Reciprocity condition in synchronously time-periodic bianisotropic materials

    , Article Physical Review B ; Volume 106, Issue 21 , 2022 ; 24699950 (ISSN) Boshgazi, S ; Memarian, M ; Mehrany, K ; Rejaei, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    American Physical Society  2022
    Abstract
In this paper, a sufficient reciprocity condition for general time-periodic modulated bianisotropic media is extracted from first principles. Reciprocity of various cases of significant importance, including stationary bianisotropic media, time-varying (TV) isotropic media, TV anisotropic media, and TV bianisotropic media, are investigated using this condition. We prove that synchronous time modulation of stationary bianisotropic yet reciprocal media (chiral, pseudochiral, and achiral) does not lead to nonreciprocity, unless the modulation function breaks time reversal symmetry. This is in contrast to recently published research. The theoretical results are validated using in-house finite...

    Abstract
This paper investigates the influence of residual bow on the stability of a rotating system consisting of an unbalanced Jeffcott rotor with anisotropy and two nonlinear journal bearing supports. The motion equations of the rotor system are formulated and analyzed considering most common faults and features including coupling effects of unbalance, anisotropy and residual shaft bow, by applying Lagrangian dynamics and Floquet theory. Time varying system properties of stiffness and damping are introduced into the equations of motion affecting the rotor behavior, and the influence is studied with respect to the extent of the bearing nonlinearity and the rotor anisotropy. Increasing area of...

Time-varying dual accelerated gradient ascent: A fast network optimization algorithm

    Abstract
We propose a time-varying dual accelerated gradient method for minimizing the average of n strongly convex and smooth functions over a time-varying network with n nodes. We prove that the time-varying dual accelerated gradient ascent method converges at an R-linear rate with the time to reach an ϵ-neighborhood of the solution being of O([Formula presented]ln⁡[Formula presented]), where c is a constant depending on the graph and objective function parameters and M is a constant depending on the initial values. We test the proposed method on two classes of problems: L2-regularized least squares and logistic classification problems. For each class, we generate 1000 problems and use the...

A closed-form transfer function for sample and hold master slave sampling filter

    Abstract
A switched capacitor circuit frequently appears in literature in form of sample and hold or master-slave sampling filter. We call this block Sample and Hold Master-Slave Sampling Filter (SH-MSSF). Considering the time varying nature of this circuit it is difficult to predict its behavior, though it looks like a very simple circuit. So there exists no formula describing its function in all of its applications. In this brief, we present a closed-form transfer function, explaining the operation of SH-MSSF, based on state-space analysis. Then by interpolating an infinite number of such transfer functions a continuous-time formula is derived that can exactly model the behavior of this (Linear...

Prescribed-Time control for perturbed euler-lagrange systems with obstacle avoidance

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control ; Volume 67, Issue 7 , 2022 , Pages 3754-3761 ; 00189286 (ISSN) Shakouri, A ; Assadian, N ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
This article introduces a class of time-varying controllers for Euler-Lagrange systems such that the convergence occurs at an arbitrary finite time, independently of initial conditions, and free of chattering. The proposed controller is based on a mapping technique and is designed in two steps: First, a conventional (obstacle avoidance) asymptotically stable controller is specified for the nominal system; then, by a simple substitution, a prescribed-time (obstacle avoidance) controller is achievable for the perturbed system. It is proved that the proposed scheme is uniformly prescribed-time stable for unperturbed systems and prescribed-time attractive for perturbed systems as it rejects...

Time-varying formation tracking for noisy multi-agent systems with unknown leader trajectory

, Article Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Part I: Journal of Systems and Control Engineering ; Volume 236, Issue 7 , 2022 , Pages 1386-1399 ; 09596518 (ISSN) Zaeri Amirani, M ; Bigdeli, N ; Haeri, M ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this article, time-varying formation tracking problem for multi-agent systems is investigated. It is assumed the number of agents is changing and obstacles should be avoided along the trajectory. In addition, the tracking formation should be reached while the leader trajectory is unknown and communication data are noisy. To reach the desired formation tracking, first, a virtual leader is constructed using the local neighbouring data. Second, the reference signal is created based on the virtual leader and the leader data (which is available for some agents). The data fusion at this stage is done based on Kalman filtering to reduce the effect of communication noise. Third, an integral state...

    Abstract
We investigate the possibility of frequency conversion in time-varying metasurfaces, composed of graphene microribbon arrays (GMRAs) with time-periodic modulation of their conductivity. We present a quasi-static model for the interaction of light with a temporally modulated metasurface, as well as an accurate analytical treatment of the problem of time-varying GMRAs. Results coming from numerical simulations are also available. We provide corrections to a previous related proposal for frequency conversion and refute the possibility of attaining frequency shifts not equal to an integral multiple of modulation frequency. Contrary to the preceding results, our findings show that efficient...

Recycling forward and backward frequency-multiplexed modes in a waveguide coupled to phased time-perturbed microrings for low-footprint neuromorphic computing

    Abstract
Optical structures can serve as low-power high-capacity alternatives of electronic processors for more efficient neuromorphic computing, but can suffer from large footprints and weak scalability. In this work, properly phased time-perturbed microrings side-coupled to a waveguide are utilized to realize a compact processor for linear transformations. We build up a synthetic frequency dimension to provide sufficient degrees of freedom, where the linear time-varying structures enable the linear intermixing and transformation of frequency-multiplexed data. Moreover, non-reciprocal and asymmetric flow of data in the forward and backward modes, due to phasing of the perturbations, helped to build...

From asymmetrical transmitter to the nonreciprocal isolator using time-varying metasurfaces

    , Article Optical and Quantum Electronics ; Volume 54, Issue 5 , 2022 ; 03068919 (ISSN) Khorrami, Y ; Fathi, D ; Khavasi, A ; Rumpf, R. C ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
We present an emulation design method for converting asymmetrical transmitters to nonreciprocal isolators equipped with time-varying metasurfaces. To illustrate the model, we design a structure using a combination of the photonic crystal (PhC) and time-varying metasurface. Moreover, we propose a general approach for numerical analysis of the time-modulated proposed structure using the extension of the transfer matrix method (TMM) which consists of working through the device one layer at a time and calculating an overall transfer matrix including the time-variation of the permittivity and permeability in each layer. Also, we use an optimization algorithm that is less used in the field of...

On the prescribed-time attractivity and frozen-time eigenvalues of linear time-varying systems

    , Article Automatica ; Volume 140 , 2022 ; 00051098 (ISSN) Shakouri, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2022
    Abstract
A system is called prescribed-time attractive if its solution converges at an arbitrary user-defined finite time. In this note, necessary and sufficient conditions are developed for the prescribed-time attractivity of linear time-varying (LTV) systems. It is proved that the frozen-time eigenvalues of a prescribed-time attractive LTV system have negative real parts when the time is sufficiently close to the convergence moment. This result shows that the ubiquitous singularity problem of prescribed-time attractive LTV systems can be avoided without instability effects by switching to the corresponding frozen-time system at an appropriate time. Consequently, it is proved that the time-varying...

Stability analysis of parametric resonance in spar-buoy based on Floquet theory

    Abstract
Parametric resonance is a phenomenon caused by time-varying changes in the parameters of a system which may result in undesirable motion responses and instability. Floating bodies like ships and spar-buoys are prone to Mathieu instability mainly due to the instantaneous change of the metacentric height. With the fast-growing developments in Ocean Renewable Energy systems, spar-buoys are commonly used for wave energy convertors and floating wind turbines. Undesirable, unstable motions as a result of the parametric resonance can be problematic as it may cause inefficiency in operations and structural risk integrity. In this research, a new approach has been developed to investigate these...

Waves in linear time-varying dielectric media

    , Article 16th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation, EuCAP 2022, 27 March 2022 through 1 April 2022 ; 2022 ; 9788831299046 (ISBN) Sotoodehfar, A ; Mirmoosa, M. S ; Tretyakov, S. A ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, focusing on the frequency domain, we write the constitutive relation and the Helmholtz equation for linear, dispersive, and inhomogeneous time-varying media. Next, by assuming spatial homogeneity, we simplify the equations and explain how to calculate dispersion curves (the angular frequency with respect to the wave vector) for propagating waves. Furthermore, we show that under the simplifying assumption of instantaneous response, the developed general approach provides the same dispersion curves as reported earlier for the dispersion-less model of time-varying dielectric media. We believe that this study is important for investigations of wave phenomena in time-varying media,...

Finite-time stabilisation of a class of time-varying nonlinear systems by a mixed event-based and continuous-time strategy

    , Article International Journal of Systems Science ; Volume 53, Issue 3 , 2022 , Pages 526-537 ; 00207721 (ISSN) Ghazisaeedi, H.R ; Tavazoei, M. S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, a mixed event-triggered and continuous-time control method is proposed, which can guarantee finite-time stabilisation of the fixed point in a class of time-varying nonlinear systems. Benefiting from an event-triggered framework, which is constructed based on the indefinite Lyapunov theory, the communication/computation costs in the transient time can be reduced by using the proposed method. In a special case, this method is converted to a fully event-triggered control strategy for asymptotic stabilisation of the fixed point in the considered class of time-varying nonlinear systems. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by numerical simulations. © 2021 Informa UK...

A framework for prescribed-time control design via time-scale transformation

    Abstract
This letter presents a unified framework for the design of prescribed-time controllers under time-varying input and state constraints for normal-form unknown nonlinear systems with uncertain input gain. The proposed approach is based on a time-domain mapping method by which any infinite-time system can be corresponded to a prescribed-time system and vice versa. It is shown that the design of a constrained nonasymptotic prescribed-time controller can be reduced to the asymptotic control design for an associated constrained infinite-time system. Faà di Bruno's formula and Bell polynomials are used for a constructive representation of the associated infinite-time system. The presented results...

    Abstract
In this article, a novel cooperative secondary voltage/frequency control considering time-varying delays and noises in fading channels is presented for an autonomous alternating current (AC) voltage sourced-based converter (VSC)-based microgrid (MG), including inverter-interfaced distributed generations (DGs). Fading phenomenon makes complex random fluctuations on the voltage and frequency of every DG received from its neighbor DGs. In multi-agent cooperative systems, in addition to the total additive noise and time-variant delay, a multiplicative complex random variable is considered to model the main received signal and its replicas due to multipath propagation. The proposed...

A self-organizing multi-model ensemble for identification of nonlinear time-varying dynamics of aerial vehicles

    Abstract
This article presents a novel identification approach which can deal with nonlinear and time-varying characteristics of complex dynamic systems, especially an aerial vehicle in the entire flight envelope. A set of local sub-models are first developed at different operating points of the system, and subsequently a self-organizing multi-model ensemble is introduced to aggregate the outputs of the local models as a single model. The number of employed local models in the proposed multi-model ensemble is optimized using a novel self-organizing approach. Also, wavelet neural networks, which combine both the universal approximation property of neural networks and the wavelet decomposition...

    Abstract
The design of a novel Continuous Fractional-Order Nonsingular Terminal Sliding Mode controller is the focus of this study. Time Delay Estimation technique is incorporated into the controller. The proposed method is responsible for controlling the human knee joint neuromusculoskeletal model via Functional Electrical Stimulation. A second-order nonlinear model with time-varying coefficients is used for characterizing the FES-stimulated neuromusculoskeletal model. The presence of time-varying coefficients often complicates precise control of knee joint through FES and impairs the performance of conventional methods. To this end, the TDECFONTSM has been proposed consisting of three components, a...

Strong structural controllability of networks under time-invariant and time-varying topological perturbations

    Abstract
This article investigates the robustness of strong structural controllability for linear time-invariant and linear time-varying directed networks with respect to structural perturbations, including edge deletions and additions. In this direction, we introduce a new construct referred to as a perfect graph associated with a network with a given set of control nodes. The tight upper bounds on the number of edges that can be added to, or removed from a network, while ensuring strong structural controllability, are then derived. Moreover, we obtain a characterization of critical edge sets, the maximal sets of edges whose any subset can be respectively added to or removed from a network while...

Adaptive online prediction of operator position in teleoperation with unknown time-varying delay: simulation and experiments

    Abstract
One of the most important problems in teleoperation systems is time delay and packet loss in the communication channel, which can affect transparency and stability. One way to overcome the time delay effects in a teleoperation system is to predict the master-side motion. In this way, when data is received in the slave side, it will be considered as the current position of the master robot and, thus, complete transparency could be achieved. The majority of the previous works regarding operator position prediction have considered known and constant time delay in the system; however, in the real applications, time delay is unknown and variable. In this paper, an adaptive online prediction...
