    Abstract
Emission factors (EFs) are fundamental, necessary data for air pollution research and scenario implementation. With the vision of generating national EFs of the Iranian transportation system, a portable emission measurement system (PEMS) was used to develop the basic EFs for a statistically significant sample of Iranian gasoline-fueled privately owned light duty vehicles (LDVs) operated in Tehran. A smaller sample size of the same fleet was examined by chassis dynamometer (CD) bag emission measurement tests to quantify the systematic differences between the PEMS and CD methods. The selected fleet was tested over four different routes of uphill highways, flat highways, uphill urban streets,...

Real-time impulse noise suppression from images using an efficient weighted-average filtering

    , Article IEEE Signal Processing Letters ; Volume 22, Issue 8 , 2015 , Pages 1050-1054 ; 10709908 (ISSN) Hosseini, H ; Hessar, F ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this letter, we propose a method for real-time high density impulse noise suppression from images. In our method, we first apply an impulse detector to identify the corrupted pixels and then employ an innovative weighted-average filter to restore them. The filter takes the nearest neighboring interpolated image as the initial image and computes the weights according to the relative positions of the corrupted and uncorrupted pixels. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the best existing methods in both PSNR measure and visual quality and is quite suitable for real-time applications

    Abstract
Nowadays, the number of digital images has increased so that the management of this volume of data needs an efficient system for browsing, categorising and searching. Automatic image annotation is designed for assigning tags to images for more accurate retrieval. Non-negative matrix factorisation (NMF) is a traditional machine learning technique for decomposing a matrix into a set of basis and coefficients under the non-negative constraints. In this study, the authors propose a two-step algorithm for designing an automatic image annotation system that employs the NMF framework for its first step and a variant of K-nearest neighbourhood as its second step. In the first step, a new multimodal...

Compressed sensing and multiple image fusion: An information theoretic approach

, Article Iranian Conference on Machine Vision and Image Processing, MVIP ; 2013 , Pages 339-342 ; 21666776 (ISSN) ; 9781467361842 (ISBN) Keykhosravi, K ; Mashhadi, S ; Engineers (IEEE) Antennas and Propagation Society; The Institute of Electrical and Electronics ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
In this paper, we propose an information theoretic approach to fuse images compressed by compressed sensing (CS) techniques. The goal is to fuse multiple compressed images directly using measurements and reconstruct the final image only once. Since the reconstruction is the most expensive step, it would be a more economic method than separate reconstruction of each image. The proposed scheme is based on calculating the result using weighted average on the measurements of the inputs, where weights are calculated by information theoretic functions. The simulation results show that the final images produced by our method have higher quality than those produced by traditional methods, especially...

Determining a suitable location for a Sewage Treatment Plant using a new fuzzy weighted average (FWA) method based on left and right scores

    Abstract
Finding the most suitable location among some alternatives is one of the most important factors which could affect the whole success of the construction of a facility. The facility site selection is a multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) problem including both quantitative and qualitative criteria. Due to some difficulties in many real life cases, defining the exact values for MCDM problems is almost impractical and, it's preferable to use fuzzy values (fuzzy numbers) in this type of problems. In this study, we try to determine a suitable location for a Sewage Treatment Plant by using a new fuzzy weighted average (FWA) method. For this aim, ten different criteria is defined and then, by...

Distibuted human tracking in smart camera networks by adaptive particle filtering and data fusion

    , Article 2012 6th International Conference on Distributed Smart Cameras, ICDSC 2012, 30 October 2012 through 2 November 2012 ; November , 2012 ; 9781450317726 (ISBN) Rezaei, F ; Khalaj, B. H ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Human tracking is an essential step in many computer vision-based applications. As single view tracking may not be sufficiently robust and accurate, tracking based on multiple cameras has been widely considered in recent years. This paper presents a distributed human tracking method in a smart camera network and introduces a particle filter design based on Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) and color histogram. The proposed adaptive motion model also estimates the target speed from the history of its latest displacement and improves the robustness of the tracker by decreasing the probability of missing targets. In addition, a distributed data fusion method is proposed which fuses the...

Multidisciplinary optimization of a stiffened shell by genetic algorithm

    , Article Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology ; Volume 26, Issue 2 , February , 2012 , Pages 517-530 ; 1738494X (ISSN) Mehrabani, M. M ; Jafari, A. A ; Azadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Vibration analysis of simply supported rotating cross-ply laminated stiffened cylindrical shell is performed using an energy approach which includes variational and averaging method. The stiffeners include rings and stringers. The equations are obtained by Rayleigh-Ritz method and Sander's relations. To validate the present method, the results are compared to the results available in other literatures. A good adoption is observed in different type of results including isotropic shells, rotating laminated shells, stiffened isotropic shells and stiffened laminated shells. Then, the optimization of parameters due to shell and stiffeners is conducted by genetic algorithm (GA) method under weight...

Multi-Attribute decision making on Inter-Basin Water Transfer projects

    , Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 16, Issue 1 E , 2009 , Pages 73-80 ; 10263098 (ISSN) Zarghami, M ; Szidarovszky, F ; Ardakanian, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2009
    Abstract
One of the best ways to control water shortages in the central region of Iran is Inter-Basin Water Transfer (IBWT). Efficient decision making on this subject is, however, a real challenge for the water authorities in Iran. These decisions should include multiple attributes, model uncertainty and, also, the optimistic/pessimistic view of the decision makers. The Ordered Weighted Averaging (OWA) operator can be used as an efficient Multi-Attribute Decision Making (MADM) method. This paper will introduce a new method to obtain the order weights of this operator. The new method is based on a combination of fuzzy quantifiers and neat OWA operators. Fuzzy quantifiers are usually applied in soft...

Sensitivity analysis of the OWA operator

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Part B: Cybernetics ; Volume 38, Issue 2 , 2008 , Pages 547-552 ; 10834419 (ISSN) Zarghami, M ; Szidarovszky, F ; Ardakanian, R ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The successful design and application of the ordered weighted averaging (OWA) method as a decision-making tool depend on the efficient computation of its order weights. The most popular methods for determining the order weights are the fuzzy linguistic quantifiers approach and the minimal variability method, which give different behavior patterns for the OWA. These two methods will be first analyzed in detail by using sensitivity analysis on the outputs of the OWA with respect to the optimism degree of the decision maker, and then the two methods will be compared. The fuzzy linguistic quantifiers approach gives more information about the behavior of the OWA outputs in comparison to the...

A fuzzy-stochastic OWA model for robust multi-criteria decision making

    , Article Fuzzy Optimization and Decision Making ; Volume 7, Issue 1 , 2008 , Pages 1-15 ; 15684539 (ISSN) Zarghami, M ; Szidarovszky, F ; Ardakanian, R ; Sharif University of Technology
    2008
    Abstract
All realistic Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) problems face various kinds of uncertainty. Since the evaluations of alternatives with respect to the criteria are uncertain they will be assumed to have stochastic nature. To obtain the uncertain optimism degree of the decision maker fuzzy linguistic quantifiers will be used. Then a new approach for fuzzy-stochastic modeling of MCDM problems will be introduced by merging the stochastic and fuzzy approaches into the OWA operator. The results of the new approach, entitled FSOWA, give the expected value and the variance of the combined goodness measure for each alternative. Robust decision depends on the combined goodness measures of...
