, Article IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid ; Vol. 5, issue. 1 , 2014 , p. 130-138 ; ISSN: 19493053 ; Fotuhi-Firuzabad, M ; Rashidinejad, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
As a matter of course, the unprecedented ascending penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), mainly harvesting renewable energies (REs), is concomitant with environmentally friendly concerns. This type of energy resources are innately uncertain and bring about more uncertainties in the power system, consequently, necessitates probabilistic analyses of the system performance. Moreover, the uncertain parameters may have a considerable level of correlation to each other, in addition to their uncertainties. The two point estimation method (2PEM) is recognized as an appropriate probabilistic method in small scale or even medium scale problems. This paper develops a new methodology for...

Low voltage ride-through capability improvement of DFIG-based wind turbines under unbalanced voltage dips
, Article International Journal of Electrical Power and Energy Systems ; Vol. 60,Issue , 2014 , pp. 82-95 ; ISSN: 01420615 ; Parniani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
This paper proposes a competent and effective scheme to enhance the ride-through capability of DFIG-based wind turbines under unbalanced voltage dip conditions. The proposed method is realized through joint use of the rotor-side converter control and a three-phase stator damping resistor (SDR) placed in series with the stator windings. By means of an asymmetrical SDR idea, during the unbalanced voltage dip the SDR resistors are activated only in phase(s) experiencing low voltage. Then, the rotor current is controlled such that no unbalance voltage appears on the stator voltage. The proposed ride-through approach limits the peak values of the rotor inrush current, electromagnetic torque and...
Low voltage ride-through of DFIG and brushless DFIG: Similarities and differences
, Article Electric Power Systems Research ; Vol. 110 , May , 2014 , p. 64-72 ; ISSN: 03787796 ; Tavner, P ; McMahon, R ; Oraee, H ; Zolghadri, M. R ; Shao, S ; Abdi, E ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The brushless doubly fed induction generator (BDFIG) has been proposed as a viable alternative in wind turbines to the commonly used doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). The BDFIG retains the benefits of the DFIG, i.e. variable speed operation with a partially rated converter, but without the use of brush gear and slip rings, thereby conferring enhanced reliability. As low voltage ride-through (LVRT) performance of the DFIG-based wind turbine is well understood, this paper aims to analyze LVRT behavior of the BDFIG-based wind turbine in a similar way. In order to achieve this goal, the equivalence between their two-axis model parameters is investigated. The variation of flux linkages,...
A new correlation on the MEXICO experiment using a 3D enhanced blade element momentum technique
, Article International Journal of Sustainable Energy ; Vol. 33, issue. 2 , 2014 , pp. 448-460 ; ISSN: 14786451 ; Jafari, A ; Schaffarczyk, A. P ; Keyhani, A ; Mahmoudi, J ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The blade element momentum (BEM) theory is based on the actuator disc (AD) model, which is probably the oldest analytical tool for analysing rotor performance. The BEM codes have very short processing times and high reliability. The problems of the analytical codes are well known to the researchers: the impossibility of describing inside the one-dimensional code the three-dimensional (3D) radial flows along the span-wise direction. In this work, the authors show how the 3D centrifugal pumping affects the BEM calculations of a wind turbine rotor. Actually to ascertain the accuracy of the analytical codes, the results are compared with rotor performance, blade loads and particle image...

, Article Sustainable Energy Technologies and Assessments ; Vol. 7 , September , 2014 , pp. 265-278 ; ISSN: 22131388 ; Rezaei Mirghaed, M ; Roshandel, R ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
The present study was aimed at performance and energy analysis of a hybrid wind-hydrogen power system. Such system consists of wind turbines, batteries for the short time energy storage, electrolyzer, fuel cell and hydrogen tank for long time energy storage. The proposed configuration is used to supply energy demand of a region with discrete seasonal wind speed regime. Temporary wind energy profiles restrict using batteries for electricity storage as they lose much electrical stored energy for the long time. Based on direct wind turbine usage, batteries and hydrogen storage, different energy supply strategies are introduced and analyzed to power the household electricity demand. The energy...

, Article IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics ; Vol. 61, issue. 4 , October , 2014 , PP. 1710-1721 ; ISSN: 02780046 ; Oraee, H ; McMahon, R. A ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In view of its special features, the brushless doubly fed induction generator (BDFIG) shows high potentials to be employed as a variable-speed drive or wind generator. However, the machine suffers from low efficiency and power factor and also high level of noise and vibration due to spatial harmonics. These harmonics arise mainly from rotor winding configuration, slotting effects, and saturation. In this paper, analytical equations are derived for spatial harmonics and their effects on leakage flux, additional loss, noise, and vibration. Using the derived equations and an electromagnetic-thermal model, a simple design procedure is presented, while the design variables are selected based on...

Dynamic behavior of a tension leg platform offshore wind turbine under environmental loads
, Article Scientia Iranica ; Vol. 21, issue. 3 , 2014 , pp. 480-491 ; ISSN : 1026-3098 ; Abbaspour, M ; Nasiri, R. M ; Sharif University of Technology
Abstract
In order to evaluate the dynamic behavior of floating offshore wind turbines, the authors consider two approaches. A numerical method is used to investigate Tension Leg Platform (TLP) offshore wind turbine response behavior under a parked condition. This code considers nonlinearities due to changes in the tension of tethers. The off-diagonal components of stiffness, damping and mass matrices are considered to calculate coupling. This code solves the nonlinear equation of motion at each time step. However, in order to validate the data generated by the code, a scaled-down model was fully tested in the marine laboratory. The importance of these series of experiments is due to the fact that...
Robustness investigation of the linear multi-variable control technique for power management of DFIG wind turbines
, Article International Journal of Advanced Mechatronic Systems ; Volume 5, Issue 1 , 2013 , Pages 37-46 ; 17568412 (ISSN) ; Banazadeh, A ; Sharif University of Technology

Abstract
Variable speed wind turbines are widely used in the modern power industry. These turbines that are usually driven by doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) contain two groups of controlling variables; mechanical variables like pitch angle and electrical variables like rotor voltage. During the turbine operation, with variable wind velocity, power must be managed in two regimes; power optimisation and power limitation. In the current research, initially a non-linear simulation, based on the general wind turbine dynamic model is presented. Then, the desired controllers for both pitch angle and generator voltage components are constructed. After designing the controller, in order to...

Abstract
In this paper the direct power control methods of doubly fed induction generator in wind turbine applications are studied. In the methods under study, the proper voltage space vector of the rotor side converter is selected using a switching table which is derived from flux position and the difference between the measured and reference stator active and reactive powers. Various simulations are performed in Matlab/Simulink software on a DFIG system in order to investigate the dynamic performance and robustness of the proposed control methods against machine internal parameters variations

Effect of leading-edge roughness on boundary layer transition of an oscillating airfoil
, Article Scientia Iranica ; Volume 20, Issue 3 , 2013 , Pages 508-515 ; 10263098 (ISSN) ; Soltani, M. R ; Sharif University of Technology
2013
Abstract
A series of experiments were conducted to study the effect of leading-edge roughness on the state of the boundary layer of a wind turbine blade section using multiple hot-film sensors. The experiments involved static and dynamic tests, where airfoil motion was of plunging type oscillation. The application of surface grit roughness simulates surface irregularities that occur on the wind turbine blades. The measurements showed that increasing the angle of attack results in movement of transition locations toward the leading edge. Surface roughness moved the transition point toward the leading edge and caused early trailing edge turbulent separation, which resulted in reducing the effectiveness...

Abstract
This paper presents a method to maximize the output power of a DFIG wind turbine. In this method, an optimization technique based on mathematical analysis has been used. The modeling of DFIG is performed using MATLAB. To evaluate the maximum output power of a DFIG, detailed expressions for output power and losses are derived as functions of generator slip, the magnitude and phase angle of rotor excitation voltage in various wind velocities. The outcomes of this method demonstrate that maximum output power of a DFIG wind turbine do not happen in the maximum input power (the mechanical power of wind turbine)
