Multitarget Tracking with Improved Particle Filter Eliminating Data Association Step

, Ph.D. Dissertation Sharif University of Technology Raees Danaee, Meysam (Author) ; Behnia, Fereidoon (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In general, multi-target tracking consists of estimation of the posterior density function of present targets at each scan in the observation area. These targets may have unknown and time varying number of targets. It is a tough job due to misdetections, false alarms, data association ambiguity, and nonlinear equations-non Gaussian noises. These all make it difficult to apply Kalman filter and its extensions such as extended Kalman filter and unscented Kalman filter. Monte Carlo methods, particularly particle filters, have recently aroused the interest of designers and enjoyed a lot of success to deal with multi-target tracking difficulties. In addition, they can handle nonthresholded data...

The Course of Martin Heidegger’s Notion of Science in His Early Thought,Based on Works Preceding Being and Time

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Heshmati, Ata (Author) ; Sefidkhosh, Meysam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this research, first of all, the main question of Heidegger and his epoch is investigated. If we read Heidegger along the tradition of German philosophy, then it is perceived that the problem of science is the most central subject matter standing against Heidegger. My question is this: how Heidegger reaches to this existential phenomenological view about science. Regarding that, by giving a coherent narration about a crucial problem called 'the crisis of science', in the first chapter I gave a short view to philosophies preceding Heidegger, some important of which is Dilthey's philosophy of life, phenomenology of Husserl, and south-west school of neo-Kantianism. The second chapter...

Modified Gibbs sampler procedure for bearing-only multitarget tracking

    , Article International Review on Modelling and Simulations ; Volume 5, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 1532-1540 ; 19749821 (ISSN) Danaee, M. R ; Behnia, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
While Probabilistic MHT (PMHT) highly reduces computational burden by avoiding enumeration of all possible data association events, its implementation still suffers from intractable manifold integrals. MCMC particle filters, rendering the task of PMHT implementation, found it difficult to face with both data association uncertainty and violations of the presumptions of no more than one measurement could be assigned to a target at each time step. Coping with these difficulties, we suggest a modified Gibbs sampling approach that utilizes current measurement information efficiently to estimate PMHT parameters recursively. We use scenarios of Bearing-Only multi-target tracking to compare our...

Improved least squares approaches for differential received signal strength-based localization with unknown transmit power

    , Article Wireless Personal Communications ; Volume 110, Issue 3 , 2020 , Pages 1373-1401 Danaee, M. R ; Behnia, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    Springer  2020
    Abstract
In this paper we consider the problem of improving unknown node localization by using differential received signal strength (DRSS). Many existing localization approaches, especially those using the least squares methods, either ignore nonlinear constraint among model parameters or utilize them inefficiently. In this paper, we develop four DRSS-based localization methods by utilizing different combinations of covariance and weight matrices. Each method constructs a two-stage procedure. During the first stage, an initial coarse position estimate is obtained. The second stage results the refined localization by accounting for nonlinear dependency among estimator variables. The proper choice...

Auxiliary unscented particle cardinalized probability hypothesis density

    , Article 2013 21st Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering, ICEE 2013, Mashhad ; 2013 ; 9781467356343 (ISBN) Danaee, M. R ; Behnia, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
The probability hypothesis density (PHD) filter has been recently introduced by Mahler as a relief for the intractable computation of the optimal Bayesian multi-target filtering. It propagates the posterior intensity of the random finite set (RFS) of targets in time. Despite serving as a powerful decluttering algorithm, PHD filter still has the problem of large variance of the estimated expected number of targets. The cardinalized PHD (CPHD) filter overcomes this problem through jointly propagating the posterior intensity and the posterior cardinality distribution. Unfortunately, the particle filter implementation of the CPHD filter suffers from lack of an efficient method for boosting its...

Enhanced strategy to sample newborn targets within nonthresholded measurements

    , Article 2013 21st Iranian Conference on Electrical Engineering ; May , 2013 , Page(s): 1 - 5 ; 9781467356343 (ISBN) Danaee, M. R ; Behnia, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Recently, Random finite set theory has attracted researchers' interest in the field of multitarget tracking time varying number of targets. Its main drawback is it is not essentially formulated for nonthresholded measurements. This paper examines the problem of multitarget tracking with time varying number of targets dealing with raw and nonthresholded measurements. Recursive equations for updating the joint multi target state posterior density are approximated by a new enhanced particle filter that includes effective strategies to tackle the challenges of effective track initialization and deletion with limited resources, as well as doing the data association step implicitly. Simulations...

Extension of particle filters for time-varying target presence through split and raw measurements

    , Article IET Radar, Sonar and Navigation ; Volume 7, Issue 5 , 2013 , Pages 517-526 ; 17518784 (ISSN) Danaee, M. R ; Behnia, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2013
    Abstract
Target tracking through particle filter (PF) for time-varying presence of a target is compared for thresholded and nonthresholded measurements, where in both cases a track produces more than one measurement. To that end, thresholded split measurements PF along with non-thresholded measurements, sequential importance resampling PF (SIR PF) and auxiliary variable PF (AV PF) are extended to cope with time-varying target presence. Simulations show superiorities in working through non-thresholded measurements. Furthermore, they surprisingly demonstrate that non-thresholded measurements SIR PF leads to less root-mean-square position estimation error than non-thresholded measurements AV PF in case...

Explaining Moral Role of Artifacts With Regards to Value Laden Theory of Technology

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseinpour, Hesam (Author) ; Sefidkhosh, Meysam (Supervisor) ; Taghavi, Mostafa (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this thesis we review different approaches to the theory of value laden technology and realize that there are at least two major ideas about this. Some philosophers believe that technology is not a mere instrument and has a value laden nature. In contrast some others count technology as something neutral which contains no social or moral value. After explaining this ideas, in the second chapter we examine different models which explain the relation between technology and moral and social values and show how this values can contribute in design and use of technologies. In chapter three we talk about different methods used to steer technology in a desirable way which is in accordance with...

Classification of Partial Hyperbolic Diffeomorphisms on 3-manifolds

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Tahuri Turki, Ata (Author) ; Safdari, Mohammad (Supervisor) ; Nassiri, Meysam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
In this dissertation, we will study partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms. First, we are going to introduce partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms and construct some examples. One of the important questions in the study of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms is their classification problem, which provides a deeper understanding of manifolds and also of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms themselves. We will go through this problem by examining Hammerlindl, Potrie’s [1]’s work. They have proved that a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism on a 3-manifold with a virtually solvable fundamental group, that has no periodic torus tangent to contraction-center or expansion-center, is dynamically...

Kinetic studies of glucose electrocatalytic oxidation on GC/Ni electrode

    , Article International Journal of Chemical Kinetics ; Volume 44, Issue 11 , 2012 , Pages 712-721 ; 05388066 (ISSN) Danaee, I ; Jafarian, M ; Forouzandeh, F ; Gobal, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Nickel-modified glassy carbon electrode (GC/Ni) prepared by galvanostatic deposition was used for the electrocatalytic oxidation of glucose in alkaline solutions where different electrochemical methods were employed. In cyclic voltammetry studies, in the presence of glucose an increase in the peak current of the oxidation of nickel hydroxide is followed by a decrease in the corresponding cathodic current. This suggests that the oxidation of glucose is being catalyzed through mediated electron transfer across the nickel hydroxide layer comprising nickel ions of various valence states. Under the chronoamperometric regime, the reaction followed a Cottrellian behavior and the diffusion...

Electrodeposition of aluminum from molten AlCl3-NaCl-KCl mixture

    , Article Journal of Applied Electrochemistry ; Volume 36, Issue 10 , 2006 , Pages 1169-1173 ; 0021891X (ISSN) Jafarian, M ; Mahjani, M.G ; Gobal, F ; Danaee, I ; Sharif University of Technology
    2006
    Abstract
Electrochemical deposition of aluminum from basic and acidic molten NaCl-KCl-AlCl3 mixture on a graphite electrode at 140 °C was studied by voltammetry, chronopotentiometry and constant current deposition. The deposition of aluminum was found to proceed via a nucleation/growth mechanism in basic melt, while it was found to be diffusion controlled in acidic melt. The diffusion coefficient calculated for Al2Cl- 7 ions in acidic melt by voltammetry was in agreement with the deductions of voltammetry. The morphology of the aluminum deposits was examined using a metallographic microscope and by SEM. It was shown that, depending on the current density (c.d.) and AlCl3 concentration (acidic or...

    Strictly Toral Dynamics

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Talebi, Amin Sadat (Author) ; Esfahanizadeh, Mostafa (Supervisor) ; Nassiri, Meysam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
This dissertation deals with nonwandering (e.g. area-preserving) homeomorphisms of the torus which are homotopic to the identity and strictly toral, in the sense that they exhibit dynamical properties that are not present in homeomorphisms of the annulus or the plane. This includes all homeomorphisms which have a rotation set with nonempty interior. There are two types of points: inessential and essential. It is known that the set of inessential points Ine(f ) is a disjoint union of periodic topological disks ("elliptic islands"), while the set of essential points Ess(f ) is an essential continuum, with typically rich dynamics ("the chaotic region"). One of the key results in this context is...

Impedance spectroscopy study of aluminum electrocrystallization from basic molten salt (AlCl3-NaCl-KCl)

    , Article Electrochimica Acta ; Volume 52, Issue 17 , 2007 , Pages 5437-5443 ; 00134686 (ISSN) Jafarian, M ; Gobal, F ; Danaee, I ; Mahjani, M. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
Aluminum electrocrystallization is studied by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A model based on random birth and deterministic growth of monolayers is proposed, in which the edges are assumed to follow a propagation law. The high frequency impedance data show charge transfer reaction of AlCl4- reduction while the low frequency features signifies the growth mode of deposits. The inductive response observed in the course of polycrystalline deposition reflects the activation of electrode area while a capacitive loop appears in regular growth. Parameters of impedance model in this system can be calculated from the fitting of experimental data to the Faradaic impedance...

Effect of potential on the early stage of nucleation and growth during aluminum electrocrystallization from molten salt (AlCl3-NaCl-KCl)

    Abstract
Electrodeposition of aluminum onto graphite from a molten electrolyte containing AlCl3-NaCl-KCl was studied by the method of chronoamperometery. In the early stage of the deposition and at low cathodic potentials two-dimensional (2D) nucleation and growth proceeding through instantaneous and a multitude of progressive steps followed the initial double layer charging. The processes are manifested as peaks on a decaying chronoamperogram. Non-linear fitting methods were applied to obtain the kinetic parameters in the light of Bewick, Fleischmann and Thirsk (BFT) theory. Under more cathodic potentials, transition from 2D to three-dimensional (3D) processes have been observed as manifested in the...

    , Article Journal of New Materials for Electrochemical Systems ; Volume 15, Issue 4 , 2012 , Pages 255-263 ; 14802422 (ISSN) Danaee, I ; Jafarian, M ; Shahnazi Sangachin, A. A ; Gobal, F ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
Electrodes made of group VIII and IB metals were examined for their redox process and electrocatalytic activities towards the oxidation of ethylene glycol in alkaline solutions. The method of cyclic voltammetery (CV) and Open circuit potentials measurement (OCP) was employed. It is found that considerable electrooxidation current are observed for silver and copper but lower anodic overpotential for oxidation is obtained for gold and platinum. Oxide layer produced on the surface of all electrodes in alkaline solution under anodic scan participates in ethylene glycol electrooxidation. Oxidation current observed in the reverse scans for platinum and gold are higher than those observed in...

AC impedance and cyclic voltammetry studies on PbS semiconducting film prepared by electrodeposition

    , Article Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry ; Volume 661, Issue 1 , 2011 , Pages 265-269 ; 15726657 (ISSN) Aghassi, A ; Jafarian, M ; Danaee, I ; Gobal, F ; Mahjani, M. G ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
Semiconducting lead sulfide film was deposited on Stainless Steel (SS) electrode by cyclic voltammetry (CV) at room temperature. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry were used to investigate the electrochemical properties of PbS film in Na2SO4 solution. The voltammetric results showed that oxidative dissolution of PbS film occurred at about 0.21 V vs. Ag/AgCl and total film detachment from the surface occurs with increasing potential. It is concluded that the electrode surface was not passivated by sulfur produced from oxidative dissolution of PbS film. Also, cathodic reduction of the film continued to beyond the hydrogen evolution at -1.35 V vs. Ag/AgCl....

    Abstract
Nickel modified NiOOH electrodes were used for the electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol in alkaline solutions. The electro-oxidation of ethanol in a 1 mol/L NaOH solution at different concentrations of ethanol was studied by ac impedance spectroscopy. Electrooxidation of ethanol on Ni shows negative resistance on impedance plots. The impedance shows different patterns at different applied anodic potential. The influence of the electrode potential on impedance was studied and a quantitative explanation for the impedance of ethanol oxidation was given by means of a proposed mathematical model. At potentials higher than 0.52 V(vs. Ag/AgCl), a pseudoinductive behavior was observed, but at those...
