    Abstract
Cr and Cr-Al2O3 coatings were electrodeposited from Cr(III) bath with both pulsating and direct current onto copper substrates. Pulsating current resulted in homogeneous films of higher Al2O3 content and lower particle agglomeration than the direct current. Differences were more tangible at shorter duty cycles and pulse frequencies. Pulsating current improved both microhardness and corrosion resistance. The presence of alumina nanoparticles resulted in greater current efficiency, higher film microhardness and better corrosion resistance. Maximum current efficiency, highest microhardness and densest electrodeposited coatings were achieved at current density of 20 A dm-2, duty cycle of 40% and...

    Abstract
A two-step pack cementation technique was used to cover nickel-based IN-738LC superalloy with a Cr-aluminide coating layer. The IN-738LC/Cr-aluminide samples were oxidized at 900 °C for 350 and 700 h, isothermally, and 175 and 350 h, cyclically. Each cycle lasted for 25 h. Effects of the isothermal and the cyclic oxidation on (a) morphology, (b) new-phase formation, (c) weight gain, and (d) oxidation reactions were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, electron dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and weight gain measurements. From results, it was concluded that the oxygen attack was more severe during the cyclic oxidation than the isothermal procedure. Kinetics of the...

    Abstract
The effect of NaOH content of electrolyte on the properties of ceramic coatings, produced in silicate solution, was studied. Morphology, chemical analysis, phase composition, and cross-section of the ceramic coatings were investigated by SEM, EDS, XRD, and OM, respectively. The corrosion resistance and corrosion mechanism were also studied using potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a 3.5% NaCl solution. To study the surface roughness, a brightness SEM image analysis method was used. Results suggested that increasing the NaOH concentration of sediment production size causes thickness and coating roughness to decrease. The lowest corrosion rate belonged to...

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salehi Doolabi, Mohsen (Author) ; Sadrnezhad, Khatiboleslam (Supervisor)
    Abstract
Electroplating is an appropriate method for co-deposition of metallic, non-metallic and polymeric fine particles onto a metal matrix for production of functional coatings. In this study, chromium and Cr–Al2O3 composite coatings are electrodeposited from trivalent chromium bath by using DC and square pulse current. Dependence of the amount of Al2O3 nano-particles trapped into the coatings on the Al2O3 bath concentration, average current density, particle size, agitation rate and type of the current is investigated. These parameters are optimized for the highest co-deposition amount of the Al2O3 onto chromium layer. Optimum values are 20g/l Al2O3, 200 rpm stirring rate and 25A/dm2 current...

Experimental Investigation of Mechanism of Wettability Alteration Induced By Hot Water and Steam Injection

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salehi, Afshin (Author) ; Masihi, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
One of the most important production mechanisms of fractured reservoirs is wettability alteration. Since most fractured reservoirs are carbonate, and thus are often oil-wet; production of these reservoirs is facing their special challenges. Since most of our country reservoirs are fractured carbonate type, determination of the exact mechanisms of their production is necessary. Thermal EOR methods traditionally have been welcomed by big oil companies. Also, these methods of enhanced oil recovery techniques, have a much greater share in the production history of all EOR methods, rather than other EOR methods. Exponentially decreasing of oil viscosity on heating, is the main reason for using...

    Abstract
Hot corrosion is a serious problem in gas turbines due to poor quality fuels which contain Na, V, S and Cl. To resolve the problem, Cr-aluminide was coated on IN-738LC superalloy with a two steps pack cementation process. Oxidation behavior and near-surface microstructure of the coating showed consecutive increase in destruction by exposition to Na2SO4, 75Na2SO4 + 25 V2O5 and 70Na2SO4 + 25 V2O5 + 5NaCl (wt.%). Kinetic studies indicated parabolic corrosion rate in salt-less samples due to diffusion. Similar expression for salt-covered samples was assessed for oxide dissolution. Plate-like, broken-plate-like and cauliflower-like morphologies attributed to the corrosion products were observed...

    Abstract
Thermal-sprayed MCrAlY coatings have become widespread in various industries such as power plants, aeronautics, and oil and gas firms. High-temperature oxidation behavior of these coatings is therefore of significance. Spraying of two prevalent MCrAlY powders (NiCoCrAlY and CoNiCrAlY) on Hastelloy substrate by high velocity oxygen and fuel method and exposing them to 1000 °C air for resolving of their cyclic oxidation behavior are presented in this paper. The coatings were characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. The obtained oxidation kinetic indicated that at 1000 °C, the thermally sprayed NiCoCrAlY coating has greater...

    Risk Sensitive Intertemporal CAPM

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Salehi, Najmeh (Author) ; Alishahi, Kasra (Supervisor) ; Bahramgiri, Mohsen (Co-Advisor)
    Abstract
This thesis presents an application of risk sensitive control theory in financial decision making. A variation of Merton’s continuous-time intertemporal capital asset pricing model is devolved where the infinite horizon objective is to maximize the portfolio’s risk adjusted growth rate. The resulting model is tractable and thus provides economic insight about optimal trading strategies as well as the fact that the strategy of 100% cash is not necessarily the least risky one. For fixed income applications we utilize the concept of rolling-horizon bonds, which are stochastic process models of certain mutual fund of zero coupon bonds. We show that the optimal proportion of one’s wealth to hold...

    Abstract
In this paper we study and evaluate the performance of a spectral-phase encoded optical CDMA (SPE-OCDMA) system using advanced receiver structures based on second harmonic generation (SHG) effect imposed in a Thick or Thin crystal. This receiver structure is employed as the nonlinear pre-processor prior to the conventional low-speed photodetector. In our performance evaluation amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) of the optical amplifiers, receiver front end thermal noise and photodetector shot noise which are effective in low power conditions, and multiple access interference (MAI) noise which is the dominant source of noise in high power conditions in any coherent OCDMA communications...

Phase-induced intensity noise in digital incoherent all-optical tapped-delay line systems [electronic resource]

    , Article Lightwave Technology, Journal of ; 2006, Volume.24 , Issue. 8, p.3059-3072 Mansouri Rad, M. M. (Mohammad Mehdi) ; Salehi, J. A ; Sharif University of Technology
    Abstract
In this paper, the authors analyze conditions under which they can be certain on the intensity addition of a given device, such as tapped-delay lines, used in digital incoherent all-optical communication systems. A general expression for phase-induced intensity noise that is applicable to all types of semiconductor lasers is derived by defining an optical self-SNR expression that can be used to analyze and measure phase-induced intensity noise. The result shows that in order to have a minimal phase-induced intensity noise in most digital optical incoherent systems, a large optical self-SNR, e.g., 20 dB or more, is needed. This in turn is shown to place a limit on the maximum rate of...

Investigation of the Effect of Asphaltene on the Stability of Water-oil Emulsion

, M.Sc. Thesis Sharif University of Technology Hosseini, Amir (Author) ; Taghikhani, Vahid (Supervisor) ; Baghban Salehi, Mahsa (Supervisor) ; Masihi, Mohsen (Supervisor)
    Abstract
During the production of crude oil from reservoirs, the production of quantities of formation water along with this oil, causes the crude oil does not have the necessary indicators for transportation, refining and ultimately export. The presence of water and salt along with crude oil causes corrosion of refinery and transmission equipment and makes oil unfavorable in terms of economic efficiency (both for domestic use and for export). water and salt produce stable emulsion with oil that can be stable for a long time and can not be easily separated from crude oil. Therefore, separation of water and salt from crude oil is one of the most important issues in the oil industry. Breaking this...

Adaptive output feedback tracking controller for a class of uncertain strict feedback nonlinear systems in the absence of state measurements

    , Article International Journal of Systems Science ; Volume 43, Issue 2 , 2012 , Pages 201-210 ; 00207721 (ISSN) Salehi, S ; Shahrokhi, M ; Sharif University of Technology
    2012
    Abstract
In this article, design of an adaptive control scheme for a class of uncertain single-input single-output systems in strict feedback form via a backstepping technique has been proposed. It is assumed that system output and its derivatives are available. By virtue of the observability concept, it is shown that for this class of systems there exists a one-to-one map, which maps output and its derivatives to system states. By means of this mapping and using linearly parametrised approximators, such as fuzzy logic systems or neural networks, the uncertain nonlinear dynamics and unavailable states are estimated. The proposed adaptive controller guarantees that the closed-loop system is uniformly...

    Abstract
In this paper, an adaptive fuzzy controller, based on backstepping technique, has been proposed for temperature control of a general class of continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTRs). Using the observability concept, an adaptive fuzzy controller using temperature measurement has been designed. A fuzzy logic system is used to estimate the concentration dependent terms and other unknown system parameters appearing in the control law. It is shown that the closed loop system is asymptotically stable and influences of minimum approximation error and external disturbance on the L2 norm of the output tracking error can be attenuated arbitrarily. The performance of the proposed controller has been...
