A new Optimization Approach for Solving Well Placement Problem under Uncertainty Assessment
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Massihi, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Roosta Azad, Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
Determining the best location for new wells is a complex problem that depends on reservoir and fluid properties, well and surface equipment specifications, and economic criteria. Various approaches have been proposed for this problem. Among those, direct optimization using the simulator as the evaluation function, although accurate, is in most cases infeasible due to the number of simulations required. This study proposes a hybrid optimization technique (HGA) based on the genetic algorithm (GA) with helper functions based on the polytope algorithm and the neural network. Hybridization of the GA with these helper methods introduces hill-climbing into the stochastic search and also makes use...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Taghizadeh Manzari, Mehrdad (Supervisor) ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, Siamak (Supervisor) ; Seif, Mohammad Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Multilateral wells are relatively new alternatives in field development and because they can increase the productivity per well and reduce the cost of field development, they are rapidly replacing old methods. In order to predict the performance of well, three methods are usually used: Analytical methods which use closed-forms models, semi-analytical methods which entails line-source model and numerical methods which is based on techniques such as finite volume or finite difference. In this thesis, line-source model is extended from two dimensional forms to three dimensional forms in order to be used to optimize the path of multilateral wells. Optimization entails direct optimization...
Petroleum Production Design for Intelligent Wells to Produce From Several Oil Layers Using Single Tubing
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor) ; Aminshahidy, Babak (Supervisor)
Abstract
The development of an oil field plays an important role in the optimum production. In the past, several wells have been used in a multi layer reservoir to produce oil from each layer. It costs oil industry billions of dollars and the problem would be more severe in the offshore. Nowadays, one well can produce oil from different pay zones in a reservoir. In this type of well called smart or intelligent well, production tubing is in common between pay zones and some chokes are installed on the tubing to produce oil from different layers. The size of choke usually varies and can be controlled by an electrical system installed in the well. As each pay interval has different capacity in terms of...

Abstract
Smart wellsareunconventional wells with down-hole devices installed on their production tubing. Such wells allow us to continuouslymonitor flow rates, pressures, temperature and periodically adjust down-holevalves setting without any production intervention. This makes smart well technology to be considered as one of the most significantbreakthroughs in reservoir management technologies. So, modeling and simulating smart wellsautomated action represents a challenge in forecastingtheir performances. One of the easiest ways to model such wells is to transform theminto a multi-segment well with the ability tocontrol each segment independently. By using the commercial reservoir simulator,...
Reservoir Characterization and Parameter Estimation Using Ensemble Kalman Filter
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Pishvaei, Mahmood Reza (Supervisor) ; Bozorgmehri Boozarjmehri, Ramin (Supervisor)
Abstract
Management decisions, enhanced oil recovery, and reservoir development plans in petroleum industries are based on predictions by reservoir simulation. Due to uncertainties in model parameters or engineering assumptions, the simulation results are not accurate, while they are correct. For more accurate estimation of unknown production quantities, it is required to characterize the unknown parameters and its uncertainty. By using static data alone the result of characterization is unreliable and unsure, therefore dynamic data use practically. In reservoir engineering literature, this is called “History Matching”.The ensemble Kalman filter is an optimal recursive data processing algorithm based...

Modeling of Ultrasonic Effect on Stimulation of Production well
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ramazani Sa’adat Abadi, Ahmad (Supervisor) ; Jamshidi, Saeid (Supervisor)
Abstract
Near wellbore formation damage is caused additional pressure drop around the wellbore and therefore decreased the oil or gas productivity of the well. The usual methods for removal of these damages are acidizing and hydraulic fracturing which have operational limitations in addition to high costs. Thus the researchers are motivated to find new methods and technologies specially the use of mechanical waves for well stimulation purposes.Ultrasonic waves have been extensively used in many industrial applications including clean devices, pipes and vessels. A clear extension of this usage is the removal of wellbore contaminants by exposing it to high-power ultrasonic waves. Although several...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Taghizadeh Manzari, Mehrdad (Supervisor)
Abstract
In this article, we investigate the transient pressure response and production rate of horizontal wells in a dual porosity-dual permeability naturally fractured reservoir.First, the point source solution is derived in Laplace transform space and then pressure distribution and horizontal well response is obtained using the principle of superposition. In our model, despite of dual porosity model, matrix system is directly connected to horizontal wellbore as well as fracture system and has an influence on type curves characteristics. We also showed that type curves characteristics are affected by horizontal well length, well eccentricity, external boundary conditions, permeability and storavity...
Sprue-well Design Optimization by Means of Computer Simulation and Experimental Tests
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Tavakoli, Rouhollah (Supervisor) ; Davami, Parviz (Co-Advisor)
Abstract
In many casting experiments, a well is used in the bottom of downsprue, which causes smooth flow in the runner. When the well is not properly designed, sand erosion happens in the runner and some oxide films and gaseous trap within the melt. These oxide films enter into the cast and decrease its strength and fatigue resistance. In addition, the gaseous trapped in the melt turn into solidification voids within the casting part which deteriorate its mechanical properties. The purpose of this research is to enhance casting efficiency by eliminating the mentioned defects. Modified design of sprue-well is proposed by the means of simulation with ProCAST software. Effective variables considered...
Dynamic Optimization of Smart Oil Well Using Model Predictive Control
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Pishvaie, Mahmoud Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
In recent years, due to the development of smart wells, optimization of waterflooding by injection/production rate control has receivedsome interests. We can postpone breakthrough time and increase the sweep efficiency by using inflow control valves (ICV). Due to complexity of reservoirs, existence of constraints and numerous influencing parameters, we need a robust and suitable optimization approach to overcome such problems. In this thesis, model predictive control (MPC) is chosen to be our optimization approach. MPC is suitable for constrained multi variable functions. Genetic algorithm is was chosenas optimizer. Eclipse reservoir simulator was used for reservoir simulation. Eclipse input...
Multi-Objective Optimization in Cost, Time and Quality Trade-off in Projects with Quality Obtained by Locally Linear Neuro Fuzzy Networks Case Study: Well Drilling Projects
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Akhavan Niaki, Taghi (Supervisor)
Abstract
A common decision in project management is the selection of contractors to simultaneously optimize three objectives of the project’s triangle. This issue becomes more important if there is more monetary value involved or there is limited number of capable contractors. In project planning, there is numerous choices for tasks; each with specific time, cost and quality. There is no trade-off problem, if one of the choices has the best time, cost, and quality, simultaneously. However, as these criteria do not generally work in a unique direction, it makes the selection decision difficult. A contractor who performs the projects on time may have higher cost and lower quality. Given that there is a...
Development of a Three Layer Model for Simulating Transient Behavior Cutting Transport in Extended-reach Well
, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology ; Behzad, Mehdi (Supervisor)
Abstract
A major concern in directional well drilling is the transport mechanism of cuttings by drilling fluid. This thesis describes the effect of angular velocity and postbuckled vibrations of drillstring on cuttings transport in a directional well drilling. The analysis proceeds in two stages. First, a finite element model is used to predict the dynamic behavior of postbuckled drillstring inside a directional well. Second, a coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics and Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) approach to simulate the cuttings transport considering the dynamic collision process. In the combined computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method (CFD-DEM), the fluid phase is treated...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ghotbi, Siroos (Supervisor)
Abstract
Intelligent control or management of well or reservoir is a method which is used in order to optimize the production for increasing recovery factor so that the minimum damage or reduction of pressure occurs during production lifetime. Azar oilfield has 17 wells and the production from this field isn't started. Thereupon designing a suitable well completion model and a control algorithm to optimize the production for the first two years of production is necessary and indispensable. For this purpose, by collecting basic information and their analysis (for example pressure, temperature, production rate, the type and amount of produced fluids), designing of downhole installations and modeling...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Pak, Ali (Supervisor)
Abstract
Sand production in petroleum industry is a phenomenon of solid particles being produced together with reservoir fluid. This phenomenon is costing industry billions of dollars every year. Corrosion of the pipelines and other instruments, sand-oil separation cost, possible wellbore choke and repeated shut-in and clean-up of the wellbore are some of examples of the costs. On the other hand, a controlled sanding or even sand production invocation has proved to be very effective in increasing production rate, especially in heavy oil recovery, asphalt wells and low PI wells. Discovering the best sand controlling procedure in oil extracting wells, parameters that have the most important effects on...

Abstract
Wellbore storage effect is one of the biggest problems of petroleum engineers in analyzing the reservoir properties. In this phenomenon, at the beginning time of production from a reservoir, the fluid is initially produced from the well and not from the reservoir. Due to this effect, the pressures are distorted and could not be used in reservoir analysis. In this thesis the wellbore storage effect would be removed in naturally fractured reservoirs using deconvolution method. Using this method the range of data used could be increased. In this method special techniques are used in order to determine reservoir behaviour.

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shad, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Today due to increasing demand of using energy and petroleum products, finding optimum ways to produce more oil and gas in a way which petroleum reservoirs faces less pressure drop is very necessary. Therefore, petroleum engineers face multiphase flow proportionally more than other issues. So, they have to comprehend this issue in a complete manner in order to discover the best practical ways for maximum utilization. Researchers in different ways tried to model multiphase flow, but many of provided models are so complicated and sometimes have low accuracy. In this project we tried to present a model that in simplicity has high accuracy and works in a way that apperceiving it, is very...
Experimental Study of Formation Damage Reduction during Drilling of Horizontal Wells Using Nanoparticles
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Ghazanfari, Mohammad Hossein (Supervisor)
Abstract
One the basic challenges during drilling of both vertical and horizontal wellbores is due to mud filtrate invasion into the formation. Addition of nanoparticles to composition of drilling fluid has been recognized as a measure of control and reduction of filtrate invasion. Despite notable advances in formulation of nano-enhanced drilling fluids, effects of surface wettability of nanoparticles on their performance have not been studied with any precision. Moreover, return permeability of a grain packed porous media after extreme invasion by mud filtrate has not been experimentally measured in a radial system, yet. The last but not least, Generation and development of mud cake opposite the...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Sahimi, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Massihi, Mohsen (Supervisor) ; Jafari, Gholam Reza (Supervisor)
Abstract
One of the main challenges in characterization and simulation of larg scale porous media is spatial heterogeneity and variability of porous media properties such as porosity, density, and lithology at different scales. These information can be achieved at different scale from coring, well logging or seismic data. Well logs are an efficient way to obtain rock and fluid properties of geological patterns specially water resources and hydrocarbon reservoirs. One of the characteristics of geophysical well logs is their complex behavior which seems to imply a multifractal nature. In this study we investigate multifractality and presence of long range correlations in petrophysical well log data such...
Simulation Study of Inflow Control Device
, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology ; Shad, Saeed (Supervisor)
Abstract
Optimizing and improving the design of wells will have significant impact on any recovery method. As for horizontal wells, despite the fact that horizontal wells improve reservoir access, they suffer from significant pressure loss as well as limited flow control locations and flow control and management. In addition, reservoir quality varies along the length of the well and in the reservoir. This will add further complexity and challenge in well control and production optimization. The design of completions plays a significant role in improving the productivity of a well as well as the life of the reservoir. Intelligent or smart completions can be used to monitor, evaluate and manage the...
