Numerical Study of Film Cooling in a Space Thruster

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Madani, Mohammad Reza (Author) ; Mardani, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In high-performance liquid fuel motors and space thrusters, the combustion chamber and nozzle walls are in contact with the gases caused by high temperature and pressure combustion, making severe thermal loads on the walls. Therefore, these systems require cooling mechanisms. The most common way of cooling in space thrusters is film cooling. This study is a numerical simulation of film cooling in the liquid fuel space thrusters. Numerical and empirical studies have been reviewed in this area and evaluated while conducting studies and results to select an appropriate model for ongoing project studies. Along this path, various fuel and oxidizing thrusters, including oxygen and hydrogen,...

    Abstract
The recent breakthroughs in the lab-on-a-chip technology will not be directly used as clinical devices unless the specific applications are carefully tested and certified. As there is a growing trend towards microfluidic devices for biomedical research, an active microfluidic device was developed. Common microfabrication methods were used to develop a microchip to separate and concentrate exosome and particular cell based on the dielectrophoresis phenomenon. Unique capabilities of the dielectrophoresis phenomenon make it a powerful tool for micro particle manipulation in micro scale. In this research, geometry for the mentioned purpose is designed and optimized. Three-dimensional...

Passive Islanding Detection for Distributed Generation Using Decision Tree Algorithm

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Madani, Sohail (Author) ; Abbaspour Tehrani Fard, Ali (Supervisor) ; Ranjbar, Ali Mohammad (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The integration of renewable energy sources introduces several issues including islanding operation. Therefore, Islanding phenomenon should be detected by a fast and reliable islanding detection method. In this thesis an intelligent-based approach is proposed to detect islanding state for Photovoltaic (PV) and Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) units. Decision tree classification algorithm is chosen as weak classifier and by Adaptive Boosting (AdaBoost), detection accuracy is improved. 16 features are employed to construct feature vectors. Because of intermittency of renewable electricity generation, different states for PV and DFIG generation are assumed. Probable events are simulated...

On Cylindrical Graph Construction and its Applications

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Madani, Meysam (Author) ; Daneshgar, Amir (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we introduce the cylindrical construction, and show that a large number of well-known graph constructions are cylindrical. Then, we prove a tensor-hom duality for this construction and its dual as factors. These fanctors, introduce a reduction from graphs to labeled ones, which is usefull to prove (non-)existance of homomorphisms. By using such reductions,we solve some homomorphism problems from generalized Grotzsch, generalized Petersen-like and Coxeter-like graphs to cycles. Then, we introduce tree cylinders and using them we introduce constructions with smaller maximum degree that do not reduce the girth and odd girth, but preserves homomorphism properties of the given...

Game theory insights for the caspian sea conflict

, Article World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2011: Bearing Knowledge for Sustainability - Proceedings of the 2011 World Environmental and Water Resources Congress, 22 May 2011 through 26 May 2011 ; May , 2011 , Pages 2815-2819 ; 9780784411735 (ISBN) Madani, K ; Gholizadeh, S ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Caspian Sea - the largest enclosed body of water on earth - is the subject of one of the world's most intractable disputes, involving five coastal states of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan. The conflict over the legal status of this multinational water body emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Since then the parties have been negotiating without reaching an agreement on the ownerships of waters, and the oil and natural gas beneath them. As long as there is no new agreement on how to share the Caspian Sea among the five states, the two old Iran-USSR treaties may continue to govern the Caspian Sea. Based on these treaties, each state's territorial...

Improving Density Estimation Using Structural Properties of Markov Random Fields

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Madani, Hatef (Author) ; Beigy, Hamid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Markov Random Fields are suitable and applicable tools for modeling dependency of data dimensions; But since time complexity of parameter learning for these models is exponential with respect to data dimension size, density estimation using these models is restricted in action. In the other hands, with growing use of neural networks in many problems a class named autoregressive networks were applied for density estimation. Although the learning time of neural network parameters is not very low, there are many efforts for parameter learning acceleration. In this thesis Markov Random Fields structural properties are used in autoregressive networks. In our proposed method the hypothesis space...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Madani Mousavi, Zeaba (Author) ; Mahlooji, Hashem (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This study was conducted at one of the leading manufactures of detergents and hygienic products in Iran. It is a common practice there to repair equipments after they have breakdown therefore there is not much preventive maintenance tasks done there in spite of contracting out maintenance and preventive maintenance plans which are distributed every month to technical departments. As today competitive pressures have increased by imported commodities and difficulty in buying new machines, companies should learn how to revive their businesses and exploit equipment efficiently to reduce the high level of capital associated with equipment malfunctions. One of the methodologies applied world wide...

Relations Between Dynamical Systems And Knot Theory

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Madani, Meysam (Author) ; Fanaii, Hamid Reza (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In fact knot theory is working by an elastic string. A knot is A smooth embedding of in . We say that two knots are equivalent if there is an ambient isotopic between them. In knot theory we study equivalent classes of knots. As it seems from its name, a dynamical system is the study of motions, mechanics and dynamics of a system. We will observe some systems and stability of orbits in theme. Then we define templates which contain orbits in themselves. At last, we observe relations between discrete dynamical systems and knot theory. Then for any arbitrary chaotic knot we observe that there exist an universal template that contain a copy of any kind of not. Finally we will study some open...

    Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to estimate the stiffness and strength of damaged rectangular reinforced concrete shear walls after an earthquake using surface crack patterns. Assessing the damage severity of buildings after an earthquake is an important part of the emergency inspection operation of buildings. Expert inspectors tag buildings into two categories of safe or unsafe that are usually affected by subjective decisions, which may result in catastrophic events reported in previous earthquakes. In this research, an extensive database on the images of damaged rectangular reinforced concrete shear walls (RCSWs) is collected and used to develop predictive equations for updated stiffness and...

    Abstract
In this article we introduce the cylindrical construction, as an edge-replacement procedure admitting twists on both ends of the hyperedges, generalizing the concepts of lifts and Pultr templates at the same time. We prove a tensor-hom duality for this construction and we show that not only a large number of well-known graph constructions are cylindrical but also the construction and its dual give rise to some new graph constructions, applications and results. To show the applicability of the main duality we introduce generalized Grötzsch, generalized Petersen-like and Coxeter-like graphs and we prove some coloring properties of these graphs

Evaluation of the simultaneous effects of sulfate reducing bacteria, soil type and moisture content on corrosion behavior of buried carbon steel API 5L X65

    , Article International Journal of Electrochemical Science ; Volume 11, Issue 5 , 2016 , Pages 3887-3907 ; 14523981 (ISSN) Madani Sani, F ; Afshar, A ; Mohammadi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    Electrochemical Science Group  2016
    Abstract
For the first time, the simultaneous effects of sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB), soil type and moisture content on corrosion behavior of a pipeline steel were investigated. Corrosion weight loss measurements were performed in abiotic control and SRB-active conditions, at three different moisture contents, and in two types of soils. Results showed that the presence of SRB in the soils, although increased the corrosion rate and aggravated pitting corrosion at low moisture contents, had a protective effect at high moisture contents. The corrosion rates showed a maximum at the saturation moisture content (SMC) of the soils. Soil physicochemical analyses showed that the corrosion rate and soil...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Madani Sani, Fzlollah (Author) ; Afshar, Abdollah (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Microbiologically influenced corrosion has substantial role in degradation of steel pipelines. It is believed that 20% of total corrosion damages are related to microbial corrosion. The most important micro-organisms which affect this type of corrosion are Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB). Although many studies have been done on the effect of SRB on corrosion of buried steel pipelines, no decisive and identical thought has been made so far. In the present study, the role of SRB on corrosion of API 5L X65 steel in different conditions was investigated by performing weight loss, linear polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction tests. Experiments were...

    Optimized compact-support interpolation kernels

    , Article IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing ; Volume 60, Issue 2 , November , 2012 , Pages 626-633 ; 1053587X (ISSN) Madani, R ; Ayremlou, A ; Amini, A ; Marvasti, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this paper, we investigate the problem of designing compact-support interpolation kernels for a given class of signals. By using calculus of variations, we simplify the optimization problem from an nonlinear infinite dimensional problem to a linear finite dimensional case, and then find the optimum compact-support function that best approximates a given filter in the least square sense (ℓ 2 norm). The benefit of compact-support interpolants is the low computational complexity in the interpolation process while the optimum compact-support interpolant guarantees the highest achievable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Our simulation results confirm the superior performance of the proposed kernel...

Climate change and hydropower in Iran's Karkheh River Basin

    , Article World Environmental and Water Resources Congress 2012: Crossing Boundaries, Proceedings of the 2012 Congress ; 2012 , Pages 3341-3349 ; 9780784412312 (ISBN) Abrishamchi, A ; Jamali, S ; Madani, K ; Hadian, S ; Sharif University of Technology

    Abstract
The Karkheh River Basin is one of the Iranian river basins with a high potential for hydropower production. While Iran is actively constructing large dams in the Basin for hydropower production, climate change is putting the future status of hydropower production in the Basin in question. Using MODSIM, sensitivity of the Basin to climate change is investigated by estimating stream flow changes and the resulting impacts on hydropower production for different climate change scenarios. Results indicate considerable reductions in annual and seasonal hydropower production due to the expected dry climatic conditions under the existing operation rules. Findings highlight the necessity for revision...

    Abstract
Despite the great potential of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in various areas of biomedicine, concerns regarding their carcinogenicity, inefficient dispersion in aqueous solutions and biological activity in vivo still remain. One important and feasible route to overcome these barriers is modification of CNTs with polymers, which are widely studied and play a vital role in biological and biomedical fields, especially in drug delivery. This comprehensive review focuses on the achievements of our and other groups in currently used methods to functionalize the surface of CNTs with polymers to produce anticancer drug delivery systems. We have intensively studied covalent and noncovalent interactions...

    Abstract
Matsufuji and Imamura (see IEEE Trans. on Info. Theory, vol.46, no.4, p.1691-95, 2000) proposed a new method to generate an optimal set of bent sequences as a set of signature sequences for a CDMA system has been introduced. This method is designed to make the CDMA system secure against interception, for both an insider intruder (a user) and an outsider intruder. The security analysis of this system of Matsufuji et al. was based on computing the cardinality of the search space. In this paper after reforming the bent function decomposition, we reapply the above analysis to the system. Then for binary sequences, we consider another analysis to this system, which is based on the fact that all...

    Abstract
The final goal in a perforation operation is achieving the maximum production and reducing perforation damage, using optimal completion process. The Dynamic Underbalanced Perforation (DUP) as one of the more recent completion technologies minimizes or even eliminates the perforation crushed zone by optimizing the well's dynamic underbalance. Dynamic underbalance is a transient underbalance process that occurs immediately after creation of the perforation tunnels. The modeling of this process is essential in designing the optimal configuration of the perforation charges to evaluate the perforation efficiency. In this study we propose a novel and efficient numerical method, to optimize the...
