Electronic structure of some thymol derivatives correlated with the radical scavenging activity: Theoretical study

    , Article Food Chemistry ; Vol. 165, issue , Dec , 2014 , p. 451-459 Jebelli Javan, Ashkan ; Jebeli Javanb, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Molecules acting as antioxidants capable of scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) are of upmost importance in the living cell. Thymol derivatives exhibit various antioxidant activities and potential health benefits. Exploration of structure-radical scavenging activity (SAR) was approached with a wide range of thymol derivatives. To accomplish this task, the DPPH experimental assay along with quantum-chemical calculations were also employed for these compounds. By comparing the structural properties of the derivatives of interest, their antioxidant activity was explained by the formation of an intramolecular hydrogen bond and the presence of unsaturated double bond (–CHdouble bond; length...

    Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate separation performance of poly(ether-b-amide6) (Pebax1657)/glycerol triacetate (GTA) gel membranes for CO2 removal from H2, N2 and CH4. GTA as a low molecular weight and highly CO2-phill compound was added to membrane structure at various weight fractions, 20%, 40%, 60% and 80% of Pebax, to fabricate a new high solubility selective membrane with improved performance. Permeation of pure gases was studied at different temperatures from 25 to 65°C and pressures from 4 to 24bar and ideal selectivities were calculated. Results indicated enhancement in permeation for all tested gases. For example, at a pressure of 4bar and a temperature of 25°C, membrane...

Magnetic pH-responsive nanocarrier with long spacer length and high colloidal stability for controlled delivery of doxorubicin

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces B: Biointerfaces ; Vol. 116 , April , 2014 , pp. 49-54 ; ISSN: 09277765 Pourjavadi, A ; Hosseini, S. H ; Alizadeh, M ; Bennett, C ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
A novel magnetic nanocarrier with long spacer length and high colloidal stability has been prepared for effective delivery of doxorubicin (DOX). First, poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer was grown up onto the surface of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles to increase the loading amount of amine groups. Then, terminal amine groups were functionalized by polyethylene glycol dimethylester to increase the spacer length. Then anticancer drug DOX was covalently attached onto the system by hydrazone bond to forms a pH-sensitive nanocarrier. This system is designed to combine the advantage of magnetic targeting, high drug loading capacity, and controlled release

A novel technique to semi-quantitatively study the stability of emulsions and the kinetics of the coalescence under different dynamic conditions

    , Article Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects ; Vol. 460 , 2014 , pp. 327-332 ; ISSN: 09277757 Karbaschi, M ; Orr, R ; Bastani, D ; Javadi, A ; Lotfi, M ; Miller, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
The kinetics of coalescence is studied experimentally using a new technique for tracking the process in the bulk phase. For this aim, aqueous solutions of KSCN (colorless) and FeCl3 (light yellow) are used to make individual W/O emulsions. Any coalescence occurred between drops containing KSCN solution and those containing FeCl3 solution would combine these solutions. This leads to a reddish brown solution due to the formation of iron(III)thiocyanate. The intensity change of this red color with time represents the dynamics of coalescence occurring between drops of different emulsified aqueous droplets. The detector response to any changes in the system is recorded as a function of time. In...

Effect of gamma ray on poly(lactic acid)/poly(vinyl acetate-co-vinyl alcohol) blends as biodegradable food packaging films

    , Article Radiation Physics and Chemistry ; Vol. 96 , 2014 , pp. 12-18 ; ISSN: 0969806X Razavi, S. M ; Dadbin, S ; Frounchi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
Poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/poly(vinyl acetate-. co-vinyl alcohol) [P(VAc-. co-VA)] blends as new transparent film packaging materials were prepared at various blend compositions and different vinyl alcohol contents. The blends and pure PLA were irradiated by gamma rays to investigate the extent of changes in the packaging material during gamma ray sterilization process. The miscibility of the blends was dependent on the blend composition and vinyl alcohol content; gamma irradiation had little effect on the extent of miscibility. The glass transition temperature of pure PLA and PLA/P(VAc-. co-VA) miscible blends reduced after irradiation. On the other hand in PLA/P(VAc-. co-VA) immiscible...

    Abstract
Background For decades, contrast agents have been used to reduce longitudinal (T1) or transverse (T2) relaxation times. High toxicity of gadolinium-based contrast agents leads researchers to new T1 contrast agents. Manganese oxide (MnO) nanoparticle (NP) with the lower peril and good enough signal change ability has been offered as a new possibility for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods The synthesized NPs were investigated for physicochemical and biological properties by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope, dynamic light scattering (DLS), inductively coupled plasma, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and 3 T magnetic resonance...

    Abstract
Metabonomics and other "omic" fields are essential science in analytical chemistry. Modern analytical instruments such as proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) can provide the great quantity of analytical information. In order to assign unknown samples, chemometric methods recognition build classification model based on experimental data. Firstly, some current strategies regarding disease diagnosis are exhibited in metabonomic studies. Some diseases such as crohn's disease can be difficult to diagnose since its signs and symptoms may be similar to other medical problems or often mimic other symptoms. Applications of NMR and supervised pattern recognition in the field of metabonomics are...

    Abstract
Introduction: Proximal spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is one of the most significant neurodegenerative diseases amongst the autosomal-recessive genetic disorders which is caused by the absence of protein survival of motor neuron (SMN). A critical nucleotide difference in SMN2 compared to SMN1 gene leads to an inefficient protein. Hence, homozygous lack of SMN1 provides a progressive disease. Due to the high prevalence, up to now, several molecular diagnostic methods have been used which most of them are lengthy, expensive, and laborious. Methods: In the present study, we exploited a gold nanoprobe-based method for semi-quantitative SMN1 gene dosage analysis compared to SMN2. The assay was...

Integrated one-against-one classifiers as tools for virtual screening of compound databases: A case study with CNS inhibitors

    , Article Molecular Informatics ; Volume 32, Issue 8 , 2013 , Pages 742-753 ; 18681743 (ISSN) Jalali Heravi, M ; Mani-Varnosfaderani, A ; Valadkhani, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
A total of 21 833 inhibitors of the central nervous system (CNS) were collected from Binding-database and analyzed using discriminant analysis (DA) techniques. A combination of genetic algorithm and quadratic discriminant analysis (GA-QDA) was proposed as a tool for the classification of molecules based on their therapeutic targets and activities. The results indicated that the one-against-one (OAO) QDA classifiers correctly separate the molecules based on their therapeutic targets and are comparable with support vector machines. These classifiers help in charting the chemical space of the CNS inhibitors and finding specific subspaces occupied by particular classes of molecules. As a next...
