteriori error estimator is employed in conjunction with a weighted Superconvergence Patch Recovery (SPR) technique at each patch to improve the accuracy of error estimation and data transfer process....

A physically-based three dimensional fracture network modeling technique

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 19, Issue 3 , 2012 , Pages 594-604 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Masihi, M ; Sobhani, M ; Al Ajmi, A. M ; Al Wahaibi, Y. M ; Khamis Al Wahaibi, T ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In poorly developed fractured rocks, the contribution of individual fracture on rock conductivity should be considered. However, due to the lack of data, a deterministic approach cannot be used. The conventional way to model discrete fractures is to use a Poisson process, with prescribed distribution, for fracture size and orientation. Recently, a stochastic approach, based on the idea that the elastic energy due to fractures follows a Boltzmann distribution, has been used to generate realizations of correlated fractures in two dimensions. The elastic energy function has been derived by applying the appropriate physical laws in an elastic medium. The resulting energy function has been used...

    , Article Particuology ; Volume 25 , 2016 , Pages 72-82 ; 16742001 (ISSN) Akhshik, S ; Behzad, M ; Rajabi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
We investigate the effect of particle shape on the transportation mechanism in well-drilling using a three-dimensional model that couples computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with the discrete element method (DEM). This numerical method allows us to incorporate the fluid-particle interactions (drag force, contact force, Saffman lift force, Magnus lift force, buoyancy force) using momentum exchange and the non-Newtonian behavior of the fluid. The interactions of particle-particle, particle-wall, and particle-drill pipe are taken into account with the Hertz-Mindlin model. We compare the transport of spheres with non-spherical particles (non-smooth sphere, disc, and cubic) constructed via the...

Analysis of a more realistic well representation during secondary recovery in 3-D continuum models

    , Article Computational Geosciences ; Volume 21, Issue 5-6 , 2017 , Pages 1035-1048 ; 14200597 (ISSN) Sadeghnejad, S ; Masihi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The effectiveness of secondary recovery methods in reservoir development studies depends on the knowledge about how fluid-carrying regions (i.e. good-quality rock types) are connected between injection and production wells. To estimate reservoir performance uncertainty, comprehensive simulations on many reservoir model realisations are necessary, which is very CPU consuming and time demanding. Alternatively, we can use much simpler and physically based methods such as percolation approach. Classic percolation assumes connectivity between opposite 2-D faces of a 3-D system; whereas, hydrocarbon production is achieved through active wells that are one-dimensional lines (e.g. vertical,...

    Abstract
In this work, hybrid of silica nanoparticles (NPs) with sulfonated copolymer has been prepared in order to improve the copolymer properties for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). Some tests are done to find the effectiveness of injecting fluid on Recovery Factor (RF), such as Contact Angle (CA), interfacial tension (IFT), inherent viscosity, and eventually Micro-Model (MM) flooding. In CA test, wettability alteration from Oil-Wet (OW) to Water-Wet (WW) is reached by sedimentation and adsorption of NPs on the rock slice. In addition, IFT reduction is obtained by increasing the NaCl concentration. The viscosity change is investigated for the hybrid and copolymer under simulated high-temperature oil...
