Surface and mechanical properties of modified porous titanium scaffold

    , Article Surface and Coatings Technology ; Volume 315 , 2017 , Pages 61-66 ; 02578972 (ISSN) Khodaei, M ; Valanezhad, A ; Watanabe, I ; Yousefi, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The bioinertness makes surface treatments essential to improve the bioactivity of porous titanium scaffold, and surface treatment might affect their mechanical properties. So finding an optimum condition lying between bioactivity and mechanical properties seems to be curial. In this research, the effect of the time of the thermal oxidation at 600 °C on apatite formation and mechanical properties of the porous titanium scaffold was studied. The results of thin film X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy indicated that the surface of heat treated samples up to 480 min was mainly covered by rutile. Also, wettability measurement and in vitro apatite formation ability assessment indicated that...

Pure commercial titanium color anodizing and corrosion resistance

    , Article Journal of Materials Engineering and Performance ; Volume 20, Issue 9 , 2011 , Pages 1690-1696 ; 10599495 (ISSN) Karambakhsh, A ; Afshar, A ; Ghahramani, S ; Malekinejad, P ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In order to improve titanium corrosion behavior, we can increase the thickness of oxide layer on titanium surface during anodizing process and by electrochemistry. In this research, self-color anodizing of Ti in sulfuric acid was done, and anodizing layers were created in different colors. The highest value of chromaticity was 37.8 for the anodized sample in 10 V, and the lowest value was 8.6 at 15 V. The oxide layer thickness was calculated by optical method (light refraction). The anodic film thickness increased by increasing the anodizing voltage. The highest thickness of anodic film was 190 nm in sulfuric acid solution for the anodized sample in 80 V. Corrosion resistance of anodized Ti...

Modification of fretting fatigue behavior of AL7075-T6 alloy by the application of titanium coating using IBED technique and shot peening

    , Article Tribology International ; Volume 42, Issue 1 , 2009 , Pages 121-129 ; 0301679X (ISSN) Majzoobi, G. H ; Nemati, J ; Novin Rooz, A. J ; Farrahi, G. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this work, improvement in fretting fatigue life of AL7075-T6 has been investigated by titanium surface coating using ion-beam-enhanced deposition (IBED) technique and shot peening. From the experiments, the following conclusions were derived: (i) Shot peening increased the fretting fatigue life up to 350%. (ii) Titanium coating increased the fatigue life up to 100% with respect to virgin specimens for low working stresses, while it reduced the fatigue life at higher working stresses significantly. (iii) Titanium coating+shot peening increased the fatigue life up to 130% with respect to the virgin specimens for low working stresses, while it reduced the fatigue life at higher working...

    Abstract
The hydroxyapatite coating on metal implants is a suitable method to create a bioactive surface and to increase the bone-implant bonding strength. In this research, at first the titanium surface was treated with NaOH solutions ; 5N and 10N at 60°C for 24 h and 5N at 60°C for 24 h followed by heating at 600°C for 1 h. The samples were immersed in the simulated body fluid (SBF) for 28 days to generate a calcium phosphate coating on titanium substrates. The modified substrates and coatings were characterized using SEM and XRD. According to the results obtained in this work the concentration increase of the NaOH solution has influenced the grain boundaries, whereas the heat treatment at 600°C...
