    Abstract
    This letter proposes an analytic framework for achieving an optimal solution for phasor measurement unit (PMU) placement problem. The proposed technique is on the basis of the cost/benefit analysis while long-term economic aspects and existing technical issues are simultaneously accounted for. More deployment of PMU devices would result in more reliable and secure electricity services. The reduction of system risk cost is hence recognized as the benefit associated with the development of wide-area measurement system (WAMS).     Probabilistic analyses of a wide-area measurement system (WAMS) would require equivalent reliability models for its components which include phasor measurement units (PMUs). In this paper, the reliability modeling of PMU is proposed and the proposed model is extended to consider options for the PMU hardware. The Markov process is employed to analyze the proposed model and to present an equivalent two-state model of PMUs.     This study presents a novel method for fault location of transmission lines by multiple fault current measurements. In contrast to conventional methods, it is proposed to utilise several current measurements, which may be far from the faulted line. The circuit equations of the network are used to express each fault current as a function of fault location. Fault location is then estimated using a least-squares estimation technique. To achieve a robust estimation of fault location, statistical hypotheses-testing is employed for identifying erroneous measurements. This paper presents a new online voltage security assessment method based on wide-area measurements and decision-tree algorithm.     In this paper, a wide area measurement, centralized, load frequency control using model predictive control (MPC) is presented for multi-area power systems. A multivariable constrained MPC was used to calculate optimal control actions including generation rate constraints. To alleviate computational effort and to reduce numerical problems, particularly in large prediction horizon, an exponentially weighted functional MPC was employed.     This paper presents a method for the optimal restoration planning based on Wide Area Measurement System (WAMS). This method uses observability analysis and Power Transfer Distribution Factor (PTDF) concept. The PTDF concept is applied to decrease the overvoltages caused by energizing transmission lines with lightly load.     This paper presents a novel approach for small signal stability assessment of a multi-machine system using only synchronized Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) data. The proposed method does not need any information about the generators, network configuration or line impedances. By installing one PMU on each generator bus and using classical model for generator, all of the network and generators parameters needed for small signal stability analysis are estimated using the ambient data registered in the PMUs.
