    , Article Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry ; Volume 588, Issue 2 , 2006 , Pages 267-284 ; 15726657 (ISSN) Saedi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier  2006
    Abstract
A novel method is used to link a 2D kinetic Monte Carlo code to a 1D finite difference code to construct a more realistic and efficient tool for simulating various electrochemical processes. This multiscale model is able to simulate the long-scale mass transfer of electroactive species in bath along with electrode surface phenomena at atomic scale simultaneously. An embedded atom method (EAM) has been used to evaluate the barrier energies of diffusion and redox reactions on electrode surface. The FD code provides the ion concentration on OHP for KMC code, while the KMC code provides the surface activity and rate constants of redox reactions as an input data for FD code. The electrochemical...

    Abstract
A multiscale FD-KMC model has been developed to simulate the cyclic voltammetry test of a copper electrode in simple copper sulfate bath. In this coupled model, the FD code provides the cupric ion concentration on OHP for KMC code, while the KMC code provides the electrochemical properties of the copper electrode (surface activity and rate constants of redox reactions) as an input data for FD code. The changes in the electrode properties due to the atomistic phenomena (deposition dissolution and surface diffusion) have been studied for the present potentiodynamic system. The results showed that the CV process consists of some distinct stages, so that the electrode exhibits a specific...

Pricing Behavior Indicators and the Factors Affecting It: Evidence from Refah Stores’ Price Micro Data

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saedi, Masoumeh (Author) ; Madanizadeh, Ali (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Price stickiness which is measured by indicators like frequency and duration of price changes affects how monetary policy plays a role in economy. In fact, price stickiness determines how monetary policy affects economy’s real variables like output and unemployment. Hence, price stickiness is in favor of monetary policy since it provides the ability to improve real variables in the short term. Discovering the factors affecting price adjustment also allows the monetary policymaker to be able to predict changes in pricing behavior to some extent by monitoring the changes of these influential factors. This study seeks to answer several questions using 84 million monthly price observations of...

Electrodeposition of Ni-Fe-Co alloy nanowire in modified AAO template

    , Article Materials Chemistry and Physics ; Volume 91, Issue 2-3 , 2005 , Pages 417-423 ; 02540584 (ISSN) Saedi, A ; Ghorbani, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2005
    Abstract
Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) was used as a template to prepare highly ordered Ni-Fe-Co alloy nanowire arrays. This membrane was fabricated with two-step anodizing method. It is found that there is an optimum barrier thickness to obtain a successful electrodeposition in pores of AAO. The thickness of barrier layer can be modified by additional electrochemical process after completing the anodizing step. Barrier layer thinning can create a rooted structure at the bottom side of the AAO pores and the electrodeposited nanowire arrays. The triple Ni-Fe-Co alloy was deposited in AAO membrane by ac voltage in a simple sulfate bath. The composition of nanowires shows anomalous deposition features...

    Abstract
The actuation mechanism of the tip of an endoscopic instrument is a major problem in designing miniature scale motorized instruments, especially when a high level of functionality and multi degrees of freedom (DOF) are concerned. We evaluated the different possible actuation methods for an endoscopic needle holder and proposed a new design of hybrid local-actuation, including a micro DC motor and a piezoelectric (PZT) actuator. The DC motor provided the long movement course required for opening-closing function of the gripper while the PZT guaranteed the high gripping force required for holding the needle. A compact serial configuration was considered for the actuators, producing an overall...

    Abstract
Gravity drainage is known to be one of the most effective methods for oil recovery in fractured reservoirs. In this study, both free fall and controlled gravity drainage processes were studied using a transparent fractured experimental model, followed by modelling using commercial CFD software. The governing equations were employed based on the Darcy and mass conservation laws and partial pressure formulation. Comprehensive examination was done on variables such as fluid saturation, velocity, and pressure distribution in the matrix and fracture, as well as fluid front level and production rate. Additionally, effects of the model parameters on the gravity drainage performance were...

    Abstract
Many important public buildings have suffered significant damages due to terrorist attacks in the last few decades. This paper investigates the behavior of structures with steel plate shear wall lateral load resisting system under various blast loadings. A number of twenty steel frames with different heights and widths subjected to four different blast scenarios are modeled and analyzed in opensees software. The results showed that structures with steel plate shear wall systems subjected to blast loading have better behavior in high-rise structures than in low-rise structures in terms of drift and ductility ratio. The steel plate shear wall system exhibited shear-dominated,...

Estimation of Water/Oil Two-Phase Flow Functions in Porous Media using Meta-Heuristic Algorithms

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saedi, Farhad (Author) ; Fatemi, Mobeen (Supervisor) ; Taghikhani, Vahid (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Oil and gas production from oil reservoirs is significantly affected by rock and fluid properties. Relative permeability and capillary pressure are two key flow functions that are used in the numerical modeling of processes related to the porous environment of oil and gas reservoirs at the core scale and above. The use of incorrect relative permeability and capillary pressure curves can lead to inappropriate prediction of the future behavior of the reservoir, which in turn affects future management decisions. Due to the time-consuming nature of obtaining flow functions from the steady state method, history-matching techniques are generally used to estimate these functions as accurately as...

On the growth sequence of highly ordered nanoporous anodic aluminium oxide

    , Article Materials and Design ; Volume 27, Issue 10 , 2006 , Pages 983-988 ; 02613069 (ISSN) Ghorbani, M ; Nasirpouri, F ; Iraji zad, A ; Saedi, A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Elsevier Ltd  2006
    Abstract
Anodic aluminium oxide films were fabricated by well known two-step anodizing process in oxalic acid electrolyte. The ordering characteristics (ordered pore domains, average pore diameter size and through-pore arrangement) of anodic aluminium oxide films, obtained in different growth sequences, were identified by microscopic analysis such as ex situ contact-mode atomic force microcopy and scanning electron microscopy. Flattened areas in which some pits are seen mostly cover the electropolished surface of aluminium. Single anodizing of aluminium produces a broad distribution of nanopore size, whereas induces a highly ordered hemispherical pattern, which plays the ordered nucleation sites for...

Modeling of Gravity Drainage in Fractured Porous Media using CFD based Software and Verification by Experimental Results

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saedi, Benyamin (Author) ; Ayatollahi, Shahabodden (Supervisor) ; Masihi, Mohsen (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
Gravity drainage is known as the main mechanism for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in naturally fractured reservoirs. In fact, this mechanism is active in gas invaded zone. In spite of numerous researches in the area, the literature suffers from the lack of a comprehensive model for controlled gravity drainage. Calculating the accurate oil recovery and ultimate recovery factor is inevitable for a successful field development plan as well as enhancing oil recovery. To obtain the accurate values of the aforementioned parameters, an accurate model to solve nonlinear differential equations is necessary. To this end, COMSOL, the well known commercial CFD software, has been used for the modeling of...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Saedi, Soheil (Author) ; Farahmand, Farzam (Supervisor) ; Kazemzadeh Hannani, Siamak (Supervisor)
    Abstract
The actuation mechanism of the tip of the laparoscopic instrument is the main problem in designing the process of miniature scale motorized instruments especially when high level of functionality and multi degrees of freedom (DOF) are concerned. Previous studies suggest local actuation as the best design for this kind of end effectors. In the present study, different actuation methods of needle holders were reviewed, related capabilities and drawbacks were evaluated and a hybrid local actuated design was appointed. The hybrid design included a micro DC motor and a PZT actuator. The main idea behind it was to combine the advantages of DC motors and piezoelectric (PZT) actuators in providing...

    Abstract
Over the last years, terrorist attacks and accidental explosions have brought on a need for research in the field of structural engineering to study the response of a building subjected to blast loading conditions. An explosion within or surrounding a building, not only can have disastrous effects causing both structural damage or failure, but may also lead to the death of human beings. In order to prevent these catastrophes and gain a better understanding of responses of the buildings and lateral resisting systems with different characteristics, the study of the behavior of the lateral resisting systems under blast loading conditions is essential. This research will also aid in the...

Turbulent flow in converging nozzles, part one: Boundary layer solution

    , Article Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (English Edition) ; Volume 32, Issue 5 , 2011 , Pages 645-662 ; 02534827 (ISSN) Maddahian, R ; Farhanieh, B ; Firoozabadi, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2011
    Abstract
The boundary layer integral method is used to investigate the development of the turbulent swirling flow at the entrance region of a conical nozzle. The governing equations in the spherical coordinate system are simplified with the boundary layer assumptions and integrated through the boundary layer. The resulting sets of differential equations are then solved by the fourth-order Adams predictor-corrector method. The free vortex and uniform velocity profiles are applied for the tangential and axial velocities at the inlet region, respectively. Due to the lack of experimental data for swirling flows in converging nozzles, the developed model is validated against the numerical simulations. The...

Numerical investigation of steady density currents flowing down an incline using v2̄ - F turbulence model

    , Article Journal of Fluids Engineering, Transactions of the ASME ; Volume 129, Issue 9 , 2007 , Pages 1172-1178 ; 00982202 (ISSN) Khakzad, N ; Firoozabadi, B ; Farhanieh, B ; Sharif University of Technology
    2007
    Abstract
The governing equations of two-dimensional steady density currents are solved numerically using a finite volume method. The v2̄-f turbulence model, based on standard k - s model, is used for the turbulence closure. In this method, all Reynolds stress equations are replaced with both a transport equation for v2̄ and an elliptic relaxation equation for f, a parameter closely related to the pressure strain redistribution term. The Simple-C procedure is used for pressure-velocity coupling. In addition, Boussinesq's approximation is used to obtain the momentum equation. The computed height of the progressive density current is compared to the measured data in the literature, resulting in good...

    Abstract
The deposition behavior of fine sediment is an important phenomenon, and yet unclear to engineers concerned about reservoir sedimentation. An elliptic relaxation turbulence model (v2̄ - f model) has been used to simulate the motion of turbid density currents laden whit fine solid particles. During the last few years, the v2̄ - f turbulence model has become increasingly popular due to its ability to account for near-wall damping without use of damping functions. In addition, it has been proved that the v2̄ - f model to be superior to other RANS methods in many fluid flows where complex flow features are present. Due to low Reynolds number turbulence of turbidity current,(its critical Reynolds...

    Abstract
In this paper, creeping motion of a viscoelastic drop falling through a Newtonian fluid is investigated experimentally and analytically. A polymeric solution of 0.08 % xanthan gum in 80:20 glycerol/water and silicon oil is implemented as the viscoelastic drop and the bulk viscous fluids, respectively. The shape and motion of falling drops are visualized using a high speed camera. The perturbation technique is employed for both interior and exterior flows, and Deborah and capillary numbers are considered as perturbation parameters up to second order. The product of Deborah and capillary numbers is also used as a perturbation parameter to apply the boundary condition on the deformation on the...

    Abstract
In this paper, we consider the problem of minimizing the uplink delays of users in a 5G cellular network. Such cellular network is based on a Cloud Radio Access Network (CRAN) architecture with limited fronthaul capacity, where our goal is to minimize delays of all users through an optimal resource allocation. Earlier works minimize average delay of each user assuming same transmit power for all users. Combining Pareto optimization and Markov Decision Process (MDP), we show that every desired balance in the trade-off among infinite-horizon average-reward delays, is achievable by minimizing a properly weighted sum delays. In addition, we solve the problem in two realistic scenarios;...
