    Abstract
Ultra-wideband (UWB) frequencies with low level of power spectral density, which is set by FCC standard, have long been utilized in many short range applications, namely sensor networks, indoor positioning and radar systems. As their name suggests, the ultra-wide bandwidth of this standard, covering frequencies from 3.1 to 10.6GHz, provides high data rate communications. Two of the most critical challenges toward UWB receiver design is narrow-band interference coexistence, including IEEE802.11a and jitter due to the very narrow width of the UWB pulse in time domain. General previously proposed solutions to receive these narrow pulses is based on correlation principle, which is very sensitive...

    Abstract
A new ultra wideband (UWB) pulse generator covering a-10 dB bandwidth of 2.4-4.6 GHz with a tunable center frequency of 5-5.6 GHz to mitigate coexistence issues of impulse radio UWB (IR-UWB) systems and IEEE802.11.a WLAN or other narrowband (NB) systems in 90 nm-CMOS technology is proposed. The UWB pulse is generated based on frequency up-conversion of the first derivative of the Gaussian pulse, which creates an adjustable null in the frequency spectrum. Simulation results show that employing the proposed pulse generator mitigates the mutual interference between UWB and WLAN systems, significantly. The proposed transmitter consists of a low frequency signal generator, an LC oscillator and a...

    Abstract
A new Ultra Wideband (UWB) pulse shape is proposed to mitigate coexistence issues of IEEE802.11.a WLAN and Impulse Radio UWB (IR-UWB) systems. The proposed method is applicable to the reduction of any given narrowband (NB) interference into UWB systems. This pulse shape is based on frequency up-converting of first derivative of Gaussian pulse which has an adjustable null in Power Spectral Density (PSD) depending on up-converting frequency. Both analytical and simulation results with an adaptive receiver show that an UWB system with interference from a WLAN has noticeable improved performance when using the proposed pulse in comparison with using conventional modulated Gaussian pulse

    Abstract
To evaluate the performance of the distributed medium access control layer of the emerging ultrawideband and 60-GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless personal area networks based on ECMA-368 and ECMA-387 standards, the first step is to determine the beacon period length (BPL) of the superframe in a given network. In this paper, we provide an analytical model for the probability mass function (PMF) of the BPL as a function of the network dimensions, number of beaconing devices, antenna beamwidth, and the transmission range of the devices. To enable devices with steerable directional antennas in the ECMA-387 standard to have simultaneous communications with neighbors in their different antenna...

    Abstract
A probabilistic method is developed here to model the beacon period length (BPL) defined in the ECMA-368 and ECMA-387 standards for the distributed reservation protocol. The model computes the probability mass function (PMF) of the BPL in a superframe which will be used in modeling of throughput, delay, fairness, power and other major distributed medium access control layer parameters of the emerging ultra wideband and 60- GHz millimeter wave wireless personal area networks. The model relates the PMF of the BPL to the network density, antenna beamwidth, and the transmission range of the devices assuming that the devices are distributed in an outdoor environment based on Two-dimensional...

    Abstract
This paper introduces a new array architecture, in which antenna elements are arranged in a spiral curve. The spiral array enhances ultra-wideband (UWB) pattern characteristics compared to alternative array geometries of similar elements, without requiring a complex feed network for frequency change compensation. A number of examples are illustrated to demonstrate the array capability in broadband array designs. It is revealed that for the same number of elements and curvature lengths, a spiral array has a wider radiation bandwidth than the corresponding circular and linear array antennas. In addition, it is also demonstrated that the spiral architecture discussed here can be best suited for...

    Abstract
Nowadays, ultra-wideband (UWB) communication systems are in focus because of their attractive features such as high capacity, low power consumption and robustness against fading. On the other hand, spectrally-encoded spread-time (SE/ST) systems with superior ability on interference suppression provide proper multiuser efficiency over UWB channels. Coherent SE/ST code division multiple access (CDMA) systems are widely addressed in the literature requiring accurate channel estimation and high implementation complexity. In this paper we propose multi-level SE/ST CDMA system with non-coherent detection and simple receiver structure. Our results demonstrate the effect of signal to noise ratio...

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications ; Volume 11, Issue 8 , 2012 , Pages 2958-2969 ; 15361276 (ISSN) Zeinalpour Yazdi, Z ; Nasiri Kenari, M ; Aazhang, B ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we present the bit error probability (BEP) of a relay network employing UWB links between its nodes. Since UWB systems can resolve many paths and are thus rich in multipath diversity, the use of the Rake diversity combining is very effective. However, because of the complexity, it is impractical in the scenarios with portable terminals or in the networks with multiple relays. Time-reversal technique, in which the transmitting nodes can do the pre-diversity filtering of UWB signal before transmission, is known as an approach to achieve the performance equivalent to the Rake combining without increasing the receiver complexity. The performance of such a network with simple...

    , Article Proceedings - IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband, 14 September 2011 through 16 September 2011, Bologna ; 2011 , Pages 12-15 ; 21626588 (ISSN) ; 9781457717642 (ISBN) Mohtashami, V ; Shishegar, A. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Site-specific ultrawideband propagation modeling involves dealing with frequency variations of the propagation mechanisms and antenna patterns in the ray tracing program. Typically, electromagnetic field calculations have to be performed in a lot of frequencies to accurately construct the frequency response of the channel at a receiving point. This imposes a heavy computational burden on ray tracing specially in calculating the coverage map or finding the statistics of channel parameters where the number of receiving locations is large. In this paper, the computational complexity of ray tracing in ultrawideband propagation modeling is reduced by using cubic B-spline interpolation. The...

    Abstract
Time reversal is a technique in which a signal is pre-filtered such that it focuses both in time and space. Spatial focusing reduces interference to other co-existing systems and temporal focusing concentrates the received power in a very short interval. Energy detector is a practical receiver for ultra-wideband (UWB) time reversed signals due to its low-complexity and low-cost implementation. However, selection of an optimum integration interval to minimize the bit error rate is a major problem. Weighted energy detection is an effective technique to overcome this problem and enhance the performance of energy detectors. However, this improvement is achieved at the expense of non-trivial...

    Abstract
The conventional theory of super regenerative systems (SRS) has been divided into distinct modes of operation and limiting assumptions. These assumptions make the analysis of these systems inaccurate for wide bandwidth applications. In this paper, a novel theory based on the analysis of time varying systems using Magnus expansion is proposed which unifies all modes of operation and formulates the system response with high accuracy for a wide range of practical applications. Therefore, the theory can be used for the design of systems with wider bandwidth and higher data rates. Using the proposed theory, it is possible to analytically describe the effects of the parasitic elements and inter...

    Abstract
An efficient ray tracing technique for channel modeling of an ultrawideband signal in 60 GHz band is introduced. In the usual method, field calculations at many frequencies must be done where has a high computational cost. We have introduced a novel method using Chebyshev polynomials interpolation to reduce the computational cost. Some propagation parameters such as gain and root mean square (RMS) delay spread are obtained and compared to the other method

    Abstract
In this paper a new IR-UWB pulse generator circuit is proposed which is capable of solving the coexistence problem of narrowband and ultra wideband communication systems. This is done by creating a notch in the PSD of the generated UWB signal and adjusting its center frequency at the frequency of the narrowband interference. Using a triangular pulse generator, a triangular signal is generated and applied to the proposed circuit which consists of three main function blocks including quadratic, exponential and differentiator circuits. A differential pair MOS transistors in sub threshold region is utilized in order to realize the exponential block. The circuit is designed using a 0.18-μm RF...

We use Gaussian quadrature numerical method to approximate the CF of interference component appeared in decision variable term. This technique permits to predict the system performance in different IEEE 802.15.4a defined...

We propose a fully analytical circuit model for the structure, and then the absorber is duly designed based on the impedance matching concept. As a result, normalized bandwidth of 99.5% is realized by the proposed absorbing structure in mid-infrared regime. Performing a numerical optimization algorithm, we could also reach to normalized bandwidth of 103%
