For dynamic modeling of soil slopes and analysis of buried pipelines, a Finite-Element-based software, ABAQUS was utilized. In this regard, first the numerical model was calibrated and verified based on the results obtained by physical shaking-table tests on a soil slope. Afterwards, a comparison was made between the results of numerical models and some...

Money, Economic Order & The Problem of Moral Responsibility

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahrabi Farahani, Sajjad (Author) ; Taqhavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In the history of philosophy, the discussion of moral responsibility is tied to "Free Will" metaphysical controversies. Philosophers generally expect that people have "alternative possibilities" -that require them not to be bound to a deterministic situation- or if they don't have such possibilities, at least be able to "control" their actions, and if they don't know all aspects of what they do, at least not to be in ignorance about that, according to Aristotle. In the case of having such minimal possibilities, it is that one can be considered morally responsible for his or her actions. This broad conception of moral responsibility can be traced from Aristotle's discussions in the...

    Abstract
With the increasing use of the Internet, we are witnessing the exchange of gigabytes of text in cyberspace. Cyberspace makes it possible for individuals to hide their true identity and enter this space with an spurious one. Abuses that occur in online communities due to the use of unknown identities, reduce confidence in this type of communication and create many challenges in this area. Hence the importance of maintaining the security of the space, controling the user-generated content and identifying the authors of texts increases day by day. In this Research we have presented an approach to author identification. This approach is based on modeling the style of the authors on the basis of...

Tipping Cascades in Complex Networks: Dynamics and Control

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Shahrabi, Ali (Author) ; Rahimi Tabar, Mohammad Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Tipping points occur in diverse systems in various disciplines such as ecology, climate science, economy, sociology, and engineering. Critical thresholds in system parameters or state variables at which a tiny perturbation can lead to a qualitative change in the system exist in many subsystems in complex systems. These thresholds are called tipping points, and these subsystems are called tipping elements. Additionally, many systems with tipping points can be modeled as networks of coupled multistable subsystems. Domino-like tippings are called tipping cascades. Considering that these tipping cascades are primarily unprecedented, it is essential to study the dynamics and control of these...

A No-Wait Flowshop Scheduling Problem with Sequence Dependent Setup Time

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Arab Ameri, Sedighe (Author) ; Salmasi, Nasser (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research a no-wait flowshop sequence dependent setup time scheduling problem with weighted earliness-tardiness penalties as the criterion (F_m |nwt,S_ijk |∑▒〖w_j^' E_j+w_j^" T_j 〗) is investigated. It is assumed that n jobs are assigned to a flowshop with m machines. The jobs are not allowed to wait between two successive machines according to no-wait requirement. Moreover each machine needs a setup time before processing a new job. The value of this setup time is dependent on the previous processed job on that machine.
A mixed integer linear programming model is proposed to solve the problem. As the problem is shown to be strongly NP-hard, a particle swarm optimization (PSO)...

    , Article IET Signal Processing ; Volume 11, Issue 6 , 2017 , Pages 721-726 ; 17519675 (ISSN) Boloursaz Mashhadi, M ; Salarieh, N ; Shahrabi Farahani, E ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
Institution of Engineering and Technology  2017
    Abstract
The authors propose asynchronous level crossing (LC) A/D converters for low redundancy voice sampling. They propose to utilise the family of iterative methods with adaptive thresholding (IMAT) for reconstructing voice from non-uniform LC and adaptive LC (ALC) samples thereby promoting sparsity. The authors modify the basic IMAT algorithm and propose the iterative method with adaptive thresholding for level crossing (IMATLC) algorithm for improved reconstruction performance. To this end, the authors analytically derive the basic IMAT algorithm by applying the gradient descent and gradient projection optimisation techniques to the problem of square error minimisation subjected to sparsity. The...

    , Article International Journal of Communication Systems ; Volume 32, Issue 8 , 2019 ; 10745351 (ISSN) Ameri, M. H ; Delavar, M ; Mohajeri, J ; Sharif University of Technology
John Wiley and Sons Ltd  2019
    Abstract
Many smart grid applications need broadcast communications. Because of the critical role of the broadcasted messages in these applications, their authentication is very important to prevent message forgery attacks. Smart grid consists of plenty of low-resource devices such as smart meters or phasor measurement units (PMUs) that are located in physically unprotected environments. Therefore, the storage and computational constraints of these devices as well as their security against physical attacks must be considered in designing broadcast authentication schemes. In this paper, we consider two communication models based on the resources of the broadcasters and receivers and propose a physical...

Energy and exergy analyses of a spark-ignition engine

    , Article International Journal of Exergy ; Volume 7, Issue 5 , 2010 , Pages 547-563 ; 17428297 (ISSN) Ameri, M ; Kiaahmadi, F ; Khanaki, M ; Nazoktabar, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2010
    Abstract
In this paper, the performance of an internal combustion engine is evaluated at the steady-state condition by application of energy and exergy analysis using the experimental test results. The energy and exergy balances are calculated at different engine speeds. The results show that the heat rejection of energy and exergy flow increases with increasing engine speed. The exergy efficiencies are slightly higher than the corresponding energy efficiencies. The results of this study have revealed that the most important source of the system inefficiency is the destruction of exergy by irreversible processes, mostly by the combustion. One can conclude that the use of a combined energy and exergy...

Influence of monoethanolamine on thermal stability of starch in water based drilling fluid system

    , Article Petroleum Exploration and Development ; Volume 45, Issue 1 , February , 2018 , Pages 167-171 ; 18763804 (ISSN) Sharif Nik, M. A ; Ameri Shahrabi, M. J ; Heidari, H ; Valizadeh, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier B.V  2018
    Abstract
To improve the thermal stability of starch in water-based drilling fluid, monoethanolamine (MEA) was added, and the effect was investigated by laboratory experiment. The experimental results show that the addition of monoethanolamine (MEA) increases the apparent viscosity, plastic viscosity, dynamic shear force, and static shear force of the drilling fluid, and reduces the filtration rate of drilling fluid and thickness of mud cake apparently. By creating hydrogen bonds with starch polymer, the monoethanolamine can prevent hydrolysis of starch at high temperature. Starch, as a natural polymer, is able to improve the rheological properties and reduce filtration of drilling fluid, but it works...
