Design and Implementation of a Fault Detecting Algorithm for a High Voltage Underground Cable Using UHF Wireless Measuring Method

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Vasighzadeh Ansari, Arman (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the common problems in using high voltage network is the occurrence of partial electrical discharge in high voltage equipment such as cables. This problem may not be serious at first, but over time it can cause wear, corrosion, or reduction of equipment life, and eventually, if not prevented in a timely manner, can cause electrical sparks, larger problems, and possibly equipment and network become irreparable. On the one hand, due to very clear reasons, we need the voltage level to be high, and on the other hand, due to the application of high voltage level and the need to optimally design the insulation system to reduce their dimensions and construction costs, there will be the...

Equipment Hardening Strategies to Improve Electric Distribution System Resilience Against Wildfire

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Talebi, Amir Hossein (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The severe wildfires in California, Australia, Canada, and Iran have interrupted the power system operation, caused multiple blackouts, took many lives, and caused damages to power grid infrastructure to the extent of millions and billions of dollars. Most of the recent wildfires occur in the distribution system. Therefore, enhancing power system distribution resilience against wildfire is crucial. To this end, two groups of measures are proposed: the hardening of the power network and the operational measures. The past published papers mainly studied the resilience enhancement strategies against wildfire from an operational perspective. There is a considerable gap between the past works...

Hardening Strategies for Enhancing the Resilience of Electrical Distribution Networks against Earthquake

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Ahmadi, Mehdi (Author) ; Vakilian, Mehdi (Supervisor)
    Abstract
During natural disasters, especially an earthquake the distribution systems operation is severely affected and interrupted by facing many failures. More than 80% of these outages are due to failures in distribution Systems. Therefore, it is crucial to enhance the resilience of the distribution systems (DSs) against these disasters. However, nowadays, due to limitation of resources for investment in these networks, only the most efficient measures should be implemented. In this work, studying the recent earthquakes in different countries, we have tried to identify the fundamental causes of failure of important network equipment, including distribution substations equipment and network...

Efficient algorithms to accurately compute derating factors of digital circuits

    Abstract
Fast, accurate, and detailed Soft Error Rate (SER) estimation of digital circuits is essential for cost-efficient reliable design. A major step to accurately estimate a circuit SER is the computation of failure probability, which requires the computation of three derating factors, namely logical, electrical, and timing derating. The unified treatment of these derating factors is crucial to obtain accurate failure probability. Existing SER estimation techniques are either unscalable to large circuits or inaccurate due to lack of unified treatment of all derating factors. In this paper, we present fast and efficient algorithms to estimate SERs of circuit components in the presence of single...
