Design and Implementation of a Programmable VCO for DVB-H Application

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Alizadeh Arand, Saralah (Author) ; Medi, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Recent growth in wireless communications leads to higher demand for smaller and cheaper wireless products. This increasing demand for high speed wireless products and therefore development of new modulation techniques, results in higher sensitivity to phase deviations. This means that the voltage controlled oscillator or VCO circuit must has lower phase noise. VCO is an important part in Phase Lock Loop or PLL that has been used in most of transceivers. This thesis focuses on design of a Programmable VCO for DVB-H Application in 0.18um TSMC process. A VCO is an oscillator designed to be controlled in oscillation frequency by a voltage input. The frequency of oscillation is varied by the...

Clock and Data Recovery Circuit For High Speed Serial Communication

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mousavi, Hassan (Author) ; Hajsadeghi, Khosroo (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, A novel approach for ¼-rate clock Phase Detector (PD) structure for Phase Locked Loop (PLL)-based Clock and Data Recovery (CDR) is proposed. In this approach, the retimed data is generated within the circuit and no extra circuit is needed. Another advantage of this topology is that the error and reference signals are independent of delay time through gates and no extra replica circuit is needed to compensate the delay. This topology results in a lower power circuit and smaller area for high speed application compared to conventional topologies

Design of Clock and Data Recovery Circuits Inmulti Gb/s Range in CMOS Technology

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Jafarbeiki, Sara (Author) ; HajSadeghi, Khosrow (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Some applications need fast locking clock and data recovery circuits for example the circuits that operate in burst mode must lock to the data packets which are transmitting from different transmitters very quickly and in just a few bit times. In such applications open-loop clock and data recovery circuits are used because lock time in closed-loop clock and data recovery circuits is usually much longer.
In this thesis a new open loop clock and data recovery circuit based on injection locking method has been proposed. This circuit can be used in applications such as passive optical networks that need fast locking. In this architecture a super harmonic injection-locked frequency divider...

Hybrid Modeling and Control of DC-DC Series Resonant Converters for Applications of Wide Range Power

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Afshang, Hamid (Author) ; Tahami, Farzad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The subject of control and stabilization of dc-dc series resonant converter (SRC) is still a challenge in power electronics. The conventional controller design and stability analysis for this converter are based on the model which is derived using the sinusoidal approximation and averaging followed by linearization about an operating point. This model is not applicable to a SRC that operates below resonance especially in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) because the sinusoidal approximation is no longer acceptable. However, a SRC may be purposely designed to operate in DCM. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the stability analysis and controller design using a more sophisticated...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Fallah, Hamed (Author) ; Fakharzadeh Jahromi, Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis, a low-power low-phase-noise 28 GHz voltage-controlled oscillator for 5G applications is presented. The class-C structure which leads to the highest FoM is chosen eventually. In order to increase oscillation amplitude and reduce phase noise while preserving FoM, a high-frequency noise filter is presented. This filter which is based on a λ/8 microstrip transmission line has solved the conventional filter problems e.g. narrow bandwidth, coupling with oscillator inductor and practical implementation issues. The oscillator is designed, EM...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Kazari, Hessam (Author) ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
With the increasing penetration of renewable energies as distributed generation (DG) in power systems, technical problems arise in both distribution and transmission system level. Voltage rise is the main barrier for connection of DGs in rural areas, while excessive reactive power demand from transmission system is the major concern for Transmission System Operators (TSO). Here, a centralized control scheme based on the Smart Grid is proposed to reduce the impact on the transmission system voltages and improve its stability, while mitigating the voltage rise issue in the distribution network. Reactive power output of DGs, substation capacitors and tap setting of transmission transformer are...

Global Control of Hybrid Microgrids Using MIMO Control

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Mirmohammad Meiguni, Marzieh Sadat (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Given the growing advantage of exploiting renewable energy resources over fossil fuels and using distributed generation systems, microgrids seem to be the best solution for reaching the energy-efficient world of the future. Hybrid microgrids are the best options among all other types of microgrids because they make it possible to use AC and DC sources and loads together and at the same time. Since connecting AC and DC sections of a hybrid microgrid leads to the interaction between them, proper control of interlinking converter(s) is crucial for the reliable and stable operation of the entire microgrid. In this study, small signal model of a hybrid AC/DC microgrid consisting of static and...

This technique helps designers to obtain the great insight of how to decrease the output noise in oscillators. This method also can be used to derive the waveform of ISFs in time domain.Based on the features of our new technique and by presenting a general method to change the stationary noises to Cyclo-stationary ones, we suggest a step by step design guide which elucidates new ideas for designers to manipulate the oscillator parameters and...

Control of an Islanded Multi-DG Microgrid under Unbalanced and Nonlinear Loads Conditions

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Hamzeh, Mohsen (Author) ; Mokhtari, Hossein (Supervisor) ; Karimi, Houshang (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Nowadays, the use of distributed generation (DG) units and microgrid systems is mainly limited to their operation in the grid-connected mode. In the grid-connected mode, a microgrid including its loads and DG units is connected to the main grid at the point of common coupling (PCC). In this case, the main grid provides fixed voltage and frequency for the microgird and each DG unit regulates its power components based on the conventional dq-current control strategy. Autonomous (islanded) operation of a microgrid, however, is not as straightforward as its operation in the grid-connected mode, i.e., control and power management of an islanded microgrid is very difficult due to the stochastic...

, Article Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences ; Volume 28, Issue 5 , 2020 , Pages 2586-2601 Mehri, R ; Mokhtari, H ; Sharif University of Technology
    Turkiye Klinikleri  2020
    Abstract
Increase of nonlinear loads in industries has resulted in high levels of harmonic currents and consequently harmonic voltages in power networks. Harmonics have several negative effects such as higher energy losses and equipment life reduction. To reduce the levels of harmonics in power networks, different methods of harmonic suppression have been employed. The basic idea in all of these methods is to prevent harmonics from flowing into a power network at customer sides and the point of common coupling (PCC). Due to the costs, none of the existing mitigating methods result in a harmonic-free power system. The remaining harmonic currents, which rotate in a power network according to the system...
